Well let's see. I have a PS2. I don't have a CG. Buying a whole new console just for one game seems somewhat ridiculous, no? Oh wait, I guess you're addressing the thread in general. In that case, oh okay then. >_>

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Like, blowing off a zombie's head and seeing tenticles pop out is already pretty disturbing enough, as I saw in one video preview. So tell me what are the disturbing or absolutely freaky parts of the game. You mind as well spoil it (in tags plz). Is Silent Hill "worse" in the horror department as this? Well, I never played a SH game but it's screenshots look much more..."holy fuck what is that thing?!?!!?" sorta deal.
It's funny you mention Snake/MGS since RE4 actually has a "Codec" of sorts in the game.

I can't really say there were any "disturbing" moments but just moments like...
Spoiler:
...exploring the initial village and so forth in pitch black darkness with little bits of lightning and thunder to illimunate the surroundings that may highlight an enemy can be pretty unnerving and catch you off guard for a "jump" moment.

That and those Regenerators freaked me out when you first meet one.

Silent Hill is completely different though. Team Silent put more emphasis on trying to genuinely scare the shit out of or just creep you out. If RE is all about "Survival" in the genre then Silent Hill makes up for the "Horror".

The downside to that comes from the gameplay suffers from being slow and clunky but stick with 'em for the story and atmosphere and you'll take plenty away from the experience.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Oh fuck, okay I'm not gonna play it now.

LOL I can see a thread of this in the sewers:

Would you hit a regenerator? Yes/No

Okay, feel free to post other pics that will keep me scared and wide awake tonight. No seriously. What do those nurses look like again from SH?

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Yeah well just imagine the first encounter...
Spoiler:
low lit to total darkness rooms and with a cell corridor being lit only be the moonlight streaming through the small slit windows above only to suddenly hear something shuffling towards you making this unusual sound and only getting glimpses of it as it passes through the moonlight.

....If that's not bad enough then you have to find the Regenerator's weak spot since picking off limbs or portions of it's torso just causes it to regenerate unless you hit the right weak spots.

Is the seperate ways bonus any differant than the game cube quest with ada?
and about the regernerators...

Spoiler:
I love when your trying to kill the regenerators, for the first times with out the help off the thermal scope for your sniper, you have to unload everything you've got on it and if you get it in the knees it will squirm and lunge at you until it gets close enough to start biting at your ankles viciously

Yep.

Seperate Ways is more of a "Where was Ada when this happened..." and so forth.

Not too scary as many have said.

Hell dude, I may suggest that Fatal Frame 1-4? and Silent Hill is way more scarier than RE4.

Here, you just shoot nobodies 6,000 miles from Sunday. Shooting isn't considered scary.

Seeing that regenerator is already giving me bad vibes. And that's only ONE of them. Alright, I'll probably just watch it at friends' houses or whatever, then see for myself. What makes SH more scary then? Pics please. If you can show me something more freakier than the regenerator, then RE might seem like Teletubbies. Oh wait, those damned things are pretty creepy already.

Here is an ingame image of sorts from the Japanese RE4/PS2 website. Head to the creatures section and select the one at the bottom of the list. Some well put trailers as well, see for yourself.

I had a look at them. Are those all the enemies of RE4? They don't look so bad, except for that freaky dog with the tenticles, and the dude with the huge claw like fingers, and of course our friend, the Regenerators.

There are more in the game, bosses and variations of the Ganados which are all over the game time and time again. Most of the time you'll find yourself overwhelmed by the hordes of enemies coming at you. It's a blast the first time around.

RE 4 is not scary at all. It's mindless shooting. The monsters are not scary, they're just that, monsters that you shoot at a lot. It's all action-packed.

What makes Silent Hill more scary is what you don't see.

Silent Hill messes with your head. A constant suffocating feeling permeates all that is around you. It evokes a sense of hoplessness and loneliness, and yet you know something is out there. It is extremely psychological and much more cerebral than Resident Evil.

A room that you swear is empty still makes you do a double take.

You open a door, or a case, expecting something to happen, something to jump out at you.

But nothing. Nothing at all.

Or was it.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Sweet mother of Jesus, what the fuck is that.

So SH is a lot of problem solving...find the "key" to move to the next area and kill the occassional straight-shitted-up-demon from the hellworld?

Resident Evil and Silent Hill both have their fair share of fetch the key to open this door. It's not the problem-solving that makes Silent Hill a more cerebral game.

It's the psychological oppression and mind games Silent Hill offers you. It's the incessant industrial pounding punctuated by the soundtrack. It's the constant thick fog, especially in SH1 and SH2 that's surrounding you. It's how your flashlight can only let you see ten feet in front you while you're running outside in the dark, and your radio is blaring white noise (i.e. something is close by, but you can't see it).

Silent Hill does have its share of action sequences as well, it's not "kill the occasional demon". More like, "kill a bunch of these things that look so messed up I don't even want to know what they were."

I was speaking idiomatically.

To add more to it...

How can you compare in terms of scare/freak factor something like this (75% of the game is this anyway)

to this

or this

You'll pretty much feel like the girl up there after playing Silent Hill for the first time.

Silent Hill definitely leaves a lot to your imagination. You come across hallways like this:

There's no explanation. You're left wondering about the bullet holes. About the blood. About what could possibly be down that elevator shaft.

Seeing as how all the enemies in SH are retards and you face no risk of actually dying, it isn't scary at all.

What's in the bathtub? A teletubbie. No really, tell (show) me. And if you can't suffer any real damage, then is it possible just to run around the room shooting at whatever acting like an idiot? Oh wait, limited ammo.

BTW, that chick from SH3 is pretty cute, IMO.

This is actually true...

But the scare factor isn't in the threat of the enemies. It's in the atmosphere.
