Challenge of the Ancient Empires, right?

The Super Solvers series was pretty cool overall. I dropped so many hours into Outnumbered and Spellbound as a kid.

Correct! Yeah, they were pretty enjoyable alright. I had Challenge of the Ancient Empires and Operation Neptune for DOS back then.

Crap, I knew that one. ._.

Personally, my favorite of the Super Solvers series was Gizmos and Gadgets. But I have to give Spellbound credit, as I doubt I would have passed nearly as many spelling tests without it.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Gizmos and Gadgets! I never actually owned a copy of that game, but I played it at a friend's house once. Downloaded a copy from The Macintosh Garden about a year ago and played through it. <3

Ah, The Learning Company and MECC (Oregon Trail, Munchers series). They were the heroes of my younger days.

I used to be good at this game, but wow I sucked while taking this screenshot.

Triumph? I only remember this from a preview I saw in a Nintendo Players mag.

I'd never heard of Triumph, but I decided to look it up in case of regional names and so forth, and it seems that it was an NES game that was never released. (It should be pretty clear that the screenshot is NOT from the NES.)

However, while searching, I found German box art detail (presumably never actually printed) here, and I recognize all those characters from in-game. Compare the pigs:

My guess is that Triumph is either a failed NES port, or the game was cancelled and retooled for the Game Boy (hopefully at least that part of the pics was obvious). So, basically, what I'm saying is, you're really close. Enough that I think I'm willing to give it to you if these screenshots don't help anyone:

I figured there'd be no problem with this one because I actually owned a copy, but I've been looking on the internet, and wow. There's next to nothing about it.

Yeah, I even tried to find more information about Triumph after posting, but couldn't find any. Though the article (found in Game Player's Strategy Guide to Nintendo Games, July 1991 issue) had a single screenshot which was nearly identical to the this one , identical as in the exact board but with a little difference in unit placement, and had "Triumph for Game Boy" as a heading. Then it goes off to say how it was Hudson Soft's first Game Boy title, a strategy game set in a medieval world called Joker Land, in which you have to do battle with an Orc King/Arch Orc or something. My guess it could have been a tentative title. Or probably shoddy journalism? Anyways, now that I know the real title, I'm gonna try the ROM for sure because it looks like fun. I also recall being interested with the idea after first reading that. =)

Current screenshot looks mighty familiar...

EDIT: Had a hunch it was another Lynx game. It's Crystal Mines II.
