I'm no expert about it, but I think there are either two or three universes that all the series are based on, or alternate timelines of a series.

Cosmic, Universal and After Colony I think.

I've only watched Gundam Wing, Seed and Seed Destiny, but Wing and Seed are self contained series you could watch without ever having watched any before. It doesn't really matter where you start from as long as its from the beginning of a series. If you can get ahold of the dubbed version of Seed I would suggest that, the dub is excellent and the characters are a lot more likable than the ones in Wing.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

While not complete, this is an intro to the wide world of Gundam. You will definitely want to check out some of the online guides and whatnot for the rest.

The original Mobile Suit Gundam series was set in the Universal Century (UC) calendar. The numbering more or less coincided with the actual calendar (First Gundam aired in like '78 or '79 and was set in UC 0079). Most Gundam series are set in the UC universe. This includes:

Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit ZZ (Double Zeta) Gundam
Char's Counterattack
V Gundam
F91 movie
08th MS team
MSG 0080: War in the Pocket
MSG 0083: Stardust Memory
etc

There are quite a few that I've left out, including other series/manga/novels/etc. At any rate, the first 4 on my list there were done by the creator of Gundam (Yoshiyuki Tomino) while many of the other UC works were done by other people. They have varying levels of quality (in writing, animation, whatever). Point is that most Gundam series/works are set in the UC universe. Gundam accounts for a serious chunk of Bandai's revenue/profits, and they'll be milking this puppy for a long time. Because of the long association with UC, Bandai is also trying to bring new fans into the UC universe (see new Zeta movies).

If you want to get into UC Gundam, start with the first series (Mobile Suit Gundam) and watch Zeta Gundam and Char's Counterattack. These will give you the "big" picture in terms of what's going on. Some of the other series/OVAs/movies (like 0083) are pretty good and other's (like ZZ) are not. Your mileage will vary. But these series will also give you the basic grounding for any Gundam series.

Around the mid '90s, 3 new Gundam series came out that were set in alternate universes. These were a mix of homages to the original series and bizarre new things. They all assumed a minimal amount of familiarity with the Gundam universe and can be watched independently.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam (FC universe "Future Century"?)
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (AC universe "After Colony")
Mobile Suit Gundam X (AW universe "After War")

Gundam Wing is more or less a re-telling of the original series. G Gundam is a "fighting" anime done with gundams, and Gundam X is more of a "what-if" version of the original series.

Tomino himself came back and did another Gundam series: Turn A Gundam. Though technically an alternate universe, it's hinted strongly that it was a way of tying all the previous series together. Turn A is set in the CC (correct century) universe set far in the future. This series can also be watched independently of the others.

Finally, we come to Gundam Seed. Seed is yet another alternate universe (CE, or Cosmic Era universe). It is basically the original series done over again with Bishounen characters and lots more gundams than the original series (which had 1). To be fair, a few new twists were added, but the basic plot flow is very similar to the original series. Seed can be watched independently of the others.

Gundam Seed Destiny is obviously a sequel to Seed. You will probably want to watch Seed before Destiny, though with all the flashbacks in Destiny (a theme common to the Fukuda, it seems), you might not be missing much. A sequel movie has been announced for the Seed universe.

And of course, Bandai will continuing putting out new stuff in the UC universe, like the MS IGLOO series.

That's a "brief" intro. There are definitely sites with as much (probably too much) information on Gundam as you could possibly want. I suggest starting with Wikipedia. Though there are some fanboy Wikipedia pages with false/misleading info, these are relatively few and getting fewer.

Thanks a bunch Hazelguy and Antibob ^_^, those are really informative. Despite the fact that everybody is so hyped about Seed Destiny, I guess I'll be watching the earlier series first. I love to put together Gundam models, I wanna know what I'm putting. Again guys, appreciate it.

I don't know if everybody is "hyped" about Destiny. It was really a disappointing series. Actually, it was flat-out bad unless you are some obsessed Seed fanboy.

Everybody is a little anxious, though, about the OVA (Stargazer) that's coming out over the next couple months. Definitely watch Seed first or the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

CE.73 Stargazer PROMO!!!

Go check out the promo:

Bandai Channel

As was previously mentioned, this side story takes place soon after the "Break the World" incident in SEED Destiny. A few scenes with Sven and just one with Selene. Otherwise it's mostly Strike Noir doing it's thing.

Gunota had mentioned before the new theme song and I guess that was what was playing in the promo. The title is.....

Well, whenever there's a new Gundam SEED story it seems to be complimented with another Astray side story. Not sure if this is the case with Stargazer or if it's just a follow up on Destiny Astray (but even Stargazer is almost directly related to Destiny), but we now have a new Astray story in our midst:

Delta Astray

The official website is already open with a few mecha, character and story details on the manga. Lowe's Red Frame is shown so he's definitely back again this time round. I'm not sure how big a part he will play though since I hear he was relegated to the supporting cast for Destiny Astray.

The site: http://www.delta-astray.net/

The new unit is awfully similar to the V-Gundam though.......

I was thinking it looked more like teknoman since I never saw V gundam.
Does anyone know the release date for the stargazer song? I can't find it listed in yesasia.com
I hope it's not being released last quarter of this year.

Well, well. Gundam SEED: C.E.73 Stargazer Phase I has been subbed and released by Mendoi (the group formerly known as Hiro Fansubs, who did an awesome job on SEED Destiny).

Get it here: Mendoi-Fansubs: Gundam SEED C.E.73 Stargazer episode 1

Also, the official website has updated their mecha section to include a picture and description of the GSX-401FW Stargazer:

CE73 Stargazer - Mechanics page

Courtesy of Gunota Headlines:
Quote:
GSX-401FW Stargazer
"The GSX-401FW Stargazer is a mobile suit developed independently by DSSD. Holding a neutral status with regards to both the Earth Alliance & PLANT, DSSD created the unit as a non-combat mobile suit with the objective of exploring space beyond Mars. It's most notable features are the interplanetary propulsion system known as the Voiture Lumiere and its ability to be used largely unmanned thanks to its high degree of autonomy. The machine itself as well as its operation support system are collectively designated as 'Guider UNmanned Deployment Autonomic Manipulation'. The abbreviation for this is 'GUNDAM'."
Downloading the episode now, hopefully it'll be an entertaining watch.

My hard drive failed so I won't be able to download it for a while.

I just checked out the site and they updated the Mechanics page. Is that silver one Stargazer? Looks like it doesn't have much armaments... Just very shiney... shiney is cool...

News from the G-Festival, apparently they had some new footage to show from the SEED Destiny Special Edition volume 4 (last volume).

From Gunota:
Spoiler:
Quote:
UPDATED - According to those who attended the festival, the footage shown for the last Special Edition "Cost of Freedom" was an edited version of last part of Final Plus showing Kira in white ZAFT uniform, Athrun in White ORB uniform and Shinn in the red ZAFT uniform as Lacus enters the PLANT Council.

At least one major uniform change there.....

Also, the second part of CE73 Stargazer was released a while ago:

[Mendoi]_Gundam_SEED_CE73_Stargazer_-_STAGE_II

EDIT: Just watched the episode, a little surreal during one of the battles - for some reason it was awfully reminiscent of Evangelion....
Spoiler:
.....Phantom Pain go out and defeat the ZAFT attack at one of their bases. They get another order to wipe out a coordinator refugee camp because it was believed they were really a front for terrorists, Sven gives the order without even blinking an eye.

A brief glimpse into Sven's past was shown also. As a child he wanted to be an astronomer and was fascinated with the history of man's exploration into space. During an space exhibition, there was an explosion and his family were killed. Orphaned, he was signed over and delivered to the EA's Extended project where he was trained to hate and kill all coordinators.

Meanwhile, Selene and her crew have started the Stargazer and have been testing it's systems and the new Voltaire Lumiere propulsion unit.

Back on Earth, Blu Duel is crippled and it's pilot, Mudie, killed while battling a pack of Bacues (fucking reminiscent of those white eva ripping into Asuka's Eva unit....yuck). Sven destroys the whole lot but is unmoved by her death. On board the craft they were protecting, Sven runs into some Extended soldiers walking besides a gurney stretcher. On the stretcher is Stella, probably just after being returned by Shinn and before she sets off in the Destroy Gundam to raze Berlin in Destiny. Later, Sven hears that his group (now only him and Verde Buster's pilot) have been ordered into space to target and destroy the DSSD operation.

Whoa.....

I just downloaded HobbyJapan October06 catalog.
Just started looking through it and they show a MG of a new strike.
I've seen wallpapers of it but it's not in the show, SEED. Maybe it's in the SEED movie, I don't know. It's the Strike with like a new Ailes backpack. It has cannons on the shoulder like Freedom and a sword on each hip and the shield has a gatling attached to it.
There's also a 1:100 Savior from SEED Destiny. Yay, I like savior so I'll be saving some money for that.
There's other things besides gundam but I don't really look at that..

Yeah, that's the IWSP (Integrated Weapons Striker Pack). It doesn't appear in either SEED or SEED Destiny, though you did see it attached to Strike Rouge in one of the earlier Destiny OPs. It's strictly an MSV (Mobile Suit Variations) item though, along with Destiny Impulse, Zaku Splendour and Providence Zaku, along with many others.

It's armnaments include 2 machineguns, 2 cannons, 2 anit-ship swords, and a combined shield/gatling gun with a beam boomerang. It can be attached to either Strike or Strike Rouge.

It's an MG 1/100 kit (includes Strike) and it's due out in October.

The 1/100 scale Saviour is not an MG kit unfortunately, otherwise I'd definitely be getting it. However, the kit designs and drawings in Hobby Japan make it look really sleek and sexy so I haven't completely made up my mind yet. The kit is also released in October so I'll have to watch out for that too....

Goddamn impulse buys got to me again........this kit was sold out a while back when I was thinking of getting it despite not having the space to display it if I ever built it. It was kind'a hinted that the kit wouldn't be returning to stores, but suddenly there it was and I went and bought it without thinking of the consequences.

Oh well.......

MBF-02 Strike Rouge 1/60 scale PERFECT GRADE
(includes Aile Striker pack and Skygrasper) HK$1'080.00

Oh, and more MG news courtesy of Gunota Headlines:

Quote:
MG Strike Freedom UPDATED
MG Strike Freedom is set to come out in December. It will be priced at 4800 yen.

Bandai will be releasing 2 version for the first batch. The Special Option Ver. will contain an original booklet, special option, and the MG kit. It will be priced at 7000 yen.
Apparently there's a picture too but I can't view it the moment. I'll try and link it here once it becomes available.

Nice box, its even got silver handles!! I don't think I'll ever buy a PG. I'll stick with a MG.

MG Strike Freedom? O RLY??? NO WAI!!!
I haven't checked gunota in a while, thanks for the update.
The 1/60 Lightning edition has MG details so I thought it was a replacement for the MG. If I'm satisfied on how the pictures look I'll get it along with 1/100 Savior.

Heh heh, actually the handle's black plastic. I guess it does look like it's a silver color thanks to the flash!!

Shit, seriously Bandai is really milking the fucking money out my ass!! I already have an MG Strike, Strike Rouge and Freedom sitting around my room. I have a 1/60 Strike Freedom (Lightning Edition) and now I have the PG Strike Rouge. Now they're coming out with an MG Strike Freedom and I will be getting it, nevermind that I don't have any space for it!! Man, their marketing really brings in the big bucks!

Well, I guess I should be glad they're making top-quality stuff, which seems to get better and better with each new release. I can't wait for this December.....

Well, Justice was a kind of red color, the Extended MSiA version I have is a kind of maroon with a hint of pink. It doesn't really bother me at all. Infinite Justice is pretty obviously pink though, even in the show. I guess it's because since Lacus was the one who had it built, she prefered a more pink color? Pink is probably Lacus' favorite.

When I see the Saviour in those pictures, I get mixed feelings.

Good: Very stylish MS, red is always cool.
Bad: Athrun only used it to shot here, fly there, pretty much avoid Sting and the Chaos all the time (when he had more than enough skill to take him out) and then finally getting destroyed by the Freedom.

Confused Athrun = sucky Athrun.

To be fair the way that he got taken out was fucking awesome. All that was left was the core and the rest of it just sort of trailed away.
