I was wandering around in the mall the other day, and walked into the resident Gamestop there. After looking around for a little bit, I heard something familiar coming from the demo station. The titlescreen movie loop to Final Fantasy XII was playing on the PS2 station. So I walked over and got a closer look.

Sure enough, it seems that the station had replaced the PS2 with a Japanese system with the JP copy of FFXII playing. So I picked up the controller and started the game. I skipped past all the intro cutscenes since I wanted to save them for when I got the game, but started up in the tutorial/intro sequence. Everything seemed pretty straightforward, as characters introduced you to walking around, moving the camera, interacting with the world, and basic fighting.

In any case... I played around for something like 15 minutes, before a rather tall figure was standing next to me.

"Hey man, how's it going?"

Not recognizing that he was an employee, or knowing who it was really, I responded "Pretty good."

"Yeah, um, I'm going to have to cut you off... It seems we left the controller attached. We were just going to have the title movie looping for people to see. Can't have anyone playing it, since it isn't out yet."

Busted. So, cooperatingly, I put down the controller and let him take care of setting it back up again. Though we did have a nice conversation about the game. He was skeptical about it, since he was reading about people in Japan that pretty much used the Gambit system to program the party to completely automate itself against any encounter in the game. Sounds somewhat bogus to me, since other folks have also said that the boss fights are pretty challenging and keep you on your toes even with heavy Gambiting.

Anyways, random story from my weekend. Carry on
Cool. So I guess it played out somewhat similarly to the US demo then? I've got a feeling (after also reading some sources) that you can basically just set your gambit AI to whatever you want and get your guy to walk around the battle field. When they encounter, the AI takes over and you can go get some pizza to eat . Of course putting something on auto-pilot isn't always going to yield the greatest results, especially since the game is for you to play.

I don't really see why they had to not let others play it. I mean it would be a perfect opportunity to get more of an experience from it besides the US demo, and let the audience get a better feeling of the game - besides importing the JAP version. I guess they just want to keep a lid on things...

I've heard anywhere from 50 hours just for the bare bones no side quests game play up to 120-130 hours if you do the whole nine yards. Of course, I mind as well get my gaming time worth and do it all. I rarely revisit beaten RPGs.

Game + 50% Bonus = 100h. Game it self 70-80h.

I hope that's a lot of storyline and not redundant repetitive fighting. I start to lose interest at the 20 hour mark. I know people like to get their money's worth, but I usually just want to play through the story, and end up with a good ending. Anything over 100 hours is absurd.

Yeah I too despise redundant fighting or power-leveling. But, if it's over a 100 hrs. of nicely balanced mix of interesting gameplay with a long but great story, then it's fine.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I like how every rpg fan compain about rpg that are way too short and when there's finally one that is long enough, they blame it to be too long ...

The longer the better for me in this case. I don't think I've ever thought any RPG I've played was too long. Usually it's the opposite case. The more gameplay the merrier I'll be, again reiterating that for the foreseeable future, I only plan on going through this once. However, my decision may change a few days after playing this title.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I pre-ordered the collectors edition of FFXII last week, too bad I won't have a PS2 by the time the game comes out since my ps2 stopped playing games so I had it sent to the warranty place. So I got a gift card to circuit city to buy another ps2, which I won't use until the PS3 comes out and use it towards that. So I'll be placing the game in my showcase for a while until I can get the PS3, this sucks...

I know this sounds pretty shady, but is there a way you could just "buy" it for 20 some days, play the hell out of FFXII so at least you don't get left out, and return it to a store with good return policies? I mean, it seems like a hassle just for a single game, but personally I'd be pretty upset if my PS2 crapped out on me, despite a replacement PS2 being relatively cheap(er) these days at $130 CDN.

I enjoyed long RPGs when I was young, and I had the time to appreciate them. Now, more often than not, I see long RPGs for what they are, filler content that rarely enriches the core content of the game. I am more than happy to play through the basic story of FFXII without hunting down every bonus monster. I will enjoy it every bit as much too.

How ya doing, buddy?

I don't think I've ever complained about an RPG being too short... considering 20 hours max would have been fine by me. I'd even take a good 10 hour RPG if they made them. Only reason I like RPGs in the first place is the story, if they can get a good story in about 10 hours, then great. Most of the time though, it's a good story but a bunch of leveling or hunting down monsters in super long dungeons that kind of get on my nerves after awhile.

I think I finished at 90 hours when playing through jap no walkthroughs and no sidequests. The game is not short, but not long in my opionion. Obviously with the sideuests its longer.

Holy shit. 200 friggin hours. Good thing because I was afraid that I'd get too far in the game with my 3 days off.

I don't know but now that I see an higher resolution of that cover I really like it (I thought there was just clouds around the character but the airship is a pretty good idea)

only thing I doN,t like, there's no logo, so the Final Fantasy XII fell like...naked XD

anyway I still go for the CE (already pre-order it) but I wouldn't have mind the normal version ^^

I'm hearing that you basically get the regular cover that's inside of the CE tin can's cover, so it's almost the best of both worlds, me thinks.

Personally I'm wondering why Vaan's crotch is glowing.

In all seriousness, I think it's pretty solid. I love how the airships are there radiating out from the group of main character renders. Color composition is nice too.

Ditto. The first thing I thought of when I saw the larger pic of the cover was "uh...ok. So the focal point of the pic is Vaan's crotch radiating with some sort of holy rays. "

I'm not blown away, but it could have been much worse I suppose. Whatever, can't wait for the game itself!

Yahoo!

Quote:
Widescreen TV owners can be partially happy to know that the game now has true 16:9 support. While it's not 480p (much less HD), it at least alleviates the no-win choice between using stretch modes or window-boxed display. And the additional screen real estate opens up the view nicely. Switching between standard and 16:9 views felt like removing blinders, and the 3D engine showed no signs of trouble from the slightly broader field of view.

That cover reminds me of Goldfinger and his shiny "key" in Austin Powers. SOLID GOLD! Still, the cover still looks lacking without the Judge FFXII logo.

Yep, and lack of progressive scan is unimportant, since the PS3 will undoubtedly give the game a boost no matter what.

It isn't all wine and roses, though. 1up says the shakespherean acting is overplayed. Full impressions henceforth.

I wouldn't worry, as the dub sounded quite excellent in the trailer.
