Nice save...

Apparently no one here is into The Mars Volta. I made a thread about the new album but it sank like a lead balloon.

Yes well, Mars Volta isn't metal.

I went to Gigantour. That was pretty awesome. I missed out on Overkill though. I guess they actually had everyone going on on time. It started at 5pm and typically, it takes them awhile to start up the show. Oh well.

Arch Enemy gave a good performance, they performed songs from Wages of Sin on up. Opeth was fantastic as always. Mikael Adkerfeldt was playing along with the audience, poking fun at themselves saying they were 'Pussy Swedes" and that they played "Cock rock, death metal, black metal, and cock rock". Great stuff.

Lamb of God was next and I really enjoyed their set. They played a lot of songs from Palaces Burns to their new one. Only Black Label, I believe, was played from their earlier albums.

Megadeth was fucking fantastic. Minimal talking, and just straight up thrash all the way through. They even played a brand new song which was quite decent and certainly had a thrashier feel to it. Dave Mustaine's birthday also happened there. We all sang happy birthday to him, and the crew brought out a cake. After he blew out the candles, he took the cake and tossed it into the audience. I wish I was in that area.

I have to agree with guyinrubbersuit, Mars Volta isn't metal. That's like saying Van Der Graaf Generator or King Crimson is metal. It's progressive rock music, but not prog metal.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I really beg to differ. The Mars Volta refuse to be pinned down, but there is an undeniable metal influence. KC and Van Der Graaf weren't anything close to metal.

They're really not metal. :/ There's an influence there, sure, but they belong in the same kind of category as Spock's Beard or Coheed & Cambria.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Haha, this thread was dying and I sparked some activity. You want me to go away?

Fine, lump it all into "progressive rock". The term doesn't actually define much, but whatever. Compare them to bands they're nothing like. Classify, oversimplify, everything is black and white. So narrow-minded.

I don't care what you call them, I brought them up here. If you don't like them just say so. No need for pretense.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Actually, I rather like the Mars Volta, but they're still not metal, and as such shouldn't be discussed here.

Anyhow, lately I've been listening to a lot of eighties metal. Anyone here heard Thor's Only The Strong? It's quickly becoming one of my favorites of the era.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

I like them as well, however when I listen to them, I cannot hear any metal influence in them. They might be influenced by metal to some degree, however they certainly don't play it.

Listening to it now kekekekekekeke ~

Reaaaally nice so far. Just like their usual style with, I'd say, even better musicianship.

Anyone heard Coldseed? It's a Blind Guardian/Soilwork crossover, and it's pretty modern-sounding... They released a CD this year, but all I could find was a single song It rocks damn hard, though.

Týr is fucking boring. I don't understand the hype on that band... they're the dullest "viking metal" I've heard.

New Månegarm is excellent. Beautiful folk music.

I'd say that so far, the best 2006 folk/viking releases are Rubicon, Tales Along This Road and Urminnes Hävd. <3

Tyr does sound kinda dull at times, but the new album has little bits of extra they've inserted in their songs, which is kinda cool. Urminnes Hävd is awesome, and I just discovered Battlelore. Liking them so far. Reminds me of Thyrfing but with additional female vocals.

Whoah you mean you don't own it or never even heard it ?! And yeah, like a lot of Russian bands it's really hard to buy their releases. Try emailing them?

Anyway, just in case and for Vemp' sake anyway:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ewnu1b

Oh, and while the new Korpiklaani is fun, they still don't do much to me. I always feel like I'm kinda listening to some weird ska/metal when I listen to them. =/

Holy shit, I can't even wrap my mind around what that would sound like.

Also to whoever suggested the new Mercenary album, muchas gracias. I only ended up liking one song off of their previous album, but this one shows a big shift towards traditional power metal, and I'm liking it a lot.

Into Eternity's new album has leaked. It's...hmm...it's not quite Buried in Oblivion, and it's not quite Dead or Dreaming...I haven't had a chance to do in-depth listening yet, but I like it in a general sense. "Surrounded By Night" was one song I could immediately latch on to, though. A lot of their first and second CDs in that one.
