I like how no one has brought up the fact that we went through a locked-out season to get a financial model which would help keep every team alive and in place, and now one of the best is likely to move.

Gary Bettman = fail

Hey.... HEY. Bettman saved canadian hockey franchises. His little plan worked, he can't do shit about a city not wanting to finance a new arena.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I hate to interrupt your discussion that's going oh so well so I'll summarize. The Sens have sucked royally for at least 3 of the last 4 games. Against Boston, the players were awful and against Tampa Bay, Emery was awful ontop of the fact that the players were still pretty bad. If we don't beat Philly, I'm going to cry. That is all.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

You realise you're saying Chara is the worst trade ever to someone who watched Joe Thornton go to San Jose for a bag full of pucks and a half-used pack of cigarettes, right?

I was speaking idiomatically.

As a closet Bruins fan, I object to Brad Stuart and Marco Sturm being called a bag full of pucks and a half-used pack of cigarettes.

Wayne Primeau, however...

Watch the video. It's kind of tame by Bertuzzi standards, but still suspension-worthy.

For kicks: Ulf Samuelsson gets knocked the fuck out by Tie Domi years ago. That's what he gets for ruining Cam Neely's career.

Hockey presents from Christmas:

One blue Vancouver Canucks vintage jersey (Luongo)
One blue Vancouver Canucks vintage jersey (Unnamed)
Two Canucks tickets to the January 7th game vs. Florida Panthers (Bertuzzi, Allen, Auld [Even though Bert is injured ])

The plan for the second jersey is to exchange it for a white vintage and get Bieksa or Mitchell on the back of it. Maybe Henrik Sedin. But i was leaning towards Bieksa because I want to have a name that not many others have.

Did you guys get anything to do with your favourite teams?

The Red Wings retired Steve Yzerman's #19 tonight. His name now hangs up there alongside names such as Sawchuck and Howe. But unlike those other players, Yzerman was the one I grew up watching for years. And he's the great player and role model I'll tell my kids and grandkids I got to watch when I'm older. Maybe Detroit will find another player like him someday, but it could be a long time before that happens. He had the ability to score, getting 155 points one season, a number only topped by Gretzky and Lemieux. He had the ability to change his playing style for the good of the team, winning the Selke Trophy and three Stanley Cups. He always gave all his effort and never gave up, as shown when he played with an injured knee and foot for a month before winning a Stanley Cup. He's a great player that should always be remembered, and I'm glad to see his number go up there.

Oh, and Detroit beat Anaheim in the game too.

The NHL has made available for purchase the 2007 NHL All-Star Game jerseys, but only the personalizable and authentic ones. Price: $425

Note that these are the new, form-fitting jerseys the NHL is planning to use for the upcoming 2007-08 season, and the full extent of the jerseys are expected to be unveiled during the All-Star Game and/or break.

Edit: looks like they didn't want to do that.

I was speaking idiomatically.

The Canucks are hot right now, having won 5 straight and 8 of 11.

Luongo has been fantastic, especially last night vs. Dallas, when he made 39 saves (1 goal against) and five more saves in the shootout, helping Vancouver win 2-1 in a shootout. He basically held us in the game for the last two periods and overtime in a game that we shouldn't have won. It was magic to watch.

This was only the second time since the lockout that Dallas had lost in a shootout, dropping their shootout record to 15-2.

On our five-game streak we beat Edmonton, Dallas, and Calgary (3 times). It's been a treat to see them completely shut down Iginla and co. three times in a week. Next up is Edmonton again and then Florida on Sunday (I'll be there live for that one).

Notes:

-Luongo was named the NHL's first star of the night, albeit there were only 3 games played
-Markus Naslund hasn't scored in 16 games
-The Canucks have the second best penalty kill in the NHL (87.6%), including the top PK at home, with an inhuman 93.6%. Montreal has the best PK at 88.0%.
-Vancouver is 8-1 in overtime this year (6-0 in the 5 minute period; 2-1 in the shootout)
-Vancouver's recent ability to put the puck in the net is largely due to the defense jumping up into the play (Mattias Ohlund 10 points in last 11; Kevin Bieksa 11 points in last 12) and the rising powerplay

Watching the Bruins get their asses handed to them, 9-2 by the Maple Leafs right now. Everyone in the game day thread on the Bruins board is rooting for 10.

Ok, I realize that this is a really old question, but I didn't ask it, hoping to find the answer out sometime in the near future, but I never did.

What happened to Darrell Sutter? He just disappeared from his head coach position in Calgary. Was he fired because the team didn't do so well in the '06 playoffs? Or is it some other issue? And where did this Playfair guy come from?

Sutter is just the General Manager of the Flames now, and Playfair was the assistant coach for the last few years. Hah, who would fire Sutter after those last two seasons?

Bigger goals needed eh? Three games went into double digits (SJ-DET had 13 goals, BOS-TOR 12, DAL-EDM 11) and 5 games went over the average of 4 goals/game.

We just need more bad defense.

How ya doing, buddy?

This is apparently why the Dallas-Edmonton game last night went into overtime. Dallas still won, but Patrik Stefan's probably gonna be hearing about this for a while.

Hagman had a silly, Ovechkin-esque goal in that same game

10-2!!!!!!!

but it was falling forward and he could see what he was doing so it's not nearly as good.

Do you actually think Ovechkin knew what the hell he was doing? It was a completely fluke goal. I'm tired of hearing people think that he actually had the time to think about how he was going to score this goal as he fell on his stomach, heading for a wall. I'm still surprised that the goalie didn't move over any faster.
