The only game I regret wasting 500 points on is super mario. If I hadn't bought that back then, I'd still have that many points plus the points that is left of what i have now and the other 200 points. Oh well, Super Metroid it is. Shinobi'll have to wait. I wonder why part 1 wasn't added first (not 2 obviously since that came out for gamegear..) .

Never played anything from the Shinobi series so I really don't care about that one. Super Metroid, I'll download so I can see why everyone likes it so much.

chato, thanks for taking over. I won't be able to do these VC Mondays much anymore, because I don't get home till 6pm.

It's funny...

I bought Metroid 3 on the VC expecting the same great game I played and loved on the SNES.
But I just can't stop thinking that the GBA's Zero Mission is way better. I don't know what it is. Until this point in time, I used to hold Metroid 3 in the highest regard of the Metroid-verse, and now it's a close second to Zero Mission.

Maybe I'm having difficulty in having fun because I'm using the GC controller? I guess I'll try using my PS2-to-GC adapter and hook a real controller up and see how that feels.

Being able to play classics like Super Metroid on my TV without combing eBay was one of the reasons I wanted a Wii so bad. Now I only need some quality Square titles to truly be happy (Secret of Mana and Mario RPG, I'm looking at you.)

Matt: The Classic Controller is a pretty close match to the old SNES one. I've read some comments that say the D-pad is too sensitive and makes pulling off certain moves difficult, but I really haven't had any trouble. If you're going to be playing lots of VC games (especially SNES) it's a pretty good investment.

I was speaking idiomatically.

This picture of a My Little Pony represents my failure to review the Mix CD that was sent to me. Like this image, I am a shining beacon of shame and disgrace.

Not to be hating on the VC or anything, but I've always found the easiest way to play games on my TV was to hook a laptop running an emulator up to my TV and use a USB controller converter. If you don't have a laptop and have a PC in the same room, just get a really long s-video cable. It worked great for me while at school, because I didn't want to bring out my SNES, its cables, and all of the games I own because I had such limited space, but I was able to play games just as if I had the real cartridges with me.

I never took my Classic Controller out of its case and returned it a few weeks ago. I find that the price for games is just too high, more than I'd pay at least, and I hate how long it takes them to get a game to release.

I don't think I'm gonna get the classic controller; the GC one'll hopefully do the job well enough, anyway.

And reaver, I'd hope that the official VC system would actually be better than any emulator; about no emulator does sound and music emulation of the SNES correctly. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME. Also, if 'Nigma ever gets released, that'd mean hearing it for real.

I only use my Classic Controller if I'm too lazy to whip out the sensor bar. Because I have to pack it up so often it's a hassle trying to keep that sensor bar in place.

And if I'm only playing a Gamecube game, I don't really need to waste time whipping out the bar, so I just use the Classic Controller to move around.

On top of that, for some games I found it easier to use the the Classic Controller instead of the Gamecube controller. Mario Kart and Paper Mario seem to top my list on that. And anyone who downloaded the Street Fighter games, I'd figure that would be easier, since the GC has an unholy control pad and button. scheme.

I got a Classic Controller the other day, solely because I was buying Super Metroid and Paper Mario. I'll probably use it for other VC games now that I have it, mainly for two reasons: Wireless [my setup isn't really suitable to play games unless I have an extension cord for a GC controller,] and... Well, as Chaotic said, the GC controller pad sucks, and the button scheme can get pretty annoying.

Well after a lame update from SSBB, there is nothing great coming for the VC but maybe one.

Super C - NES
Breath of Fire 2 -SNES
Ghouls-n-Ghosts - Genesis

Feel free to throw hate comments. BoF 2 was another rpg game I stopped playing years ago.

Well, prepare to be disappointed.

Most VC titles suffer from a whole bunch of technical problems; if you've played the original games on their original console, the experience doesn't even come anywhere close.

Obviously, Nintendo is only able to charge ridiculous prices for this crap because there are people stupid enough to pay for it. "Retro gaming" is overrated.

What technical problems are you referring to? I haven't had any issues with a single VC game I've downloaded so far, except for Metroid not allowing me to enter a password for some reason.

As for this week's games, I might download BoF2. I have the first BoF on SNES, but never gave the second one a try.

What do you mean, "what technical problems"? I told you about two of the problems I've had. In Actraiser, the first town contains a bunch of gibberish, and if I try to build further, the game freezes; using earthquake didn't solve the problem. In Kirby's Dream Course, the brightness level keeps going up and down (especially when I hit the Y button to look around the course). Neither error makes the games unplayable, but they're certainly annoying.

What technical problems are you referring to?
- PAL optimized games suffering from major slowdown
- Display errors when using component cables (due to non-supported 240p resolution)
- No Rumble Pak support for N64 games
- Pixelated bitmaps in N64 games
- No support for Controller Pak only games
- No controller configuration/remapping options
- Distorted image on 16:9 displays (needs manual switch to 4:3)
- No analog button support for GC controller
- Poor sound emulation for SNES games

These are just a few of the problems I've been encountering. I guess you can easily overlook these if you're not asking for a 100% true to original experience or have never played the originals, but for someone looking for "perfect emulation" these things are major disappointments.

Well, the Actraiser issue seemed extremely minor and no one else who downloaded it seemed to have the same problem. The brightness issue is pretty terrible, but it's still a far cry from "Most VC titles suffer from a whole bunch of technical problems."

Well rather rumble support for Wii and GameCube controllers and an extra set of memory blocks for controller pak storage but yeah. These features should have been fixed ages ago but Nintendo is like naw we is lazy bastard. It's really inexusible considering we're paying for decade old games to play proficiently on a semi-modern console. For that matter the lack of individual savestates and hexediting/gamegenie/actionreplay makes it highly inferior to the PC emulation experience. The fact that they take so fucking long to turn out games and especially ones people might actually want to play makes this shit inexcusable.

- Poor sound emulation for SNES games
Rock, are you sure it's the sound emulation that's poor? As I remember it, the SNES had a limited number of audio channels (8 wasn't it?) in the first place. So maybe, just maybe, it's the fact that a lot of times developers tried to squeeze multiple sounds on the same channel and wound up canceling certain sounds out.
For instance it happens on Metroid 3 on the SNES: The music gets canceled out by ambient sounds every so often. And it happens again on the VC version.

What I'm waiting on is some Mega Man X action. Who else wants an X pack triple drop of pure awesome one Monday afternoon? It'd make my week. (and my wallet $24 lighter)
