Seriously people, where are you finding all the great music? Somebody besides me and Uzuki has to be running out. IT'S WEEK 55 AND ALMOST EVERY TRACK WAS DECENT!
(2 points) Metal Gear>>Solid Snake: Music Compilation of Hideo Kojima / Red Disc - Sneaking Mission: I don't even mind the overly done guitar solos. The heavy backbeat gives the song an intriguing gravitas. (2 points) Tales of Legendia Original Soundtrack - Tomorrow Will Surely Be Sunny: The opening 25 seconds are heavenly. The rest of the song isn't quite as pitch perfect that opening tune, but it's still quite good. (1 point) All Over Xanadu - The Resurrection of Dragon: For 1987, this is mightly impressive. Dig the rockin second half. (1 point) Battle Arena Toshinden 4 (Game Rip) - Track 21: A tad scattershot, but never gets really boring. As for the rest: Aqauarium just missed out on a point. Abandoned Mines is like an old-school version of Star Fox Adventures dungeon music. Walkingaround1 certainly has atmosphere, but it's a little too static out of game. And sorry, I have to steal someone else's idea here: Song of the Weak: The Sims 2 (PC Game Rip) - CAS: I expected more since the Sims' piano tracks were so good. This is like a poor imitation of the Animal Crossing soundtrack -- which was lacking in its own right. Too cute and lacking substance. How ya doing, buddy? |
I didn't really enjoy most of the tracks this week. For whatever reason, most seemed to feature solos, melodies, or insturmentation that sounded badly performed/composed , which really hurt their standing in the point spread.
3 Points - Lode Runner - The Legend Returns (Red Book Audio) - Abandoned Mines ~ Music When I first nominated a track from this album at the start of SoTW, this was my original choice. For whatever reason I felt ("Crystal Caverns") was the stronger offering, but have come to appreciate this track just as much. Having listened to this album quite extensively I would say this is the most well composed and engaging offering from this album. The layers of percussion and how they were structured throughout really is impressive in my opinion. And unlike a majority of other Lode Runner TLR tracks this features a decently developed melody/rhythm with roughly three separate verses before looping. Having listened to the rest, I must say this is a breath of fresh air. 2 Points - All Over Xanadu - The Resurrection of Dragon: A really impressive piece that combines several contrasting instruments (electric guitar, synth and strings) into something that ends up sounding quite wonderful. Solidly done and enjoyable to listen to, especially the string solos toward the end. 1 Point - Battle Arena Toshinden 4 (Game Rip) - Track 21 A decent synth action piece with an enjoyable melody that is engaging the whole way through. A bit inconstant but easily better than the rest in terms of overall quality. Runner Up: Metal Gear - Solid Snake Music Compilation of Hideo Kojima - Red Disc - Sneaking Mission This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |

K..... it's been a while since I contributed to SOTW. Here's my next nomination:
Title: ROTTERDAM NATION 94 Album: Ridge Racer 2, Namco Game Sound Express Vol. 14 Composer: Shinji Hosoe Cat #: VICL-15031 Track #: 10 Release Date : September 21st 1994 Source: http://chudahs-corner.com/soundtrack...log=VICL-15031 This is one of my favorite Hosoe tracks, hyperactive and a staple track of the series as it appeared in RR1, RR2 and RR PSP. Now to see if people will be able to withstand its particular "energy" :P I was speaking idiomatically. |
Thought the SotW crowd would find this amusing. Another Road Avenger intro appreciation thread on another forum.

(3 points) All Over Xanadu - The Resurrection of Dragon
This nomination was meant to give you all a taste from one of the first arranged vgm albums ever released. As chuck mentioned, it was from 1987 which is why it has such a retro feel. I believe it was the first arranged album released by Falcom so you might say it helped to kick start their craze of arranged soundtracks to follow. The intro gives you the impression you're in for some kind of intense boss theme but it catches you off-guard by the switch over to a more upbeat tune with a great melody containing rock and orchestral elements. It's not overly complex but who needs that when you've got such a great tune? (2 points) Battle Arena Toshinden 4 (Game Rip) - Track 21 Good synth melody with a nice piano solo in the middle. I liked the variety in the last minute which kept things from being too repetitive. (1 point) Raystorm Neu Tanz Mix - Aquarium A relaxing tune with a soothing melody which gets repeated over and over with minor variations through each iteration. The chanting was a bit of an odd addition but I thought the other sound effects were appropriate. I've got the video rip (from slightlydark) of Zuntata performing this track live during their 1997 concert so if anyone is interested, I can upload it though I must say their performance of this track was quite under whelming...they just stood there nonchalantly playing their instruments with blank looks on their faces. The rest... Lode Runner - The Legend Returns (Red Book Audio) - Abandoned Mines ~ Music Nice rhythm with the layers of percussion but the melody is just average and doesn't have much variety in it. Still an enjoyable track to chill out to. Metal Gear - Solid Snake Music Compilation of Hideo Kojima - Red Disc - Sneaking Mission It took a while for this one to get going and when it did, it was a bit of a mess with the seemingly random guitar solos. I usually enjoy guitar solos but not when they're as erratic as they are in this track. The melody is almost non-existent and the electronic synth in the background is too overbearing. Despite all it's flaws, it's still listenable. Tales of Legendia Original Soundtrack - Tomorrow Will Surely Be Sunny The melody in this track is ok but it gets repeated way too many times with little variation. I did like the clarinet passages though. The Sims 2 (PC Game Rip) - CAS Sounds like this is a combination of the major themes from the game rolled into one track. All parts were easy to listen to and would fit well into a game like The Sims but I just couldn't get over the "background music" feel these tunes evoked. The tunes are decent enough to warrant playing but unremarkable enough to actually pay a whole lot of attention to which makes this track perfect for when you want to do something else like folding laundry. Agatha Christie - And Then There Were None (Game Rip) - walkingaround01 The instant this track started up, I know it wasn't going to get much love from me or most others. I've read the novel this game was based on and I can picture a track like this playing while wandering about the mansion but it's not something I want to hear popping up in my playlist. FELIPE NO |

Uuuh, I really thought that Toshinden 4 was going to do great things this week. When you listen to it in the future you will regret to not have given it more points!

I'll be voting sometime before midnight tonight. I have my 3 choices, but don't have an order yet, so please don't close yet. I'm not sure anymore when the thread's "officially" supposed to close, i.e. Saturday midnight EST or sometime Sunday mid-afternoon. Lemme know for the future.

I'll be voting shortly.
1st: The Sims 2 - CAS - 3 pts. 2nd: Xanadu - The Resurrection of Dragon - 2 pts. 3rd: Toshinden - Track 21 - 1pt. Very short write-ups this week. The losers: Aquarium was very boring; I kept waiting for something to happen. Sneaking Mission struck me as uninspired and not very enjoyable. Abandoned Mines was interesting, but was too repetitive, especially for being more of an ambient track. walkingaround01 was decent, but too short/undeveloped. Tomorrow Will Surely Be Sunny just didn't do anything for me. The winners: I love CAS. It's just a very fun song (or group of short songs, if you will). It has an unusual style. It's interesting and unique, but not at the sake of sacrificing quality. Resurrection of Dragon is pretty cool. Definitely a step above the other songs. Track 21 wasn't going to get a point initially, but after listening to it again, I think it's a neat song. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Nothing really against the music this week; some of it was reasonably catchy, but I still felt like nothing stood out much. Didn't keep anything this go around. Really hated that Metal Gear track.
3 points: Tales of Legendia Original Soundtrack - Tomorrow Will Surely Be Sunny 2 points: All Over Xanadu - The Resurrection of Dragon 1 point: Lode Runner: The Legend Returns (Red Book Audio) - Abandoned Mines ~ Music What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I forgot to indicate it anywhere in the first post, but the original plan was to extend voting for a week because of Song of the Year. It doesn't seem like anyone's had problems voting either here or there, so I'll probably end up closing normally unless I get some serious objections (short notice, I know).
I haven't voted yet since I was assuming two weeks, so it'll stay open at least as long as it takes me to listen to the tracks, but yeah. Also, Dragon God has a nomination change:
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Voting. I thought none of the tracks were flawed in anyway, it just comes down to preference this week.
Agatha Christie - And Then There Were None (Game Rip) - walkingaround01 This track is like a semi-broken lamp, the one that blinks irrationally. It's a genius effect in-game, but actually it's quite annoying to the eyes as well. All Over Xanadu - The Resurrection of Dragon This one was very close to 2 points. The intro was a bit average, but the song got better and better. (1 Point) Battle Arena Toshinden 4 (Game Rip) - Track 21 Like really, this track has everything but... I didn't prefer this track somehow. Lode Runner: The Legend Returns (Red Book Audio) - Abandoned Mines ~ MusicThis track feels like the water is dripping down from the ceiling. I primarily like the percussion and the snippy melody. (1 Point) Metal Gear - Solid Snake Music Compilation of Hideo Kojima - Red Disc - Sneaking Mission This song got me totally absorbed somehow, although these kind of songs I should be very familiar with by now and the beginning could be better. Total breakout later on though. (2 Points) Raystorm Neu Tanz Mix - Aquarium Like I said, a matter of preference. The song hits all the right marks, although the melody isn't very developped. This track is like ambient upbeat or upbeat ambiance. I probably would like it a lot less if the whole percussion doesn't keep it going. Actually on 1 out of 7 days, the track feels unremarkable. (2 Points) Tales of Legendia Original Soundtrack - Tomorrow Will Surely Be SunnyI quite don't understand how they want to draw "sunny" with a violin! It felt rather dreary for me. Title aside, this one was alright, although it felt a bit repetitive towards the end. The Sims 2 (PC Game Rip) - CAS A kind of hit or miss. It's quite unique, which was welcomed, at the same time it easily lacks coherence due to the "choppy" character. But others might find something in this clip-clap-clop. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Also, my next nomination: Star City :: Dave Wise :: Diddy Kong Racing (note: there are two soundtrack CDs of this, on the US version it's track 12 of 16, on the JPN release it's track 32 of 42. As far as I know it is the same length on both) How ya doing, buddy? |
I suppose I ought to nominate something before I forget.
Artist: Steve Burke Album/Game Title: Kameo: Elements of Power Track Title: Enchanted Kingdom Disc Number: 1 (of 1) Track Number: 9 Catalog Number: SE-2021~2 Year: 2005 Source(s): My personal collection. Let me know if upload is needed. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |

Some LOOOONG tracks this time around (one of which was mine, heh). Also some of the most interesting nominations in awhile. I'm not sure if it was the best, but it was still very interesting to listen to.

Gah, I'm disappointed that Resurrection of Dragon didn't win. I mean, I would've loved it if CAS had won, but out of the top songs, Resurrection was my favorite. Aquarium was boring, and I'm kind of surprised it managed to get 1st.
Oh well. Now to decide what my next nomination will be. Probably either something from Batman (NES - Sunsoft version) or Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (PC). There's nowhere I can't reach.
