I think I could pass for being in the american military in my current state. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |

Online friendly fire? Depends, sometimes if I'm on a clan server and a large number of the people on are clannies they'll observe some trigger discipline and will show you the common courtesy of first looking into your eye to identify FOF before letting the lead fly. But otherwise most online games are overrun with trigger happy morons who will shoot anything that moves and the occasional jackass who TKs merely for fun.
Offline however I prefer FF on, there are times where its more of a hassle but I just think FF is a small detail of realism thats worth having that can really help pull you into the game. I was speaking idiomatically. |
I like it. If anything, it adds amusing situations.
Me, In CS: *Runs to the tunnel.* Me: Uh oh, here comes the enemy. Time for a frag! *throws it, only for it to bounce off the wall, taking me and MY ENTIRE TEAM OUT* Priceless. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
It all depends on the type of game. I'd prefer no FF in UT-like games, whereas it's more immersive to have it turned on in CS-like games.

And no matter how many times you apologize, they still come to TK you. Most amazing jew boots ![]() - What we all do best - |
FF is a ton of fun! I just like to shoot my friends to startle them in the rare cases that I do play an FPS. I'll say: "Oh whoops, I didn't know that you were on my team," all the while shooting at them whenever I get the chance. It's sort of a handicap for them, trying to survive from more than just enemy fire >=) I almost never attempt to shoot at the enemy since it's more fun to watch how everyone else reacts to my choice of targets.
How ya doing, buddy? |

^^ I hate it when someone plays that way online. That's one of things, in fact, that kills the experience for me - people who run around killing their teammates simply because they can. It's selfish to have fun like that at, the expense of every single other player.

I play on Battlefront 2 often, one of my favorite shooters because of the Star Wars element, anyways FF really makes/breaks a game. While you can have TKs on (for example) Hoth who will blow up your snowspeeders as you get in, overall it makes a much more challenging scenario. Instead of being able to hop in a walker, and just randomly shoot into crowds hoping you kill someone, or just taking strafing runs at high speed through mixed lines you have to accurately target and make sure you don't splash friendlies. This turns it from a "mass blaster" into something more resembling team combat and requires some communication/teamwork to suceed. Without this, you might as well play first-player where you can run amok and kill hundreds of NPCs.

Then again, counter-strike is pretty old. The system of "everybody needs to vote in order for this player to be kicked" is horribly flawed, because the offenders can just retry their way back into the server. Do you know how hard it is, to get everybody to type "vote ___" in the console? Pretty damn hard, that's for sure. I mean, it doesn't even ban the person temporarily. A kick. Then they rejoin. What's the point in that? And it's not just FPS games either. Games like Warcraft III or Starcraft can turn ugly as there's no kick option once the game has started. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
In regards to FF, i think it is very much situational and varies game to game. But, it also depends on the AI thats implimented and used in the game itself.
For Example: Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion- In this game you sometimes have to wonder into caves or close quarters with AI friends assisting yout along the way. They tend to always run ahead of you as soon as they see somthing and block your path when you try to attack or range the enemy. If you hit them (which is often the case) they could turn on your or if they are in your guild, end up getting you expelled. In this game i think there should be FF if there were competent AI, but because that is not the case it should not be allowed here, due to how often and unavoidable it is. FELIPE NO

I'm going to diverge off the subject of video games a bit but keep talking about friendly fire.
YOu know those laser tag games? Like in real like and you wear the suit and the laser gun and shoot the other guys in some crappy maze flooded in UV light? I haven't played a round of those where I haven't come off as the biggest team killer. I'm colourblind. Flouro colours are pretty much the worst and I cannot for the life of me tell the difference between the green team and the orange team. Blue and Red teams? Hell no let's choose colours that 1/30 of the male population will struggle with. Usually I have to try and tell teammates and opponents about by either their faces (memorising the apearance of strangers is beyond difficult) or whethor or not they're shooting at me. Goddamn laser tag. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Of course, worse than a Tker is a bleeder. I just remember how nice some servers were when they did a ratio of time VS HPs taken from your team by yourself. If the ratio was too high, you got the boot.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
