Yeah let's just throw every fucking character known to man in every fucking video game ever created into Brawl so it can become MUGEN.

I'm amazed that the DS still hasn't gotten a good tennis game after being on the market for what, three years. ;_;
Well you're wrong about that, there has been one there among the first games released to the DS and it's one of the most awesome tennis games I've played. The game I'm talking about is "Prince of Tennis 2005: Crystal Drive", and it was only released in Japan in the winter of 2004. It's got a very realistic feel to it and it won't really give the balls to you like I feel many tennis games do nowadays, meaning you have to be in a good position when you swing your racket, and you can't just mash buttons until you hit the ball. The system is very sensitive (you can actually get a lot of outs and faults/lets in this game if you're not careful, which I find is a very rare occurrence in most tennis games) and you really have full control over your character, a huge amount of shots is available. On top of this, the characters have the cool specials that the Prince of Tennis series is known for and it really doesn't ruin the gameplay as it's very well balanced.

If you are a big tennis game nut this game is a must have. Even though it's in Japanese you don't really need to understand Japanese to be able to play it.

Anyways, to get to the real topic, I have no hope for this new Sega tennis game. I think it looks like crap and probably will play as such.

That's pretty good to know, I've never heard of this so called prince of tennis, but I'd like to meet him one day. For brunch, if possible.

Doubtful considering tennis games are the one thing Sega's still great at, but who knows, maybe Sonic's diarrhea power can drag this down as well.

That's what I was thinking.

Well okay, I guess Sega never has made a bad Virtua Tennis game (at least all the ones I've played are good), but this is not Virtua Tennis. It just seems to be a crappy copy of the Mario Tennis games. And the characters they're gonna use, pfft, a damn monkey, that out of date blue hedgehog and a space chick (etc etc.)? Wow, they fit so well together! I wonder what more thrilling combinations we are in for!

An interesting thing is that they have two sentient monkeys in the game (Samba de Amigo guy and Monkey Ball guy), but they have different designs.

Could we work on getting characters into the game who actually look a lot different than each other instead of having two monkeys?

So, you guys are already labeling the game as "suck" without even playing it or is it just the fact that certain Sega heroes not in this game are already dead and buried? They brought Nights back so have a little hope.

HOLY SHIT ALEX KIDD IS IN IT =D

This just went from a oooooaaauuuugh purchase to a DAY ONE. I hope there's also an Alex Kidd themed stage, maybe one with blocks to smash, and one of them has death in it, and he chases you about the screen. THEN A HELICOPTER.

Oh no my Serious Bus Mess entry! Oh well I'll just repost stuff in here, but my initial keyboard mashing with erection excitement cannot be cloned!

ALEX KIDD AND GOLDEN AXE DWARF

No screens of the Space Harrier bit have surfaced yet, and apparently there's an entire army of mini-games (EIGHTY?!) that have yet to be revealed! I assume by eighty they mean.. eighty based on a select few themes.. but.. still.. eighty!

And some screens of the DS version while I'm at it. Like the 360/PS3, this one's also online. Only Wii and PS2 miss out on that.

The whole bottom screen dedicated to the score? Way to efficiently use space, Nintendo!

Sucks about online play for Wii, since you'll be able to use the Wiimote like in Wii Tennis. I guess Microsoft will be getting my money instead.

Microsoft will be getting my money as well. Online play vs. wii-mote tennis and online play is the victor. I'm actually surprised that the Wii version won't have online play, yet the DS version will.

Of course, I might wait on this one since the release date is March 18th and Brawl comes out 9 days prior to that.

So now that this is out, is anyone playing it? Early reviews weren't kind, but the sense I'm getting from normal gamers is that it's a fairly decent game.

I've only played the demo (PS3 version), but based on that this game is terrible. How can a game based on Virtua Tennis (best tennis series ever) fail at having good gameplay so much? I mean, somehow they managed to dumb it down yet make it harder at the same time, though it's probably hard only because it sucks so much.

To be more specific, I don't like how there's not that many shots to pull off (the game only uses two face buttons), the mechanics of it all seems kind of floaty, and the special moves are just cheap (that's more of just a personal complaint of mine, as I just prefer realistic tennis to this fantasy stuff). I wouldn't say it's the worse tennis game I've ever played, but they could have done a lot of things much better.

So yeah, I'd probably never get this game, since I doubt the full version is any better. Even with three different playable monkeys (monkeys~<3), this game still just isn't that appealing to me. That being said, I wouldn't mind checking out the DS version. I'd like to see how the touchscreen controls work.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

It sucks that there's a PS3 demo but not one for 360. I don't download many demos, but this is one I'd definitely try before buying.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Same here...I don't see why there isn't a demo on the Marketplace. I wasn't going to buy the game right away though since I'm still hooked on Brawl, but depending on how well it played I might've purchased it.

Does the PS3 version also have online play?

The demo said that the PS3 version does have online play.

My sister actually played through the whole demo, which was worth it for the comedy factor. Basically, every time you finished a set (well, once time ran out, since they never actually let you finish a full set), something was unlocked in the demo. First it was a minigame, then a new course, then a whole bunch of music tracks. We kept making jokes that you could probably unlock the whole game if you play long enough (obviously you couldn't, but it was just funny seeing something new come up every time a set finished).

As I said earlier, I picked the game up, and spent the better part of this morning playing online with Omagnus. No noticeable lag, which is good considering he's across the pond from me.

The game itself is pretty much what I expect it to be. A "segafied" version of Virtua Tennis. Your move set is limited to your basic four, a topsin, a slice, and with two button combos that produce a drop shot and a high lob. There's also the optional smash for high hits, and the strength of your hit depends on button sensitivity, which I like. The Superstar State is hilariously campy and hard to counter in some cases, but it can be turned off in online play.

The game itself offers up a hilarious "TV Service" (it's damn well done though) that allows you to spectate games in progress and even highlights from completed games. If you go into it expecting to find something in depth as say, Top Spin and VT as far as game play is concerned, you either do not know what game you're buying or you're just stupid.

Overall it's a blast and a half, especially with a partner. I give it a B+. Only gripe so far is that Pudding's voice is terrible. No problem though since I'm just going to stick to playing as Amy from now on. She sounds so funny when she serves, swear to god.

More or less I'm going to echo what Tails said. It's campy as all fuck, and in-love with Sega, but then if you don't expect that then what the did you think this was? I've not played many of the mini-games in the Superstars mode, but the ones I have played so far are pretty entertaining and some require a bit more precision than you might think. If you like Sega's various mascots, like a bit of bright, colourful, bouncy, silly fun, then it could be worth a look. If those things turn you off, walk away now.

So this is good? =) I'm waiting for the 360 version to drop in price a bit, because no matter how many 'it's cool okay' erections I may have for Alex Kidd, I'm not paying $100 for a sports game. >=( The PS2 version comes with a free controller here, it looks like it was made from dead camels or something.

I like how they called him Alex the Kid in the IGN review. Nobody plays games at IGN. Go back to reviewing horses arses IGN.

Yeah.

That's right.

I went there.

There's finally a demo on the 360 Marketplace today. The tennis wasn't that great (but maybe it's because I'm no good at Virtua Tennis either), but the House of the Dead minigame was hilarious. I wouldn't pay $50 for this, but if I find it on sale somewhere, I'd pick it up.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
