I don't see any point in guides unless you are seriously stuck, like *been stuck for 3 days* I remember my auntie bought OOT and at the same time bought the guide, and sat and played as she was reading the guide!? >_> I was thinking she should've just bought the guide and read it, as that just completely takes everything away from the game imo.
I've used gamefaqs about twice for I think it was something silly like Silent hill 3 when it came to the part near the end... I really like the way guides look though especially final fantasy ones... Actually when I was younger I read a full super mario 64 guide over and over because I was getting the game for christmas and couldn't wait... and then when I played it I knew where every star was -_- There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() John Mayer just asked me, personally, through an assistant, to sing backup on his new CD. |
I have quite a few guides (around 20+), most of which are just gifts from people who thought it was a good "go-along" present with the actual game. For the most part I would play through up to a certain point, than read the guide up to that point to see if I missed anything.
I guess since I'm older now I've adopted Shin's opinion on strategy guides. It's not really worth the trouble of reading an entire guide to find the 3 or 4 things you've missed anyway. Now, for the occasional puzzle I can't do or (since I'm playing Valkyrie Profile-Lenneth right now) the ending I wouldn't be able to get on my own, I just go to gameFAQs, and make sure not to accidentally click on the "Forums" tab there. I was speaking idiomatically. |
I have guides for alpha anthology, street fighter anniversary collection, panzer dragoon saga and timesplitters 3 (which is shit compared to the rest but was part of a bundle deal) I'll admit gamefaqs is indispensable when it comes to game advice like unlockables but there are some guides I think are better suited for book format rather then a glorified notepad file.
I understand, QCF HCF, turtle style and all that for example in street fighter, but I think the more advanced combo reminders and timings are much easier to read in charts for example which gamefaqs rarely uses, and when they do it's normally a bunch of. ______________________ |______________________| |_squares like this!_______| |______________________| No offense to them trying to save bandwidth, but that shit is so html ver 1.0 -_- and anyone who's tried to follow a notepad based tomb raider game guide with that kinda basic layout will know what I'm talking about How ya doing, buddy?

I never bother with guides, since I don't have the time to complete every single thing in a game, and when I do get stuck I just use Gamefaqs.
I have bought some of the Ultimania Guides here though, namely FF XII and Xenosaga III (may buy more if I have enough money), not really for the walkthrough, but because they offer tons of extras on the games like interviews, artwork, etc. FELIPE NO |
The Doublejump guide. ![]() Absolutely inde-fucking-spensible. I don't like frustration when it comes to games. I'm doing it for fun. Recreation. So yeah. I'll buy guides. Because game design is never perfect, and at times, not just not perfect, but absolutely retarded. I can find a balance between finding a challenge and using a strategy with additional info. Or, as much as one or the other as I want. If I'm playing a game to work things out, like a Zelda title, I'm probably not going to buy the guide. Most rpgs that have absurd or no hints to hidden end game extras, I'll buy 'em. You're going to uncover some of the battle trophies of Star Ocean 3 or the bazaar goods of FFXII all on your own. Good luck. And I like having the something physical at my fingertips. Going back and forth from controller to keyboard, eh, it's worth the 15 bucks, plus the collectors value. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() so they may learn the glorious craft of acting from the dear leader |
Here's all guides I have:
I don't buy guides mainly for the walktrought, it more piece of collection even if I don't have a lot XD (I have other thing to buy before a game guide XD) or I buy guides for games I'm not good at, which was the case for SH2 and RE. silent Hill 2 was my first horror game and my first guide. I was so scared the first time I played that I didn't touch the game for one years before trying to finish it XD and I use the guide all the way through the game to know what was coming at me XD The guide is good. It's base on the normal mode of the game but at each puzzle they show the solution for both normal and hard riddle mode. It was good to know which room has which item and which room as monster only XD The design of the guide is perfect for the time of game, with color that match SH2 atmosphere and all ^^ I bought RE guide at the same time that I buy the game. I just suck at Resident Evil (except RE4 XD) I always take one and even 2 clip before killing one zombie XD So I use it mainly to go straight to the item I want and to know where are the monster that I have to evade XD I really like the secret sealed section which show all the ending and how to get them. Final Fantasy VIII guide was because I love FFVIII and decided to buy the guide for the hell of it XD but it was really for sidequest and to know which monster drop which item for some weapon ^^ I pretty well done guide. I bought Final Fantasy XII Collector Edition mainly for the artwork ^^ but I'm the kind of guy that like to go straight for the story the first playthrough and do sidequest after. So all those guide help me to go where I want without getting lost or searching for nothing. For now I use it only when I,m lost and for information on bosses. I'm curently playing the game and so far the guide helped ok. I think it will shine when I'll start to do all the hunt or want all the ultimate weapon of the game ^^ The artbook is awesome too but sadly I got stupid Vaan cover ; ; (wanted Basch or Ashe) Again the KH2 one was mainly for the artbook and I got the "yellow" cover which was the one I wanted ^^ I didn't really use the guide because I bought it after completing the game XD this one was really mainly for the collection purpose ^^ I think I use it for the little sidequest for the ultimate keyblade. and finaly the Zelda one was a gift from nintendo power. I didn't use it much at first because I wanted to finish the game on my own first. I check it only when I was like totally lost (like in the stupid "sky temple" -_-) and it help me a lot to get all pieces of heart and all the sidequest ^^ well I guest I can't be more precise about all the guides I have lol Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
