Well, good news for all you PS3 owners. The latest update lets you upscale various media up to 1080p, amongst other things. Not as "epic" an announcement as the rumored 2.0 firmware, but it's something:

Quote:
Latest PLAYSTATION 3 Firmware Update Provides PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and DVD Upscaling, Remote Play on PSP (PlayStation Portable) via the Internet and DLNA transfer of media content also enabled.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.

The capability to upscale DVDs to HD quality is a feature normally only associated with top range DVD players, and its inclusion in the latest firmware upgrade now allows PS3 owners with an existing DVD collection to dramatically enhance the viewing pleasure of their DVD collection when viewed through a compatible HD TV set. Not only can DVD movies be enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.

In a comprehensive update to PS3’s already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.

Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3’s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.

A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3’s hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.

PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.

1. DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) can only be upscaled with HDMI compatible TV sets.

2. Use of Remote Play requires a powered up PS3 with Version 1.80 as well as PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of May.

3. DLNA – Digital Living Network Alliance. For more info on DLNA, please see http://www.dlna.org/en/consumer/home

god I didn't even got into this one either >.< ....

what I want to know now is: Will the upscaling of ps1 and ps2 game work only on the PAL ps3 or on all ps3? (since PAL ps3 use software emulation instead of hardware)

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Heh, still no wallpaper features....that sucks....

Well, at least they reckon we'll get an upgrade in graphics (I think) when playing PS2 games (I'm really not so sure for PS1 games though). Better quality DVD images is always a plus too I guess. Anyone uploaded the firmware yet and tried it out? I'll probably have a go later on...

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Hey, what's the deal with that 80 GB version of the system that's coming out? Can we expect a drop in price of the 60 GB version, and if so, by how much? Just wondering if anybody has any opinions on this.

It's for Korea only, and no, you cannot expect a price drop.

Sony said in a recent release that they're thinking of bringing it stateside. If they do they'll probably just put 80Gb HDDs in the 60GB models instead of going back to 2 SKUs. And no, you won't see a price cut because of this.

As for the new update. When it said that it upscales PS1 & 2 games to 1080p, does that mean that they're in native 16:9, or do I still have to play the games in 4:3?

Apparently, there's two modes you can set it in, Limited and Full. The former seems to be 4:3, while the later stretches the picture to fit a widescreen TV (16:9).

There's already been quite a lot of talk and photo-taking about this latest update. Go here to see some screenshots of this in action. SOTC looks a good deal better, as does FFXII.

Nero MediaHome to stream an AVI file to my Playstation 3 with fw 1.8

Quote:
Steps to get Nero MediaHome Running
-------------------------------------------------

Note: This guide pertains to Nero Ultra Edition 7, build 7.8.5.0. All other subsequent versions or previous versions may differ and may not offer the exact same features/menus.

1. Purchase/Obtain a copy of Nero Ultra Edition 7

2. Install Nero Ultra Edition 7 using Typical settings, if you choose not to include all the applications, make sure you at least have all the media-related applications (transcoders, streamers, MediaHome, Scout).

3. Nero MediaHome and Nero Scout are MUST INSTALLS.

4. Once the installation is complete run Nero Scout.

5. In Nero scout, select the folders you wish to share on Nero MediaHome, once selected, make sure to hit Index Now from the Indexing menu.

6. Once the indexing is complete, run Nero MediaHome.

7. Check to see if the shared directories are OK.

8. Options can be changed to your liking.

9. Network: Check the network interface which you computer and Playstation 3 belong to.

10. Devices: Make sure your Playstation 3(UPnP/1.0) is turned on, and that it has Allow Access shaded off. (It means it's allowed)

11. Transcoding: No changes needed.

12. Click on Start Server

13. Browse your media from your Playstation 3 and Enjoy!

G.A.P. is Gamer Advisory Panel, which is like a "VIP" group of play underground members that have access to more and exclusives content. When you log in on the playstation website you should see the GAP icon under your name, click on it and you'll be in the gap section.

and yes I got the same e-mail no beta for home and no beta for warhawk for me

Hey guys, I don't think I gonna read all the posts in this thread (lol), but I have a question: Is it true that some (or maybe all?) PS2 games run in HD resolution after the latest update?

You only had to read the last five posts, but yeah, DVDs, PSX and PS2 games can be upscaled up to 1080p.

That upscaling feature is pretty sweet, and really the only way I could ever hope to reasonably play all my PSX games on HDTV (eventually you won't even be able to buy an SDTV, just like CRT computer monitors are hard to find). This makes eventually getting a PS3 a more attractive proposition.

Yeah, from what I have read on other message boards, the upscaling feature must be pretty awesome. Now I just hope that Sony's going to improve backwards compatibility for us Europeans

This update was almost pointless. The PS1 games did need the upscaling to make them look decent on newer TVs. However as far as the PS2 games go, most TVs already have screen ratio and zooming abilities, so the stretch feature isn't even needed, and the 1080p stuff hasn't been much of an improvement. I would have been way more excited if they had added 16:9 formatting.

I never said that there was No improvement, I just said that there wasn't anything that huge for all the hype this was getting before release. Sure the 1080 image looks great, but when you're sitting 5 feet or more from the screen, it's not that huge seeing how PS2 games will never look all that great compared to current games anyway. I'm just saying that I would have rather had the 16:9 rendering more then the 1080p capability. I'm not saying that my opinion is in everyone's best interest, cause it's not. It's simply what I would've wanted.

Well without going into too much technical detail, offering an aspect ratio the engine doesn't originally support is impossible.

Hmmm... I thought as much. The reason why I thought it could be done thouh is because all the supported X-box1 games are upscaled and formatted to 16:9 on the X360. However while just going through my games I remembered that there were games that didn't have 720P support (Phantom Dust) and when I put it in the X360 it came up in 1080 but in 4:3. So I kind of stumbled upon this before your last post there. However someone else out there may have been wondering the same thing that I was earlier, so at the least we have this documented now.

The only Xbox games that are 16:9 on the 360 are the ones that supported it already on the old system.

That's basically what I said in my last post there. Games that already supported 16:9 played in that ratio where games that did not (which wern't many, like Phantom Dust) only play in 4:3 even on the 360.
