Similarly to you, I started off with the movies (dubbed and VHS which was tapped off of a Space Channel speccial) and had no clue what was going on. This was in about 2000 where anime wasn't quite mainstream where I lived and only the Asians were into it from Hong Kong and the like. Basically most of the anime I watched I rented from Blockbuster and ANYTHING would be fine, English dubs were not a problem at this time. After watching the first movie, this was the first time I heard the Asahi no Naka theme and immediately fell in love with it, watching the ending credits roll over and over again JUST to listen to that theme, no matter how old the VHS tape was. Good old days...LOL

This was about the heyday of Napster and I quickly snatched up the Patlabor movie OST (which I lost on my old computer and never got it again, thus far), but I listened to the "Asahi no Naka" mp3 I believe over 20 times in one sitting, loving the blast of the trumpets and orchestra and everything in me just melted. I also did get the Patlabor 2 OST (again, lost in my old computer because the harddrive was retarded, but Q sent it to me) and immediately the Main Theme, Outbreak/Wyvern, and last but definately not least, Hallucination. All these tracks were done by Kenji Kawai.

After watching the first movie, I somehow wanted to learn more about the cast and went onto the Internet and sought after the TV series. On of my friends already had some of the TV episodes on CD and 7 part OVA on VHS. Boom, I was a fan. Man...oh man... now I realized how much I loved this series in such a short period of time. I'm guessing Q has seen this quite a while ago before I did though. Q, you're my hero.
Haha, I'm flattered, but I had to do with the first movie and the first two volumes of the manga for the longest time. Upon getting a PS2, I finally had access to DVD and eventually got both films on DVD, that was the first time I finally got to see Patlabor 2, which I had wanted to see for so long.

At that point, the TV series was "available" on some very random VHS tapes, but since I at best would have only gotten some like episodes 8-12 and 25-29 or something similar, I stayed out of that. Eventually I heard the good news that CPM was bringing the series out on DVD, and immediately bought the first volume. By the time I heard CPM had decided to release the rest in boxsets, I was extatic, I didn't even care I kinda had to buy the first disc twice (it's still on my shelf and the old CG cover is hideous). Then the original OVA came out (bliss) and eventually the third TV box and New Files (zomg), which I still haven't bought, but definitely will eventually.

As for the manga, it and the TV series follows the same "main" plotline. The start of SV-2, the early incidents, the Brocken, the Griffin, Schaft and all that, but the manga and anime differ on many individual tales since they were made longside each other for a while. If I understood correctly, the manga follows the original OVA slightly, then goes off on its own direction, and many of the chapters later formed episodes in the TV series.

The very first case the team had to solve (or overcome) was completely different in the manga. There was no Ingram theft, or nothing like that. The crab tank that ran rampant around Tokyo set the tone absolutely perfectly for me, because it showed the attention to detail and realism the series had. Whereas stopping the tank was a priority, this was in the middle of Tokyo, so the police forces had to be very careful about where they'd confront the runaway tank with as little collateral damage as possible. Goto deviced a careful plan to try and lure the tank out of appartment areas and following all of it was really intense. Patlabor was also so appealing because it was much more realistic and honest compared to many of the other mecha titles at the time.

I highly recommend reading the manga if you haven't, even if it's just the first two volumes Viz brought out (one of the biggest crimes was how not enough people bought it ;_; ). Kumagami's entrance is also completely different in the manga.

Jesus, I just noticed Kumagami's VA, Keiko Yokozawa was also Sheeta in Laputa. Awesome! ='D

There's nowhere I can't reach.

The more I look at it, the more I want to get the first two volumes of the manga from Viz, even though I will be left off with like the remaining 20 volumes in Japanese. Looks like I know what I want to get come this years anime fest.

As well, I don't know how well you are familiar with Bandai products, but they have released a somewhat new line of Gundam toys called "Gundam Fix Figuration". I have 5 of these, but what would ABSOLUTELY make my day is if they were to release this:

This toy line would pretty much be the counterpart to the quite popular Gundam Fix Figuration line of already made models.

Features include:

• Opening cockpit and removable pilot.
• Changeable head so you can put on the riot visor.
• Left and right legs can open up on the side so the Ingram can reach for the 37 mm revolver.
• Posable characters in 1/35 scale
• Made of the same type of “plastic” as the GFF line
• Made by Bandai

Models (all 1/35 scale):

1) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0001: AV-98 Ingram – Alphonse
2) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0002: AV-98 Ingram – Ota
3) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0003: AV-98 Ingram – 3rd
4) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0004: AV Type Zero ( as seen in the first movie)
5) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0005: HAL-X10
6) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0006: Construction Labor HL-96 Tyrant
7) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0007: Roadrunner (seen in 2nd movie crossing the Yokohama bridge)
8) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0008: ARL – Military Hell Diver
9) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0009: Command Car and Capt Gotoh’s mini car
10) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0010: EXLT Spider Tank Labor (2nd movie)
11) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0011: Attack Helicopter Gong-1 (2nd movie)
12) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0012: Al-97 Hannibal (2nd movie)
13) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0013: RAHDA (UN Forces) (2nd movie)
14) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0014: Construction Labor HL-97 Bulldog
15) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0015: Shaft Enterprises – Phantom
16) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0016: Shaft Enterprises – Griffon
17) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0017: Type-5G/1C Grau-Bear
18) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0018: SV-2 Labor Carrier (Holy crap this thing would be HUEG like the Xbox)
19) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0019: ULTIMA RATIO air blimps (I’m not too sure about 1/35 scale though)
20) Patlabor Fix Figuration 0020: Type-7B/2B Brocken

Accessories
1) Flak Jackets to cover over Ingrams as seen in the 2nd movie.
2) Keisatsu – Police Cruiser (diorama prop)
3) BEL – 1999 Caldia (those small red little sentry bots guarding the Arc)

I could seriously think of way more kits for this if I were to scour the Patlabor TV series/movies again. Yeah, how sweet would this be!

I guess a far retail price would be about $40 USD each for most of these items, but some will be more, some less. The Labor carrier would be probably close to $90 some.
Damn, Bandai would be the Toy God if they were to ever do something so awesome like that.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Now you went and made me change my set. I'm just gonna be stuck listening to Condition Green and Midnight Blue for the rest of the evening.

Anyway, incidentally, if we were more fluent in French, there's 12 volumes of the manga out in France ;_; Seems like they're going with the original 22 volume format, instead of the rerelease.

Now if only someone fluent in french and english would take it upon them to scanlate it all ._.

Where's ^___^ when you need him, but I doubt he's into anime and the likes (doesn't he have a Azumanga av/sig?)

I took like BASIC BASIC French in highschool and I read the X/1999 Clamp Manga (Understood about 40-60% of the text) in French when I was a exchange student to Quebec. Now I suck at French and my Japanese is probably better, but that's not saying much.

So yeah: things to look out for (our wish list)

1) A New Patlabor TV series

2) Patlabor 4 movie

3) PS3 Patlabor Game (can someone say WIN?)

4) Those spiffy Patlabor Fix Figurations

If wish # 3 comes out, I'll have a good reason not to commit suicide. LOL.

EDIT: Condition Green, I love that song <3 Same with Mihara wa Lovers.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I just want Ito to write new Patlabor anything (and Oshii to direct, naturally).

Even if they translate the Patlabor PS1 game I'd be delirious with happiness, the new crew member looked so cool.

As for Face, he's into anime, he likes Scrapped Princess, One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist and I remember hooking him up with Evangelion torrents, but I don't think he'd want to translate Patlabor for us

How ya doing, buddy?

Seeing with all the fansubbing going on, it'd be nice from them to scan translate the Japanese manga version. I wonder if anyone would be nice enough to do something like that. I saw a few screenshots (which are very hard to come by) the PS1 game - Patlabor Game Edition and it..well...didn't look too exciting. And for the Super Famicom version, I never got passed the 3rd mission. Those bad guys were tough! ;_;...

EDIT: I also see you put a little link in your sig there. Thanks! <3

Well, I have the PS1 game and while the Ingram sections are a bit clumsy, it's still Patlabor, and Headgear created a new crew member, Midori, just for the game and she looked really cool~

Herm, I'm guessing you're running it off of your special PS2 then hey. I wonder if there's a way to ISO it and then use a PSX emulator. Most copies I've seen on Playasia are selling for about $50 USD plus used, and that's a pretty killer price in the bad way.

Pyocola, I thought you did understand some basic Japanese because you were asking about furigana?

Well, it's a burned copy (you think I can find much less afford a real copy as much as I'd like one? ;_; ), so I'm sure it'll ISO easily. Playing it on an emulator is a different matter, but only one way to find out of course.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Well, very, very basic as I only took one year Japanese. Had I wasted my three high-school years on French instead of German the French volumes would probably have been a lot easier.

Still, I'm thinking of getting a Japanese set; Animaxis currently has a complete set of the re-releases for about $50. Only problem is that their shipping fees are exorbitant so maybe I should ask yesasia if they can stock them first. At least I will probably not have to worry about customs since it seems they usually ignore packages containing books (even though they technically should charge 6% VAT.)

Good old Patlabor. Years and years ago one of the first anime movies I saw was Patlabor. It was as awesome back then as it still is. Though I came to appreciate 2nd movie only later.

That also reminds me that I still haven't finished the TV series (or was it OVA >_>), as Q has been hiding the boxset from me >=0
And THAT brings up the idea that we really should watch both movies one of these days, Q-d00d.

Well, my TV is bigger than yours, but we can't both fit in my room on the other hand. Watching the films at ihank would be impossible as well, and I don't want to come all the way to your house ._.

Need to figure out some compromise though. I've felt like rewatching the films for a while now, can we wait till I get the remastered version of the first film? =D

Also, I think I've been keeping the OVA box from you. I thought you downloaded the eps later anyway =/

EDIT:
I'm all for a chain. Pyocola already has Shinobu =D
I actually meant to make an Asuma avatar, but I realized all my Masami Yuki drawings of him were a bit too small for it, so this Noa pic was fine. I absolute LOVE Ota in the background, in the Ingram suit

Drunken Kanuka and Noa is awesome too <3

It will take a while before I rewatch Patlabor 1 and 2, since I saw them in 2005, and I usually see them MAYBE once a year, because they're that good. Anymore would be a crime. Plus I'd like to see it with my hopefully new TV this Xmas. Chances are, I'd probably replay ICO again before watching. Too bad I don't know of too many Patlabor fans near my area. ;_;

Well yeah, I only know one Patlabor fan near me, and he's about two towns away *points up above*

I've kept my movie watching pretty annual, though there's been a slight delay upon acquiring the TV series and OVA as that's kept me Patlabor happy for a while now. I'm getting more and more excited about the remastered DVD now, I hope it works out ;_;

All this Patlabor talk has made me somewhat giddy. It's Friday April 7 afternoon now at 3:36 PM and it's one hour till I get out of the office. Once I get home I'll be sure to make a new Av/Sig, but I'm now thinking of Goto, or maybe even Shinobu. Building my plastic kits and listening to Ingram (remix) and Knock on Tomorrow should get my Patlabor fix for a while.

Make sure you find a very good Goto picture for an avatar, or I'll have your head >=0

Goto-san must always be well presented and respectable (even if he appears like such an awesomely lazy wish-wash in the manga). And you already called Kanuka ;_; Think of the awesome "SHUT UP!" you could have in your custom title!

I need either his dopey face or the screenshot of him smoking a cig.
For the sig I might use him in his patrol car in the 2nd movie, by the standoff at the Japanese Parliament. Ah damn who to choose who to choose? Although I'll admit I have do have the secret hots for Kanuka. I love her saucy attitude.

Wait, what the hell am I saying? I hated her ratting on Takeo in the New OVA where they are at the Onsen resort and Takeo couldn't come up with the names of some historical figures. God I wanted to slap Kanuka for being such a BITCH! She's like ...umm... one of the staff on GFF..yeah...

But but think about Kanuka ;_; So many awesome scenes.

"Sightseeing?"
"No." *removes subglasses*
"Combat."

Also incidentally, I knew I'd sent the Patlabor movie OST to someone, since I still had it rarred up. I guess I just hadn't sent it to you, but someone else =P

Okay fine. Kanuka did look the most "hot" in the episode where the plane gets hi-jacked by that creepy mouse guy, especially with her hair tied back in that pony tail, god...spuzzum. It was hilarious when the flight attendant said thanks to the "passanger" since flight attendants were expected to be the utmost polite professionals in the Japanese service industry. Makes me want to take Japan Air the next time I head over there. Too bad her seiyuu passed away like 3 years ago, according to Schaft Enterprises.

Well, after doing a google search, I get like all of six "wonderful" image results:

Damn, now I'm worried about someone "stealing" my current Densha Otoko bunny set up. It's one of my favorites and many people seem to like it.

Boo-kun, Patlabor Marathon to the max!!! (those remastered DVDs seem pretty nice right about now)...

Hey Q, it's been decided:

Kanuka Clancy

Looks:I'd crawl naked over broken glass and razor blades with my wrists and ankles bound just to look into her eyes. This is clearly one of the most beautiful and unique looking women in anime. This woman can make anything from a black lace negligee to an AV-98 Ingram look sexy when she's wearing it. Expect a lot of envious heads to turn in your direction with this lady on your arm.

Smarts: She's got 'em serving as she does as a command car driver. You don't give the task of keeping Ohta in line to an idiot. Her assignment to evaluate the operations of a functioning Patrol Labor Unit for the sake of establishing a similar unit in New York indicates that she has above average capacity for observation and organization. This lady's brains more than keeps up with her body.

Personality: Direct. She does not believe in mincing words or beating about the bush. Professionally she is quick to action almost to the point of being rash (jumping into AV-00 and taking it into action with a suspect OS was not that bright). You would best be advised to develop a thick skin if you're going to spend any time with her for you will know what she thinks in no uncertain terms. However, I suspect that a woman with this tough an exterior is concealing a very soft, loving and generous interior. She clearly cares deeply for the members of SV2 and if you can earn her devotion you will have a loving and faithful companion for the rest of your life.

Home Economics: Even her temporary apartment in Japan was meticulously maintained. Expect your household to be similarly kept and learn to keep your feet off the furniture. Cooking skills are unknown but I expect that she's no slouch in the kitchen. Kanuka clearly puts everything she has into whatever she does. Expect, however, that you will not be watching TV with a beer in your hand while she prepares dinner. You will be expected to contribute whatever you can to the tasks of household maintainance. And god help your butt if you don't.

Combat Skills: *DO NOT* piss this woman off. This lady lives to bust heads. Hand-to-hand, firearms, katana, labor; this lady can kick ass with any of them. I don't expect New York City has gotten any safer in the time "Patlabor" takes place. That she's a street patrol officer there indicates that her combat skills are not only to be respected but worshipped. Gotou certainly thinks so.

Customs Agent: "Sightseeing?"

Kanuka: "No. Combat."

Need I say more?

Special Abilities: Nothing supernatural, magical, or super-scientific. She is a qualified labor pilot, speaks at least two languages fluently, can outdrink most people except one.

Competition: None known with the possible exception of her career. However, we know very little of who might be waiting for her back in New York. Make no mistake, though. Finding your way into this lady's heart will be no easy task. Smooth words alone will not cut it here. You are going to have to be at least as tough as she is. This is not a woman to squander her affections on the unworthy.

In-Laws: No data known on the specifics of her family but I suspect that if Kanuka has decided on you she will brook no grief from them over her decision. You'd be best advised to get a long well with them, though, for no doubt she will be as devoted to them as she will be to you.

Finances: Cops have been traditionally underpaid for what they do and I suspect things haven't changed much in "Patlabor's" time. She dresses well so I suspect she makes enough to live comfortably and she will probably get a raise once she moves over into the new New York Labor unit (any income derived from working for C.L.A.T. cannot be depended upon) but don't expect to be living in the lap of luxury, particularly not in an expensive place like New York City.

Sex: Whoa Boy! Watching this woman undress will probably be enough to generate multiple orgasms. Certain depictions of her suggest she has other uses for hand-cuffs beyond restraining those she arrests. Expect her to be completely in control of most sexual encounters though this type can also derive considerable sexual pleasure by occasionally putting herself completely under your control. In either case there will be no false modesty or shyness here. Expect her to be as direct sexually as she is in everything else. Pray that you are up to the task.

Overall: This woman is not for the squeamish or the hesitant. You had better be sure of yourself if Kanuka is your goal. Remember also that she is a front-line cop so you will have all the risks and fears attendant with being the spouse of a cop. I suspect, though, that given her talent she will be offered command of her own unit (probably the Labor unit) in no time. I also suspect that this will not stop her from taking the controls of a labor from time to time so the risks probably won't be diminished by promotion. Beyond the possibility of the dreaded visit from her unit commander this woman has much to offer as a wife to anyone lucky enough to win her heart. She will be loving, competent, devoted and probably a lot of fun. So take a number and get in line.
Okay, she wins. ^ ^

But we can't watch the movies downstairs, they're region 0, but our stupid DVD player refused to play them

I searched "Kanuka" and came accross the most wonderful gallery. Patlabor, PlanetES AND Haibane Renmei all on the same page? Yes, please~~

I took a couple of screens of Shinobu from Minipato to use as sig.

From my favourite part, I just love the deep voice of Sakakibara Yoshiko. ^_^; (plus the Oshiiness of it all)
