I could recite stuff from a long list of things I didn't like about the game, but the thing that killed the game for me was the awful, predictable plot and the way the characters developed ("OH GOD THERE IS THIS EVIL FIGURE THAT LOOKS LIKE MARIO EXCEPT IT IS MADE OUT OF DARK WATER! IT IS CALLED SHADOW MARIO AND WE CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIM AND REGULAR MARIO." *fast forward* "OH NO IT TURNS OUT EVIL SHADOW MARIO IS ACTUALLY THE SON OF BOWSER! AND HE'S GOT A MAGIC PAINTBRUSH THINGY THAT ISN'T EVER EXPLAINED AT ALL.") These would be things that would remain in Mario games for years to come. Peach's disgusting ponytail and extremely ditzy voice... Bowser Jr.'s portrayal as Bowser's only son (what the hell happened to the koopalings?)... and BOWSER'S VOICE, DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN. I wanted to saw my Gamecube in half when I heard him for the first time. Why couldn't they have picked a cool-sounding voice actor for him instead of this hackish retard? It would have been awesome of them to get the kickass voice actor for Koopa in the SMB cartoon. After thinking that's what he sounded like for years, he finally speaks in a canonical game and he sounds like this crappy 30 year old man with a rice mill stuck in his throat and too much air in his cheeks. And the worst part is that we're now stuck with this shit as it first appeared in SMS, having to put up with Peach's ugly hairdo and ditzy giggles on top of having to listen to Bowser's lame voice actor spew completely underwhelming, forced roars in every single subsequent Mario game following SMS. I honestly miss the cool monster roar that was his voice before this bullshit. I miss Peach's attractive, long flowing hair...

There's nowhere I can't reach.

.....

Post of the year?

If you're seriously angry about the story in a Mario game, then it's even funnier.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I'm not really that angry about the story, it's the trends that it created in the Mario series that rattle my windows.

Have you even played New Super Mario Bros.

Grubdog is right, post of the year. From my resolution it looks like a perfect rectangle of text.

Justing making my opinion more clear: although SMS was (as a Nintendo game) faulted, unpolished and at times, uninspiring and "by-the-numbers", it still managed to be fun. All the complaints about falling and stuff is just how much patience a gamer has. Luckily, I consider myself very patient and had no trouble enjoying the game.

The main points of criticism are aimed directly at the lack of "Nintendo polish" that was consistent throughout the 64 years. Yeah, the 64 didn't sell well but owners had ammo against the Playstation fanboys with Nintendo's AAA titles. There virtually wasn't a single game from Nintendo's first or second parties that weren't programmed thoroughly.

SMS buckled this trend. Suddenly the Mario franchise slided down the path of which the likes of Spyro and Crash went down in. Mario Kart DD divided gamers. Mario Tennis wasn't AAA, just A. Games with Mario in it were not on the same standard on that of the 64.

But to get back to the point, SMS didn't have the polish nor technical brilliance Mario 64 had. Sure Mario 64 had its own bugs and stuff, but considering the limitations of the 64, it was down right impressive. The GCN was way more powerful, but SMS didn't really utilise the power well.

Pretty water effects? Sure. But did they spend all their resources into there?

On the contrary, SMS was fun and if I were to judge the game by that criteria, I'd consider it a worthy sequel to M64. Plus, the "warm, fuzzy feeling get!" was evident too. It just didn't have that Nintendo magic.

Wow. I didn't experience with "bad" camera movement Also I enjoy the game as much as SM64. I played the game 2 years ago and beat it. Then I play it again 2-3 months ago and I still enjoy it.

I don't own the game... I borrow it from my cousin but I think I was playing the game in progressive mode and it looks great.

I agree with Malmer, Grub, those guys. I loved this game. I think the controls are the most intuitive controls for that level of complexity that I've ever come across. The camera, I'd say 90% of the time, felt fine. But then I love camera control in games, and I'm constantly toying with it while playing.

Parts of the game do bother me. Red coins were never a favorite of mine, even in Mario 64. I hated blue coins even more, I hated that the most. They shouldn't have rushed the release (so glad they've delayed TP, that's also the only qualm I had with Wind Waker, was the two dungeon cut).
The end boss could have been so much cooler if the enemy really just was an Shadow Mario, painting enemies with the brush and who knows what else, could've been awesome.
Some recycled goals (chasing Shadow Mario, mainly) were also a minor qualm, but not so much.

Other than that, loved it. FLUDD was incredible, I just liked turning on the game and playing it. I'd run around the main plaza for literally an hour, jumping around, doing whatever. It was just tons of fun to play, flat out. I never put so much pointless downtime into a game (as in, not doing anything quest or goal oriented).

I liked the atmosphere. I really like the beach anyway (I'm there now, for a month and a half), and Nintendo captured the sense of vacation excellently. Never got old to me.
The Hotel level was my least favorite, but I even liked that.

Overall the game was great. I consider it more fun than Mario 64, it merely suffers the unfortunate flaw of not enough work being put into it. I have no doubts that SMG will change that.
I finished NSMB recently. I consider Sunshine superior to that game, I enjoyed it more. The game was fun, but I preferred Sunshine by a small margin. NSMB just felt too old.

Overall, lots of fun. Flawed, yes, but still an excellent game, and one I consider to be on par with many other Mario games, IF ONLY for the ridiculously advanced and complex platforming I could do in it.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Okay, fine, Bowser is free of that in this one game. 1 out of 10. He's still like that in MKDS.

Sunshine was a good game, but a few annoying missions and level designs stopped it from being great. The best parts were definitely the warp zones.

Am I the only one that found the music (sans Boss Battle and Warp Zone) to give me a headache?

My beef with Sunshine has less to do with gameplay (though I noticed a slight deterioration) and more to do with the ending and bonuses.
The ending was terrible to sit through and really quite mind boggling.
Spoiler:
Peach is Bowser Jr.'s mother - wha?

However, it was made exponentially worse by only adding a different frame at the end after jumping through some serious hoops for shines and blue coins. I fully completed the game, expecting some neat mini-games, an alternate ending, or some kind of bonus. I was very displeased by my supposed "reward".

Made me hate the game forever, despite it being very fun and entertaining until the treasure hunting portion arrived.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

yes, though i wasn't fond of the boss music either. what i've heard of galaxy's boss music has sounded much better (at least it doesn't sound like fucking polka for 3 year olds).

God, the Warp Zone music was so great. I wish someone could provide me with a MP3 of it...

Right, SMS. I thought it was a good Mario game. Not the best (The best Mario game is still Super Mario Land for Gameboy. I love this game<3) but good. FLUDD was a stroke of genius. I loved farting around that village in the beginning (Delphino of whatever its called) and spraying water all about.

I dunno about feeling angry and all about the plot. Sure, it was a bit of they couldn't distinguish between Mario and Shadow Mario, but this is fucking Mario... Not Casablanca. A magic paintbrush? Wasn't it too a creation of E. Gadd? The bloke who created FLUDD and Luigi's Ghost Sucker *giggles*? What more do they need to explain? If Mario ever needed some plot coherence, they had to explain why Peach's such a stupid broad she get caught by Bowser all the time. Why not get Mario to stay at the castle? Those toad guards are useless...

I was speaking idiomatically.

I don't think it's a bad game. But I don't think it's a very good game, either. The storyline annoys me not because it's dumb but because it's not needed and just gets in the way. You can't skip that bloody court scene that takes like seven hundred years and was made by a work experience kid on his lunch break.

"SEEMS TO ME LIKE MAAHRIIIO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR POUNDING THE TOWNSFOLK INTO THE GROUND THEN COVERING THEM WITH POO AND PLANTING GIANT PLANTS"

"But I just got here"

"SHUT UP I'M A DAMN TALKING PALM TREE, I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY. OFF TO JAIL WITH YOU FATTY"

The best parts were when you were free of FLUDD's snobby terror in the awesome bonus levels. The rest was pretty forgettable for me, and I'll probably never replay the game.

Just . . . so not cool! Coercion in Mario? Give it a rest! I also believe the plot was completely unnecessary.

Sunshine was the first and only Nintendo game that I ever lost interest in. I think I was mabe two levels in, and it just did not evoke that since of fun and adventure that I always get when playing a Mario or Zelda game. As result I handed it over to my friend who managed to play through the entire game, but still said it sucked.

Though I've never beaten the game, i've truly enjoyed every moment of it. The music was great, so was the level design and I liked the whole water-is-king thing because it was pretty fun and new. There is one thing that annoyed me and that was the camera but it only went bad in climbing levels.

Well, I have. And the boss related areas can be such a pain. Even in Bowser's lair. But, it was hilarious when you got to squirt the citizens and see their reactions .
