Isn't one of the big Hawaiian legends supposed to be to not take a rock from that volcano place or something? Or else Pele will curse you with bad luck?

I think I heard something like that once.

Around where I live, I can't think of any local legends, or anything remotely interesting on this subject... Maybe Hell's Half Mile Celebration or whatever it is.. Basically a road down town has an underground "Road" beneath it, and once a year a few people are allowed to go and walk along it. Nothing interesting though.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Yeah, taking lava rocks and bones/artifacts from ancient grounds (old temples, for instance) are said to bring a curse upon you, and Pele would be specifically related to the lava rocks. I can remember one story of a boy, in that Obake Files book, who found a pile of bones in the rain forest and picked up the skull, and later the hand that touched it never grew from that day on because the bones were from ancient Hawaiians, not sure if it was a chief.

We have alcoholics and perverts round here too, I don't think they quite qualify as local legends.
Do your alcoholics and perverts make the conscious decision to dress up and live like a baby for the rest of their lives? Didn't think so.

Actually that fetish isn't really all that rare. Pretty common, especially with people who wield unusual amounts of power. You should read Kulick's stuff on it. Fascinating, really.

The fetish itself is one thing, trundling it out into the public eye is another.

I suppose if either one of us is qualified to interpret the words of a man in a rubber suit, it's you.

In Newfoundland every little community always has at least one local legend; most times they're usually ghost stories. I haven't had any particular encounters with ghosts, but I do remember the one legend that was very popular in our community and it was only a community of 600 people.

Back in the old days my community was actually split into two communities. Eventually one of those communities died out, and the people had migrated to the other community. Very deep in the hills behind my house about a 2-3 km walk is a very old graveyard with three gravestones there.

As kids we were told to stay away from that graveyard because to my parents and a lot of other people that's where the devil worshippers were buried. It was a very ominous feeling I remember always looking at the graveyard as a kid from the top of the hill. They say if you went there during the night you would disappear or the fairies would take you away.

There have a lot of people especially 50 to 100 years ago that disappeared from going out to the hills but I probably know why. The hills have a lot of bogs that are incredibly deep, and also there were a few old mine shafts in the area over 100 years ago. Supposedly over a hundred years ago there use to be pirates that use to abduct people who use to go out to back of the hills to do berry picking and other things.

Despite all the ways this local legend is untrue. It still exists, I actually think me and my wife are actually going to visit that old graveyard when we go up to my community this summer. I always wanted to see what that graveyard was like.

Wow well compared to everyone elses mine are lame, but there are a couple local legends here.

There's this huge building in the middle of town that's been there since the late 1800's, and some people say if you park in a certain area and look into the 3rd floor window you can see a girl looking back out or looking out at something. Or something. Probably just the way the light shines on the window, never tried it before.

Also, there are a few druids that live in this area. They have a meeting hall and everything about half an hour away from where I live. I've given one of them a ride to his house and he seemed like a pretty nice person.

But yeah, my town's pretty lame in this department.

In a school I've been to, Jenny is a very very well-known name.

Jenny is a beggar who can be found walking and asking for money on the streets. But HE (yes Jenny is a he), doesn't look like your average beggar, nor does he act like one. Jenny could often be seen in a clean light colored shirt with the sleeves rolled up and rolled up shorts. He also always has a hip belt bag on. He has very few teeth left that his lips curls in his mouth. He has white hair, almost bald. His skin is pretty fair for somebody out in the streets all day.

So what is so special. The streets where he usually roams are mostly occupied by dormitories and schools. I've seen him help students find seats in the McDonald's nearby. I've seen him roaming the streets with a big umbrella on a rainy day to help students get from one place to another. He can also be given errands. There are some students who asks him to buy some stuff, of course these students pay him to do it. I've spoken to him a couple of times. Seems like a nice guy. Tells you to be careful on the streets. Sometimes he would be the one starting conversations.

I started getting curious when I saw him get into a bus. (Just so you know... beggars don't usually ride the buses in my country). I started asking around. Some say that he isn't really poor at all. Others go far as to say that he might be very rich. Another person I asked told me that Jenny was some rich guy gone a little loopy. Another source says that Jenny might be out there looking for something.

Not really creepy but very mysterious ^^.

I don't think we have much of anything for local legends... The only one I know of..., maybe its more of a mystery, is the secret headquarters of the Masons... I have heard some interesting stories... about people trying to find it and got caught...

I know that at the University I attended for five years had a story about the residence I lived in as well as the Alumni building being haunted. On certain nights, people have claimed to see unexplained lights and objects moving around the alumni building at night. The building is about 100 or more years old, and it used to be right outside my residence window... *shivers*, just typing about it creeps me out...

Just about every community in Newfoundland has a ghost story or legend. Two the most well known ones from home are the Ghost Ship of Hodges Cove, and the Wheel Chair lady of Spirits Hill.

Spirits hill is located between two communities and there are no street lights, and there is a cemetery there. The story goes that a old lady rolls around in her rusty wheel chair with long white hair and blood over her face, because of the darkness you can only hear the squeaking of the wheels and moaning of her voice, I haven't heard either.

The Ghost Ship of Hodges Cove is just a ship that comes into the cove every Halloween, but a few friends and I used a ouija broad in the area for fun Halloween night and saw a white long-liner come into the cove, we did not think much of it until it turned around a left. The boat looked real enough, but we grinned and said "maybe it was the ghost ship!"

Hrm I found I good legend I've never heard of before. The legend of Kapo, the goddess of fertility..sister to volcano/fire goddess Pele. It's related to this in a way:

My favorite is the one about pork..you are never supposed to carry pork of any kind in your car when you drive over the old Pali road or else your car will stop and the pork will rot. I think the legend was about how Pele lived on one side of the island, and the half man-half pig demigod lived on the other and they didn't like each other. So if you take pork over to that side of the island, you're taking a piece of the god and you will not be allowed to cross.
So basically Pele and the pig god Kamapua'a were lovers and had a turbulent relationship, had a kid, they split, he tried to rape her and Kapo sent her...flying vagina..to distract him and save Pele. Apparently she had a detachable one and it left an imprint in one of the volcanoes which is now the crater.

Vin Diesel's "XXX" had an action scene filmed in my small home town of Auburn, CA. It was the talk of the town for a few months since the producers had purchased six brand-new red corvettes and were driving them off of our local Foresthill Bridge. I don't remember the actual scene in the movie, but I think it had someone parachuting out of the car.

There's nowhere I can't reach.
