"Sounds like a spy movie..."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The year is 2005. On the chain of islands known as the Fox-Acripelago, in a
remote area of Alaska exists Shadow Moses, an island which is the location of
a top-secret nuclear warhead facility. During an excercise involving Armstech
and DARPA, Next-Generation Special Forces, led by members of unit FOX-HOUND,
invade the base, and take control. In control, the terroist leader makes the
demands. They want the remains of the greatest soldier of the 20th century, Big
Boss, and one billions dollars. They state if their demands are not met within
24 hours, they will launch a nuclear weapon.
Secretary of Defense, Jim Houseman, calls upon retired FOX-HOUND commander, and
the main character of this game, Colonel Roy "Chicken Fox" Campbell, to deal
with the situation. In turn, Roy takes it upon himself to bring the legendary
Solid Snake out of retirement. After being taken from his home by armed
soldiers, Snake is taken into a submarine, near the site of the incident. Here,
Snake meets with Roy and Dr. Naomi Hunter, FOX-HOUND's chief medical officer.
Naomi gives Snake an injection of nanomachines while Roy briefs Snake on the
events and Snake's two objectives: He is to rescue DARPA Chief Donald Anderson,
and ArmsTech president Kenneth Baker, and he is to find out whether or not the
terroists have the ability to launch a nuclear weapon.
While Snake is virtually a one-man army for this mission, he does have support.
Roy and Naomi will keep in contact with him via Codec, Mei Ling, a young genius
is in charge of his mission data, Nastasha Romanenko will give him information
on the equipment he finds, as well as the type of nuclear missiles in the base.
Snake also finds out that Campbell is in on the mission because his niece is
being held on Shadow Moses island.
After asking about the injection he was given, Naomi explains to Snake what
exactly nanomachines are. She explains that the injection was a combination of
nanomachines and anti-freezing peptites. The peptites stop his blood from
freezing, and the nanomachines work in the bloodstream to replace adrenaline,
sugar, and nutrition, so Snake will not have to worry about food. The nano-
machines also keep the Codec batteries functioning.
Campbell also explains to Snake that the Next Generation Special Forces aren't
just your average grunts. They're heavily armed, and the six members of FOX-
HOUND are hardened veterans. Evidentally, the Next Gen Special Forces were
involved in the Human Genome Project, and have been strengthened through gene
therapy, more specifically, they have been strengthened through gene therapy
thanks to the "soldier genes" that were found on the remains of legendary
soldier Big Boss, after the fall of Zanzibar. These "soldier genes" are
responsible for making effective soldiers. These Next Gen Special Forces also
were mercenaries from Outer Heaven, and the U.S. government bought out their
contracts and merged them with Force 21. They had no real life experience, and
were basically "video game players".
Snake is finally briefed on unit FOX-HOUND. There are six members participating
in this revolt - Psycho Mantis, the worlds most powerful psychic and
practitioner of telekinesis, Vulcan Raven, a giant and shaman, Sniper Wolf, a
highly trained sniper who can stay in the same position, at the ready, for
days, or even weeks, Decoy Octopus, a master of disguise, Revolver Ocelot, gun-
fighting and interrogation expert, and the leader of the terroists, Liquid
Snake.
Snake is astounded that someone has the same code-name as him. Campbell goes
into some details on Liquid. Liquid joined FOX-HOUND soon after Solid Snake had
retired to Alaska. Campbell shows Snake a picture Liquid, and Snake is
astounded to see that this man has his face.
It took some convincing, but Roy was finally able to get Snake to agree on the
mission. He informs Snake that in this operation, all weapons and equipment are
procure on site. Snake is loaded into a Swimmer Delivery Vehicle, and is sent
into battle. However, before leaving, Snake asks Naomi for some scissors, so he
can cut his hair. He doesn't want to be confused with the terroist leader, now
does he?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A SURVEILANCE CAMERA?!?1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a rough time in the SDV, Snake arrives in the lower dock of Shadow Moses,
and surfaces just in time to hear Liquid Snake warn the Genome Soldiers
patrolling the area, that "he" will be through the area. Liquid then heads to
ground level, via freight elevator. After surfacing and making initial contact
with Roy, Snake himself makes it into the freight elevator, and proceeds with
his mission. Upon arriving at ground level, Snake is briefed on the area and
his suit by Campbell and Naomi. He is also introduced to Mei Ling, the creator
of the Soliton Radar System, which Snake is using. Liquid also takes off in a
Russian Hind-D to "swat down some bothersome flies".
Yadda, yadda, yadda, Snake manages to get into the Tank Hangar and make his way
through the base. He reaches the DARPA Chief's cell by crawling through the
ventilation shaft. The Chief confirms that the terroists can launch a nuke, and
he also reveals that Shadow Moses is actually the site where a new Metal Gear
is being developed.
"Metal Gear?!?! It can't be" Snake says, clearly surprised.
The weapon is a new version of Metal Gear, codenamed REX. It can launch a nuke
from anywhere on the globe. Now Snake's got another thing to worry about...
Before dying of a "heart attack" the Chief tells Snake about the PAL system
necessary to override the launch system. Snake shrugs it off, and soon hears
some commotion coming from outside of his cell. His cell door soon opens and
Snake finds himself face to face with a rookie in a guard's outfit. How can he
tell she's a rookie? Simple.
"Is this the first time you ever pointed a gun at a person? Your hands are
shaking.", Snake taunts, to which the girl responds with:
"Careful, I'm no rookie!!"
Snake continues his taunting, "Liar! That nervous glance...that scared look in
your eyes. They're rookie's eyes if I ever saw them. You've never shot a
person, am I right? You haven't even taken the safety off, rookie."
That Snake is a bastard...just like my uncle said.
Anyways, Snake and the girl fight off some guards, and the girl manages to run
away. Snake follows after her, but is greeted with a lovely hallucination
thanks to Psycho Mantis, and is shot at by the girl. Snake heads down to the
B2, and after using C4 to blow up some wall, he finds Armstech president,
Kenneth Baker tied to the central pillar. However, upon closer inspection,
Snake finds that he is tied to the pillar with wires that are attached to C4
explosives. Suddenly, a shot rings out, and Snake with his quick reflexes,
backflips to dodge it.
"Right, touch that wire and the C4 will blow up along with the old man." a
hoarse voice states, "So you're the one that the boss keeps talking about."
"And you?" Snake replies.
"Special Operations FOX-Hound"
He then twirls his revolver some.
"Revolver-"
He twirls some more. And more. And he does this for like, ten minutes, finally
he stops.
"Ocelot. I've been waiting for you, Solid Snake. Now let's see if the man can
live up to the legend."
Ocelot then rants about his Colt Single Action Army, gets in a gun duel with
Snake, and a suddenly gets his hand chopped off.
"WHAT?! MY HAND! AUGH!" Ocelot screams.
The blade-wielder makes himself visible, turning off the stealth camouflage
that he had on. Ocelot, scared as a little kitty, runs, saying that he and
Snake will meet again. Baker makes note of the stealth camouflage, and Snake
asks who this person is. He appears to be a cyborg ninja of sorts. Of course,
the ninja's answer of "I am like you, I have no name" isn't very helpful. The
Ninja freaks out, fights Snake, then flees. Snake asks Baker if he is alright,
and learns some new information. Evidentally, a young female soldier has the
three card keys, Baker gave them to her. Snake is told to contact Meryl, but
when he asks for her codec frequency, Baker forgets. Bastard. He says it's on
the back of the "package" (Third wall go bye bye...). Snake's also told to find
find Hal Emmerich, chief engineer of REX. Baker then goes on a twenty minute
rant about REX and nuclear arms. I'm serious. It's that goddamn long.
Eventually, Baker dies of yet another "heart attack" (as diagnosed by Roy and
Naomi). I must say, if he hadn't died there, I would have killed him.
Anyways, Snake contacts Meryl, and gets her to open the Tank Hangar door, which
allows him to get to the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building. However, on his way
there, he is attacked by Vulcan Raven who happens to be in a tank. Very fair.
However, since Snake is just so cool, he tosses some grenades into the tank,
blowing it up. Snake moves on. Raven makes fun of Ocelot for losing his hand to
the ninja. Liquid warns both Raven and Ocelot not to underestimate Snake. He's
quite dangerous to them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey...you're that NINJA!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Snake manages to get to the nuclear storage building. On the B2, after using a
Nikita missile to delectrify an electric floor, Snake makes his way to Hal
Emmerich's lab. However, outside of the lab, Snake watches in shock as the
Cyborg Ninja massacres a group of guards. The Ninja enters the lab, and Snake
is forced to walk among the bodies as he makes his way to it.
Inside, he finds the Ninja threatening Emmerich. The Ninja asks where his
friend is, but all the frightened Emmerich can do is wet his pants. Snake makes
his presence known, saying "Hey...you're that Ninja". Yeah. Seriously. He says
that. Snake and the Ninja do battle, while Emmerich hides in the closet. The
Ninja makes Snake use just his hands, for he believes it's foolish to use a
weapon (Hey Ninja, a sword is a weapon, you know?). Snake still manages to
beat the Ninja, who promptly freaks out and cuts up everything in the room.
Snake then comes to the realization that the Ninja is none other than his old
friend and war-buddy Grey Fox. He turns to the Colonel and Naomi for an
explanation, and Naomi reveals that after being killed in Zanzabar Land, Fox
was revived, and fitted with the exoskeleton.
Snake makes Emmerich leave the locker he was hiding in. Like with Baker, we are
once again treated to a series of long and boring scenes, explaining REX and
it's weapons, the PAL cards, and his love of Japanese Anime. From this point,
he is called 'Otacon', which stands for Otaku Convention. He also reveales that
he had sex with his step-mother...wait, that's in the next game...
He goes on to mention nuclear weapons are in his blood, and how much he wants
to build a robot. Suspicious because of what happened to Baker and the DARPA
Chief, Snake asks Otacon if he's okay, and shakes him up a little. Then Otacon
turns on his stealth camouflage, and provides radio backup for Snake for the
rest of the game.
The game moves on, Snake meets Meryl, and fights and defeats Psycho Mantis.
Mantis moves a bookcase blocking a door with his last ounce of strength, so
Meryl and Snake. Before they leave the room, Meryl buggers Snake some more.
Asking him about his name, where he came from, and if there's anyone he likes.
Meryl: Snake...can I ask you something?
Snake: What?
Meryl: I was just wondering...
Snake: What? Whats the problem now?
Meryl: Oh oh nothing...so tell me Snake. Whats your name. Your real name
Snake: A name means nothing on the battlefield. After a week, no one has a
name.
Meryl: How old are you?
Snake: Old enough to know what death looks like
Meryl: Any family?
Snake: No, but I was raised by many people.
Meryl: Is there anybody you like?
Snake: I've never been interested in anyone elses life...
Meryl: So you are all alone. Just like Mantis said...
Snake: Other people just complicate my life! I don't like to get involved
Meryl: Your a sad, lonely man...
Mind your own damn business, you squeaky voiced wench!
Anyways, Snake and Meryl move on through a cavern full of wolf-dogs, and
eventually they reach the communication's towers. However, Snake notices a red
laser on Meryl. Rather than point it out to her immediatly, he takes a moment
to stare at her large behind (One which would make Jill Valentine and Claire
Redfield jealous). Meryl gets shot, and Campbell yells at Snake to get a sniper
rifle to do battle with the sniper, who is obviously Sniper Wolf. Snake back-
tracks and gets a rifle. He is able to defeat Wolf, or so it seems. As he
approaches the towers, three guards and Sniper Wolf ambush him. He is knocked
unconscious, and as the screen fades we hear Liquid's voice...
"Don't kill him yet...I want him alive."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't use Auto-Fire...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Snake awakes on a large metallic bed, with his limbs shackled. The bed rotates
and Snake finds himself look straight at the face of Liquid Snake. According
to Liquid, Snake stole was was rightfully his birthright. He always knew they
would meet, and now they finally do. The brother of light...and the brother of
dark. Liquid wants to have some of Snake's DNA taken and used to correct the
Genome Soldiers mutations (mutations? Maybe that's why they're so dumb), but
not to cure them. They can't cure them without Big Boss' DNA. Liquid tells
Snake they both of them are the last surviving sons of Big Boss. Liquid then
ignores Snake and talks to Ocelot and Wolf about the Ninja, but he then leaves
after receiving a call from Raven.
Wolf kisses and rubs against Snake, and Ocelot being the old pervert he is
whistles, laughs, and leans his head in as if asking for a kiss as well. After
Wolf leaves, Snake and Ocelot have a short chat, before Ocelot explains the
device Snake is hooked up to. He also explains the rules of this game they are
playing, and tells Snake not to use auto-fire, or he'll know. There goes the
fourth wall... He runs electricity through Snake's body, saying that if Snake
submits, he'll kill Meryl. Snake manages to resist Ocelot's tortures three
times to save Meryl's life. Snake is dragged to a cell.
Snake find the DARPA Chief's body in his cell, already decaying. But the Chief
died a few hours ago. He wouldn't be decaying that fast...
Snake contacts the Colonel and Naomi and tells them about the Chief's body. We
also learn some stuff about Naomi that I won't address here because it plays no
large part at the moment, and this is a summary. Not a long-ary. Snake also
talks about his friends, Roy Campbell and Frank Jaeger, aka Grey Fox. He goes
on to mention a little about his father, Big Boss. Snake contacts Otacon,
asking him to help him escape. Otacon comes and gives Snake some Ketchup and a
Ration, and asks him not to kill Sniper Wolf because, and get ready for this:
"She likes dogs. She must be a good person."
Yeah. That's what he said. Snake smacks him (I wish), and then escapes using
Ketchup. Snake makes his way back to the communication's tower. He climbs up
the tower, fighting guards along the way. Upon reachin the roof, he is attacked
by Liquid in the Hind-D. Snake rapells down and enters the second communication
tower. He meets Otacon here, then ascends the tower to the roof, where, using
only a Stinger Missile Launcher, he is able to blow up the Hind-D, and Liquid.
Snake climbs back down the tower, and takes the elevator to the bottom floor.
He is ambushed by four guards in stealth camouflage, but he is able to over-
come. He exits the communication's tower and enters a snow field. Here, he is
yet again attacked by Sniper Wolf.
After a grueling sniper battle in the snow, Snake overcomes Wolf, and
approaches where he shot her down. Wolf is lying in the snow, bleeding from a
wound in her chest. She's nearly dead, and uses her remaining energy to speak
to Snake.
Wolf: I...I've......waited for this moment...I am a sniper. Waiting is my
job...Never moving a muscle...concentrating...I am lung-shot. Y...you cannot
save me. Please...Just finish me quick. I am a Kurd. I have always dreamed of
a peaceful place like this...
Snake: A Kurd? So that's why you're called Wolf...
Wolf: I was born on a battlefield. Raised on a battlefield. Gunfire, sirens and
screams...they were my lullabies...Hunted like dogs day after day...driven from
our ragged shelters...That...was my life. Each morning, I'd wake up...and find
and find a few more of my family or friends dead beside me. I'd stare at the
morning sun...and pray to make it through the day. The governments of the world
turned a blind eye to our misery.
Wolf: But then...he appeared. My hero...Saladin...he took me away from all
that...
Snake: Saladin?...You mean Big Boss?
Sniper: I became a sniper...hidden, watching everything through a rifle's
scope. Now I could see war, not from the inside, but from the outside...as an
observer...I watched the brutality...the stupidity of mankind through the
scope of my rifle. I joined this group of revolutionaries...to take my revenge
on the world. But...I have shamed myself and my people. I am no longer the
wolf I was born to be...In the name of vengeance, I sold my body and my soul.
and my soul. Now...I am nothing more than a dog.
Snake: Wolves are noble animals. They're not like dogs. In Yupik, the word for
wolf is "Kegluneq", and the Aleuts revere them as honorable cousins. They call
mercenaries like us "Dogs of War". It's true, we're all for sale at some price
or another. But you're different...untamed...solitary. You're no dog...You're
a wolf.
Wolf: Who...are you?...Are you...Saladin?
Snake: Wolf...you spared Meryl's life.
Wolf: She...She was never my real target... I don't kill for sport.
Snake: Rest easy. You'll die as the proud wolf you are.
Wolf: I finally understand. I wasn't waiting to kill people...I was waiting for
someone to kill me...A man like you...You're a hero. Please...set me free...
Snake points his SOCOM at her head, ready to kill her, but as he does, foot-
steps can be heard coming towards them, and out of nowhere Otacon appears,
turning off his stealth camouflage. Wolf makes one more request, asking for her
rifle. Otacon gives it to her and she hugs it against her chest. Her wolfs
gather around.
Wolf: This gun is part of me...
Wolf: Everyone is here now. Okay hero...set me free...
Otacon turns his back, not able to see his love die. Snake puts the gun back to
her head.
Otacon: Goodbye...Wolf...
Snake pulls the trigger and the gunshot echoes throughout the snow field. Snake
then places her handkerchief, which he received earlier, over her face,
covering the wound. The wolves' howls can be heard in the night sky.
Otacon: Why are you returning it?
Snake: Because I don't have anymore tears to shed...
Otacon begins to sob, but Snake quickly snaps him out of it. Otacon wants to
help Snake, so Snake tells him to find a place to hide and stay in touch. As
Snake walks away, Otacon yells out, "Snake! What was Wolf fighting for? What
are the terrorist's fighting for? Whatare we fighting for?". Snake stops, and
says "If we make it through this, I'll tell you!". Smake walks into the
entrance of the underground base, and Otacon turns on his stealth unit and
runs back to the towers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"HERE, SNAKE, HAVE A NICE ANNOYING PUZZLE!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Snake makes his way through the underground base and finds himself in a blast
furnace. Carefully sneaking through there, Snake heads down two freight
elevators. As he does, he receives a CODEC call from Master Miller,
concerning Naomi. Miller believes she's a spy! Apparently, some of the things
she said earlier don't add up. Miller tells Snake this to keep him aware, but
then disappears to find out more.
It's about this time that the elevator convienantly reaches a freezer-esque
area. In this area, Snake fights Vulcan Raven, a giant who runs around carrying
a vulcan cannon. After several minutes of battling, Snake comes out on top. As
Raven leans againt the wall, dying, he tells Snake a secret. That the man he
saw die in the cell was not really the DARPA Chief, it was a member of
FOXHOUND, Decoy Octopus. Snake asks for more information, but that is the end
of Raven's hint. He tells Snake that he'll be watching him, and as Snake walks
away, Raven is devoured by his ravens, not leaving a piece.
Snake moves onward, and finds himself in the Metal Gear hangar. Miller contacts
Snake again, but before Snake can switch the monitor off, Roy hears that it's
about Naomi. Miller tells Roy the dastardly truth, Naomi is most likely a spy,
sent to sabotage the mission. Campbell says he'll have her questioned.
As Snake climbs up, to the top level of the Metal Gear hangar, Otacon contacts
him and tells him a shocker. REX will be using a new kind of nuclear warhead,
that is fired from it's railgun like a projectile. It doesn't use fuel, so it
isn't considered a missile, and it can't be detected on radar. OH NOES.
Snake finds a room, and sees Ocelot and Liquid talking in it. Hiding, he
listens in on their conversation. Apparently, America has given no response to
the demands, so they're going to launch a nuke. Liquid changes the target to
Lopnor, China, because he doesn't want to upset Ocelot and Gurlukovich (it's
their homeland, after all), because nuking a population like they were going to
would end the game. Lopnor is a nuclear test site, so it can still be covered
up. Washington would be worried about the counter-strike, which would mean
some top-secret talks between the nation's leaders, where America would have to
reveal the existence of Metal Gear REX. It would also mean a breach of the
Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which would leave America's reputation in ruins,
plus several other nations would contact Liquid and Ocelot, wanting to buy
REX. Launching a nuke at Lopnor will ensure the President gives into their
demands - Big Boss' DNA and 1 billion dollars. Liquid reveals the money will
be used to cure the Genome Soldiers. He also says he's including a FoxDie
vaccine on the list of demands.
"Once we have the money, and Big Boss' DNA, the world will be ours!" Liquid
says. He has no interest in the revival of Mother Russian. He wants to revive
Big Boss' dream. "From today, ...call this place "Outer Heaven".
At this point, Snake is contacted by Otacon. Otacon informs Snake that he
already has the three keys. The one key Snake has changes shape based on
temperature. All he has to do is put it in three times, once at room
temperature, once at freezing, and once at hot. At this, Ocelot sees Snake
holding the PAL card, and he pulls out his revolver and shoots it out of
Snake's hand. The card falls below, into a drainage ditch.
Snake is forced to collect the card, walking through the hazardous waste and
water in the ditch to find it. Once he does, he makes his way back up to the
room. He finds that Ocelot and Liquid are no longer here. He uses the key at
room temperature, then he goes to where he fought Raven to cool it down, then
goes back and uses it at freezing. As he makes his way to the Blast Furnace to
warm the card up, he receives a call from Master Miller. Miller tells him about
FoxDie, an assasination weapon. It's a virus that targets and kills specific
people. It mimics a heart attack, and this is what killed Decoy Octopus and
the ArmsTech President. Naomi was the one behind the project, and the one who
injected into Snake. She put it in with the naomachines.
Snake calls Campbell and asks him what's new Naomi. Campbell reveals that he
had just placed her under arrest because she was sending coded messages to
Shadow Moses. Miller mentions the virus and how one must be around somewhere,
but Snake says all he can do is leave it up to the colonel.
Snake heats the card up in the blast furnace, and heads back to the command
room to input the card and stop the launch. However, as he gets close to the
command room, he receives a call from Naomi. She's using a hidden CODEC. Naomi
admits that she did infect Snake with FoxDie, but it was to get back at him
because he killed her 'big brother' Gray Fox. Gray Fox found her when she was
just a child, dying from starvation. He shared his rations with her, and took
her with him. Solid Snake was the man who took her only family away, and FoxDie
was her way of revenge. Naomi begins to say something else, but she is ambushed
by Campbell and some guards. Campbell tells Snake that he can't let Naomi make
anymore transmissions, she's been taken out of this mission. Snake, enraged,
accuses Roy of double-crossing him, and he demands to know what Naomi said
about FoxDie being part of the operation. Roy ignores this, and tells Snake
he must stop Metal Gear.
Snake heads back to the command room, and enters the key again. However,
instead of disabling the nuke, a computer voice announces that the detonation
code has been activated. As Snake becomes angry, Miller contacts him again.
He thanks Snake, saying nothing can stop Metal Gear now. Miller says that "we"
couldn't learn the DARPA Chief's detonation code, so "they" were not able to
launch. That's when "they" decided to use Snake, stringing him along like a
puppet, until he used the PAL keys, thinking he'd stop the launch.
Roy interrupts, saying that the man Snake is talking to is not Master Miller.
Miller was just discovered in his house, and he's been dead for three days.
Mei-Ling had discovered that "Miller's" CODEC line was coming from inside the
base. Snake asks who it really is, but before Campbell can answer, "Miller"
says in an English voice "Me...dear brother." Liquid tells Snake to come find
him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A CORNERED FOX IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN A FLY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Snake leaves the room, and catches up to Liquid, who is standing next to Metal
Gear's cockpit. Liquid gives a short speech about Snake being just a pawn, and
that he and Snake are twins, linked by curse genes. They were cloned from Big
Boss, during the Les Enfant Terribles project. Solid's fine, he got all the
dominant genes, but Liquid got the flawed recessive genes. Liquid thinks Snake
took away his birthright, Liquid wanted to kill Big Boss. Now, by accomplishing
his dream, Liquid will surpass him, he will destroy him! Liquid jumps into REX
and Metal Gear becomes fully activated.
With his Stinger missile launcher, Snake fires at REX's radome several times.
After several missiles connect with the radome, the large machine shakes, and
comes to a halt. It's still for a few moments, but it regains it's feet and
begins to stomp towards Snake. The foot of REX hoevers over Snake, and just
as it's about to crush him, a figure appears, holding up the foot. Gray Fox,
holding up the staggering weight, tells Snake to run. Snake escapes from under
the foot, and Fox uses the weight to spring himself into the air, where he
does a series of flips and jumps, firing plasma from a cannon on his arm at
REX's radome. He then jumps behind a large crate where Snake is hiding.
"I'm a prisoner of death. Only you can set me free!" Fox says to Snake. He
also tells Snake that he is the one who killed Naomi's parents. He was supposed
to kill her, too, but he couldn't, so he took her with him. He asks Snake to
tell her that he was the one who did it. Suddenly, Liquid finds them. He fires
at them with the machine gun, Fox runs from behind it, drawing Liquid's
attention. Fox, his sword in one hand, a plasma cannon in the other, runs
towards REX. He fires at the radome several times, before jumping into the air.
While he is in the air, Liquid makes REX fire off a laser beam of sorts, and it
cuts off Fox's arm. His arm, and his sword, fall to the ground. Fox lands on a
ledge, and as he is about to shoot, Liquid slams the cockpit of REX into Fox,
pinning him to the wall.
"In the Middle East, we don't hunt foxes, we hunt jackals!" Liquid taunts. With
a burst of energy, Fox raises his arm and fires several plasma blasts at the
radome, yelling out "A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal!". He
destroys the radome. Liquid can no longer see, he has to open the cockpit to
see. Fox falls to the ground, weak. "Impressive!" Liquid yells. "You are indeed
worthy of the codename Fox." Liquid makes REX take a step on Fox, and as his
exo-skeleton slowly begins to break, he yells out his final words, talking to
Snake. "Snake...we're not tool's of the government or anyone else. Fighting
was the only thing...the only thing I was good at. But atleast...I always
fought for what I believed in. Snake...farewell..." His exo-skelton is crushed
and the man known as Gray Fox dies.
"You see, Snake!" Liquid taunts. "You can't protect anyone! Not even your
friends!" Filled with anger, Snake raises the Stinger missile launcher and
fires a final missile, straight into REX's cockpit. REX begins to explode, as
Liquid screams. It topples over, slamming into the wall. The explosion knocks
Snake backwards, and just before he loses consciousness, he sees Liquid slowly
walking towards him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Never trust a Frenchman...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Snake wakes up on Metal Gear REX. Liquid gives a long ass speech about how they
were cloned (Super Baby Method), the value of a soldier, and Snake's purpose.
To go in depth of all of what he says would take a long time. Snake calls
Campbell, who has been taken out of power by the Secretary of Defense. Two
jets are on their way to Shadow Moses to bomb the place, destroying Metal Gear,
Snake and Liquid, and the Genome Soldiers.
Liquid challenges Snake to a hand-to-hand fight, and steps away from where he
was standing. Snake sees Meryl, and Liquid tells him that she is alive. If
Snake can beat Liquid, he and Meryl could attempt to get out in time. Liquid
unties Snake. He says only Snake's death can satisfy him now.
The two brothers battle. In a purely hand-to-hand fight, they assault each on
top of Metal Gear REX. The way they fight is almost artistic, as if they both
know what the other will do, perhaps a bond they share as brothers. But in the
end, Snake manages to overcome Liquid, and knock him off REX, to the abyss
below.
Snake unties Meryl as she awakens. She says that she didn't submit to the
torture, that knowing that Snake didn't submit gave her strength, despite her
fears. Fighting it like he did made her feel closer to Snake. The single hope
she had through the torture, the pain, was that she would see Snake again.
Snake and Meryl carefully climb down REX. Snake contacts Otacon to let him
know that Meryl is okay. He also informs Otacon that the complex is going to
be bombed, and they have to evacuate. Otacon informs Snake that he staying.
He's the only one who can take care of security to make sure Snake and Meryl
make it out all right. Otacon says he's a complete person now. He doesn't have
to worry about his past anymore. Snake thanks Otacon, who seems flattered.
Snake and Meryl escape the hangar as a chunk of metal collapses in front of
the door. They enter a parking garage.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Man that Wouldn't Give Up...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soldiers ambush Snake and Meryl in the parking garage. Snake holds them off
while Meryl starts up a jeep. Snake climbs aboard gets behind a gun turret.
They drive through a tunnel, Snake gunning enemies out of the way as they go.
As they are getting closer to the exit, an English voice calls out. Liquid
drives up behind them, shooting at Snake and Meryl. Snake returns fire, but
as the two jeeps reach the exit, Liquid swerves his vehicle in front of
theirs'. They crash. Snake and Meryl's is upside down, but they manage to make
it to their feet. Liquid's is tipped over, and as Snake begins walking towards
it, Liquid comes out from behind it. He has cuts all over, and his left eye is
bleeding severly.
He walks towards Snake, and points the gun at him. As he's about to pull the
pull the trigger, he feels it. "Fox..." he yells out, trailing off, but Snake
finishes, "Die." Liquid convulses mildly before collapsing. He is dead. As
Snake and Meryl begin to walk away, they notice that the air raid hasn't begun.
Campbell calls him by CODEC, and tells Snake that the Secretary of Defense has
been arrested. The air raid was cancelled by the President himself, and
Campbell was reinstated control of the mission. Campbell is overjoyed when he
hears that Meryl is okay, and he also apologizes to Snake for keeping so many
secrets from him. Campbell tells Snake that Mei-Ling found a snowmobile nearby,
with satellite photos. It should be good for Snake and Meryl to escape with.
Snake asks Campbell to get Otacon out of there, and he also asks to speak to
Naomi.
Naomi: Snake, it's me...
Snake: Naomi...
Naomi: I heard...about my brother...
Snake: I'm sorry... but he had one last message he wanted to say to you.
He told me to tell you to forget about him and to go on with your
own life.
Naomi: Frankie said that?
Snake: Yeah. He also said he'll always love you... Naomi, your brother
just saved you, me and the whole world. He fought with every ounce
of strength in his body.
Naomi: Maybe... maybe now he's finally found some peace. He wasn't really
my brother anymore... Ever since he fought with you in Zanzibar
he's been like a ghost. A ghost looking for a place to die...
Snake: Naomi, Liquid died from Fox Die too. What about me? When am I
gonna go?
Naomi: That's up to you.
Snake: What do you mean?
Naomi: Everybody dies when their time's up...
Snake: Yeah, so when's mine up?
Naomi: It's up to you how you use the time left to you. Live, Snake.
That's all I can say to you.
Snake: ..........
Naomi: Each person is born with their fate written into their own genetic
code... it's unchangeable, immutable... But that's not all there
is to life. I finally realized that. I told you before. The reason
that I was interested in genes and DNA. Because I wanted to know
who I was... where I came from. I thought that if I analyzed my
DNA I could find out who I was, who my parents were. And I thought
that if I knew that, then I'd know what path I should take in life.
But I was wrong. I didn't find anything. I didn't learn anything.
Just like with the Genome Soldiers... you can input all the genetic
information, but that doesn't make them into the strongest
soldiers. The most we can say about DNA is that it governs a
person's potential strengths... potential destiny. You mustn't
allow yourself to be chained to fate... to be ruled by your genes.
Humans can choose the type of life they want to live.
Snake, whether or not you've been programmed or not isn't
important. The important thing is that you choose life... And then
live! Don't you think, Snake?
Don't worry. I'm going to choose life too. Until today, I've
always looked for a reason to live. But from here on, I'm going to
just live.
Genes exist to pass down our hopes and dreams for the future
through our children. Living is a link to what will come. All life
is tethered to the future. Loving each other, teaching each new
generation... then the world can change. I finally realized it.
The true meaning of life... Thank you, Snake.
Snake and Meryl walk down the hill, and find the snowmobile. Meryl hands
Snake a bandanna, one she found. Snake says to keep it as a reminder. A
reminder of how to live. Now, he wants to live with someone else. Snake places
his hand on Meryl's leg. "Someone like you." he says. Meryl asks Snake where
they're going next.
"David. My name is David..." Snake tells her. She changes her question,
asking Dave where they're going next. He says they're going to look for a new
path in life. And that he knows they'll find it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AFTER THE CREDITS DEALIES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We see Alaskan wildlife. Wolves and bears, and a viewpoint of someone on a dog-
sled. Naomi voices over this part.
Naomi: You mustn’t allowed yourself to be chained to fate... to be ruled
by our genes. Humans can choose the type of life they want to live.
The important thing is that you choose life... And then... live!
Somewhere, Ocelot is talking on the phone...
Ocelot: Yes sir. The entire unit was wiped out. Those two are still alive.
The vector? Yes sir, FoxDie should become activated soon... Right
on schedule.
Yes, sir. I recovered all of Rex's dummy warhead data. ...No, sir.
My cover is intact. Nobody knows who I really am. Yes, the DARPA
Chief knew my identity, but he's been disposed of.
Yes. The inferior one was the winner after all. ...That's right.
Until the very end, Liquid thought he was the inferior one. Yes,
sir. I agree completely. It takes a well-balanced individual...
such as yourself to rule the world. No, sir. No one knows that
you were the third one... Solidus. ...What should I do about the
woman? Yes sir. I'll keep her under surveillance.
Yes. Thank you. Good-bye. Mr. President.
DUNDUNDUN DUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
And here's MGS2: SOL summary:
Spoiler:
A Summary by Turducken (Justin Olsen)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Our boy is right on schedule"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It begins with Snake explaining about a new type of Metal Gear that had come to
his attention. He didn’t trust the intel so much, but it was all they had.
A man walks along the George Washington bridge. He suddenly breaks into a run
and disappears. And we see his distorted image leap off, a bungee cord
attached.
It, of course, is Solid Snake.
He touches down on the tanker, his stealth camo shorting out moments later. He
contacts Otacon, and they discuss how this MG is an amphibious Metal Gear
designed to destroy all other kinds, and it's under Marine jurisdiction. Snake
is to head to the bridge, learn the ship’s destination, then make his way to
the holds and take pictures of this Gear.
Snake is armed with a tranq gun, as the tanker is staffed by U.S. Marines; they
don’t want to kill anyone.
But the Russians do! Damned dirty apes...er, Russians! Snake picks up the sound
of a chopper, and sees EVIL RUSSIANS murdering the Marines like they were
little punkass crabs.
Well, that sucks!
Snake spies a Russian putting on a SILLY HAT and takes a pic to send to Otacon
for a later ID. His mission still has to be completed, even with the increased
threat. Snake sneaks inside.
(Check out Snake’s ass-crack revealing suit!)
Encountering a camera, Otacon tells Snake how to watch our for them. Well,
GAAAHHH-LEE Otacon! Thanks a bunch for explaining how not to get seen by the
camera to Solid Snake, superspy guy! (He does the same thing with the laser-
beams, too. Yeesh!)
Upon reaching the bridge, Snake contacts Otacon again. The crew is, of course,
dead. The ship is heading to the middle of the Atlantic, for combat testing.
A noise interrupts them. A Russian. Outside. Snake goes out to get the drop on
him, but it turns out to be a her. Snake tries to hold her up, but a scout
knife with a surprise nearly hits him. He dodges the shot, and a battle ensues.
With only a tranq gun, Snake perseveres, knocking out the woman. He takes her
USP. A strange flying machine, a cypher, spots him.
Otacon tells Snake who the man from earlier was. The one they were trying to
get an ID on. Sergei Gurlukovich. One of Ocelot’s allies. He and Ocelot are
after the Metal Gear prototype.
Otacon reveals to Snake that he didn’t find out this information, the intel
about the Gear, on his own. He’d received a tip from someone with the initials
E.E. The same initials as Otacon’s step-sister, and her nickname as well. But
he hadn’t seen her in 10 years.
Time to head down to the holds.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone Loves Metal Gear RAY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the ship’s engine room, on route to the holds, Snake is shocked to find the
shadow of Vulcan Raven, but it just turns out to be...a...Vulcan Raven...action
figure. Yeah, I dunno either.
As he neared the holds, guards poured forth. They were not aware of his
presence, but were nearing his position. He had to shoot first. A grueling
firefight began, but Snake overcame them.
A guard starts to pursue Snake, but Ocelot comes and KILLS him. He apparently
means to kill Gurlukovich as well. (Hey, Ocelot has his hand back! Well, not
HIS!)
The Marines in the holds were still alive, oblivious to the Russians on board.
Time to play shuttersnake. But Otacon lets him know someone is listening in on
their transmissions. Not cool.
With roughly 7 minutes until the Commandant finishes his speech, Snake
stealthily reaches this new Gear - Metal Gear RAY. He takes the photos as
required: front, left, right, and a shot of the Marines logo.
The machine he uses to transmit the photos was given a roundabout complicated
explanation of how to do so, ending with more or less "press the action
button." Note that Snake did not question what the blue hell ole Hal was
blabbering about. "Action button?!" he should have barked. But noooo! The
photos are graciously accepted by a character that is only second to Roy
Campbell in awesomosity.
Sprite-acon, As I call him! He’s little! Aw, he’s so cute too! Aw!
So Snake has done this, and Dolph wraps up his little pep talk. But what’s
this? "Gift of the silver tongue," says our old buddy Ocelot. He’s up to
hijinx! HIJINX, I SEZ!!
The Marines get ready to blast him to smithereens, but ole Ocelot ain’t none
too worried, cuz he has his own goon squad. Gurlukovich pops up behind Dolph
and puts a gun to his head while a veritable buttload of Russian commados (the
same ones Snake trounces with ease throughout the Tanker) spring out.
Ocelot also has a trump card. Lots of explosives. Enough to sink the ship
easily. After Dolph inquires what they plan to do with RAY, Sergei rants
about his unhappy childhood and how America sucks.
Ocelot takes this chance to basically tell his buddy Sergei about his case of
CBD. The Patriots come first.
"The La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo?!" chokes Dolph.
Sergei, certain Ocelot is in league with an enigmatic Solidus, shouts
"Damn you!" (the accent, see) and tries to pop him. Ocelot is faster, dropping
both Dolph and Sergei in a second. Then he blasts the crap out of some of the
Russians.
The Marines, being trained Marines, stand around like morons and watch as
Ocelot then sadistically detonates the explosives. About half of everyone runs
like hell to escape. The other half attack Ocelot. They ALL miss. They’re
Marines, and they all miss. But it’s not their fault!
Snake pursues, and Ocelot FREAKS THE HELL OUT. His arm goes snazzy and he
becomes...Liquid Snake?! Uh, all...right... Ocelot tries to fight the Liquid
possession from his mind, but cannot. Liquid criticizes about how horrible he's
aged, and comments:
"A few more years, and you'll be another dead clone of the old man. Our raw
materials are vintage, brother! Big Boss was in his late fifties when they
created his copies!"
OceLiquid makes a jump into RAY that would make a Power Ranger envious. The
Marines are helpless against RAY and Snake is also overcome. From the cockpit
of RAY, Liquid taunts Snake;
"You don't have what it takes after all! You're going down, Snake, with this
tanker!"
Liquid then uses RAY to blow a hole in the wall of the hold, which takes down
Snake, and gives Liquid a quick escape. Snake, still alive, does his best to
get out, and manages to swim to the surfce of the water. However, RAY, which
made it above water and is standing on the remains of the tanker, leaps into
the air, and jumps back into the water. The tidal wave RAY caused crashes into
Snake, submerging him again. As the screen fades, we hear Otacon scream into
the night.
"SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Did you say nerd?"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2 years have passed since the Tanker incident occurred. Its sinking caused the
construction of the...construct...that an operative heads to. We do not know
who this fellow is, but he is referred to as Snake.
But it can’t be Snake...can it? He died...2 years ago...on that tanker...
No, it can’t be. He doesn’t sound like our Snake. His body is more lithe.
Someone else...
Our hero, ROY CAMPBELL, informs this Snake what’s going on. Special Unit Dead
Cell is working with those same naughty Russians from before. They have taken
control of the Big Shell, which is really bad, because the President of the
United States was there at the time.
Oops.
This Snake finds an opening already made in the fence. Another infiltrator?
While he makes his underwater entrance, SEALs are rappelling in via chopper.
They are clueless about this new Snake’s arrival, and are attempting to save
the Prez themselves. Being canno-fodder video game non-playable characters, we
all know they will fail. And hard.
About 5 seconds after the new Snake surfaces, Roy decides to up and change his
codename. Now he’s Raiden, and he will be forever hated (unjustly) by a large
portion of stupid Metal Gear fanboys. Also, his skull suit shows off his very
eye-catching ass crack.
Making his way to the elevator, Raiden is shocked to find every guard in the
elevator has been clobbered. And it seems the attacker is going up the
elevator. Though the assailant has his back turned to Raiden, Raiden still
manages to see a bandanna, ass crack tight sneaking suit, and some combat
boots. Hmm, wonder who it is? It may be obvious to you, but not to Raiden, and
he has no time to think about it, either. He must continue the mission.
After Raiden accesses the node (not nerd, node) the guards begin to wake up.
They don’t prove to be much of a problem for Raiden either, and he hops on the
elevator soon after. He now has to deal with his meddlesome girlfriend, Rose,
who is oddly involved in the operation as it’s data analyst.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Knife To Meet You
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A shocking piece of info is revealed to Raiden through Roy. The leader of these
enemies is none other than Solid Snake! But he can't be the real Solid Snake.
The real Solid Snake died two years ago, on that tanker when he blew it sky-
high.
Raiden is told to head to Strut B, while he's currently on A. Apparently, the
President is on Strut B, and Raiden must save him. B, being the next letter
after A, is logically a nearby strut. He must "USE THE HANGING MODE!" to reach
it. He doesn’t have to, but Roy tells him too, and since we lovez Roy so much,
we do it anyway.
Creeping about Strut B, Raiden is not seeing a good sight. Blood...lots of
blood. And screams. And gunshots. Then...silence.
Raiden bravely enters this room where the sounds of countless SEAL deaths
emanated from. He spots the attacker and murderer of the SEALs drinking the
blood of a SEAL, but Raiden doesn't have any lethal weapons to take the thing
on with. The agile knife-wielder springs over Raiden, behind him. The boy has
no idea of the danger behind him...
But he’s rescued by another SEAL. This man fires on the ‘vamp’ moments before
he would have killed Raiden, without Raiden even knowing what happened. As it
stands, the knife man is now springing about again, so the SEAL loses track of
him.
Until Knifey McKnifington hops down and disarms him, and slams him against a
wall. Golly, that SEAL’s voice sounds fer-mill-yer...
Raiden grabs the SEAL’s weapon and opens fire to no avail, but at least he
returned the life-saving favor. As the man is about to make short work of both
Raiden and this remaining SEAL, a radio transmission stops him from doing so.
Evidentally, the attackers name is Vamp, and he has something important to tell
this "queen" about your new SEAL buddy. Vamp flees, and leaves Raiden and the
SEAL there.
The man introduces himself as Pliskin, and gives Raiden a SOCOM. Finally, a
real weapon! Woohoo! They chat a bit and it is time to go. But Pliskin is weak
from blood loss, so he needs a few more moments to regain himself.
But a few things were suspicious about this Pliskin fellow. He knew of
FoxHound, nanomachines and he had a sea louse crawl off of him. Hm...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dis game’s da bomb!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After exiting Strut B on his way to Strut C, Raiden is greeted to the sight of
Fortune (she was the "queen" Vamp was talking to) killing a bunch of SEAL guys.
The President is on the ground at her side, and Vamp comes appears and takes
the President inside, Fortune soon follows. Raiden continues, solo, to Strut
C, where he encounters Peter Stillman, bomb disposal guy. But not just any bomb
disposal guy, kid, this is THE bomb disposal guy. Pliskin appears, and Raiden
and Pliskin are told about the situation. Apparently, Dead Cell member Fatman,
who was once Stillman's apprentice of sorts, has placed bombs all over the Big
Shell. Stillman gives Pliskin and Raiden a sensor and some freezy spray, and
briefs them on how to disarm the bombs. Pliskin and Raiden split up, Pliskin
taking care of the Struts on Shell 2, and Raiden taking care of the struts on
Shell 1.
During this bomb disarming mission, Pliskin gives Raiden a rousing speech on
the importance of the cardboard box. It indeed seems, unlike the Genome
Soldiers from MGS1 thought, it is not "just a box".
Pliskin explains very thoroughly:
Pliskin: The cardboard box that you have is ideal for fooling your enemies.
It's a very important tool for infiltration missions. Of course. I
can't begin to count the number of agents whose lives were saved by
a cardboard box... Look. I'm not exaggerating when I say the
success of your mission hinges on how you use that cardboard box.
But in the end, a cardboard box is only made of paper. Handle it
with care or it won't be of much use to you.
In the face of Raiden's confusing over that speech, Pliskin adds:
"Y'know... I've lost a couple thanks to you...Nothing...forget it."
He then continues on, stating:
Pliskin: Treat your cardboard box with care. Take care of the box and it'll
take care of you...Don't think of it as just another box. Treat it
with love...Don't be rough. Okay?"
That...was...bee-you-tee-ful.
Once Raiden freezes the last bomb on Shell 1, he finds out that he needs to
get a new sensor to find a new kind of bomb. Raiden recovers the sensor, and
heads back down to his starting point of the mission and disarms the final
bomb there. However, on the way, Stillman is killed, Pliskin is knocked out,
and most of Shell 2 is destroyed, due to a trap Fatman set with his bombs.
After disarming the final bomb, Raiden heads back to the elevator, to continue
on his mission. However, Fortune attacks him. Fortune is cursed with the
ability to never die, so Raiden's weapons have no effect. He has to resort to
running around, dodging the blasts from her rail gun, as well as the debris
that it hits. Eventually, Raiden is told by Campbell that Fatman is requesting
Raiden should meet him. Raiden needs to get out of there and meet with Fatman!
Fortunately, right after the conversation, Vamp comes down the elevator, saying
he'll take care of Raiden. Raiden fires some shots at Fortune, but two of them
deflect off of her and hit Vamp in the head and stomach. As Fortune cries over
her dead friend, Raiden gets in the elevator and heads to the heliport.
However, Vamp is still alive. How you ask? Vamp answers that for you. "I
already died once. I cannot die twice."
Upon reaching the Heliport, Raiden has to disarm yet another frikkin' bomb.
After doing that, our semi-accented friend Fatman makes his appearance. Fatboy
here doesn't really care about the main plan of Dead Cell. He just likes to
blow things up. The battle starts, and Raiden has to track down and fight
Fatman (who is on rollerblades) as well as disarm bombs placed on the Heliport.
Eventually, the fat guy goes down, and Raiden has to freeze the last bomb,
which is inconspicuously placed under his fat ass. Freezeyness happens. And
away we go.
On his way down, Raiden is attacked by a NINJA!!! Well, not attacked, but it is
a Ninja. Gray Fox? Nah, he’s REX’s foot paste. But then who? Dunno, dude. This
ninja gives Raiden a soldier uniform for a disguise, a card key, and a rather
useless cellphone. Raiden orders a pizza with it straightaway.
Raiden is now to infiltrate the Shell 1 core with the outfit, find Richard Ames
(who has a pacemaker) and secure him. Ames knows where the Prez is. After more
nagging from Rose and Roy (why Roy, why?), Raiden is off again.
He dons the garb, enters the core, gets a directional mic (to hear Ames’
pacemaker) and fools the stupid guards. He finds Ames! Ames then explains the
Prez is safe. But Raiden also listens in on a chat going on between the man
claiming to be Snake, Ocelot, and Olga (no, not a man claiming to be all 3, you
fool!).
Olga and Ocelot begin arguing and it elevates to a near-shootout, but Snake
calms them down. Raiden also takes a moment to point his directional mic to the
restroom facilities West of where these three villains are talking. Apparently,
poor Johnny Sasaki still has that diarrhea. Afterwards, Ocelot comes out and
approaches Raiden! Don’t let your cover be blown, kid!
But it is...and Ocelot is about to whack the kid. Ames died of a "heart attack"
moments ago. Will Raiden die as well? No! Cuz that NINJA saves his bacon! In a
scene very reminiscent of MGS1, the Ninja drops from the ceiling, and attempts
to cut off Ocelot's arm. "You, but you died?!" Ocelot screams. With the Ninja
distracting Ocelot and the guards, Raiden manages to make his escape of the
hostage room. Now, Raiden, sans BDU hood gets the hell outta there! Run,
laddie!
With Shell 1 completely explored, the Prez must be on 2. So with guards on his
ass, he makes his way there.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"NO! That is NOT Solid Snake!!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Raiden reaches the Shells 1 and 2 connecting bridge, but before crossing, he
has to disarm C4 strategically placed on the bridge. After doing so, he is
informed by Pliskin that he (Pliskin) and his buddy "Otacon" have a chopper
now, so they can save the hostages and the Prez. Hooray! But before they can
continue, the terroist leader, Solid Snake, appears! Boo!
Raiden: So you're the boss around here?
Terroist Leader: No, not just around here. I'm the boss to surpass Big Boss
himself! Solid Snake!
Pliskin: No! That is not Solid Snake!
Snake: What a pleasant surprise, brother.
Pliskin: Save it, you're no brother of mine.
Snake: Don't say you've forgotten me, Snake.
Pliskin opens fire on Snake, one of his bullets hitting the C4 strapped to the
connecting bridge. Snake is protected, however, due to his full-body
exoskeleton. "I'm a whole different game from Liquid" Snake shouts, before
showing what his suit can do. Snake's muscles grow inside the exoskeleton.
Around this time, it's revealed that this older-looking Snake is actually
Solidus Snake.
Solidus hops into a jet piloted by Vamp, and Pliskin...Aw screw it. You already
know by now. Solid Snake throws Raiden a Stinger Missile launcher, and Raiden
uses it to stop that harrier. Unfortunately, Metal Gear RAY leaps from deep
underneath the ocean, and saves the jet before it falls. Afterwards, Pliskin
reveals to Raiden that he is in fact THE Solid Snake (so obvious...). Otacon
tagged along to save his sister (E.E, remember?) and help Snake. Now to save
them all! But...Snake and Otty gotta fix their chopper. Raiden must go solo
again.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At least he’s not Dubya
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Boom, Raiden has to traverse the dilapidated connecting bridge, get inside
Shell 2 core, and find the Prez. He does, but the jerk’s holed up behind an
electrical floor! Raiden must collect a Nikita Missile Launcher, after
listening to Olga drone on and on to Solidus over the radio. Raiden eventually
takes out the circuit box so he can cross the electrical floor.
Once they meet up, Johnson grabs Raiden’s crotch. Well, I never! My stars!
Then, Johnson explains to Raiden a little somethin' about politics. Namely,
the people who control it. The Patriots. Johnson says he is just a figurehead,
then goes into more detail on them. Basically, Johnson says this about them:
The real power lies in the Patriots hands. The government is just a
stage play. Who are they? Even I don't know. My orders come from a cutout.
All I've heard is that every key decision is made by a group of 12 men
known as the Wisemen's Committee.
He also goes on to talk about Solidus Snake.
Johnson: My predecessor... George Sears. That was the name the public came
to know him by. But I knew him by his codename, "Solidus Snake."
He was the third Snake, preceded by Solid and Liquid... a
survivor of the Les Enfants Terrible project. Neither Solid nor
Liquid, he was a well-balanced masterpiece that the Patriots saw
fit to entrust with the Presidency. However, he fell out of grace
with the organization four years ago when, acting on his own, he
started an incident.
So it seems, despite his ruggity-old good looks, Solidus is actually the
younger of the three. Johnson goes on to say this about the "incident" (Shadow
Moses):
Johnson: Yes, that's right. At the time, the DARPA Chief, Donald Anderson,
together with certain influential parties, initiated the
development of Metal Gear REX and an advanced nuclear warhead.
However, this did not fall in line with the Patriots' plans.
What's more, Solidus decided on his own to send his most trusted
man, Ocelot, to provoke Liquid Snake, bringing about the said
incident. As a result, he succeeded in obtaining REX and the
data on the warhead. But in doing so, he ended up revealing the
existence... of both REX and the Genome army, a blunder that
earned him the wrath of the Patriots. Shortly thereafter, Solidus
was removed from the Presidential Office.
He also goes on to mention that with the help of Ocelot, Solidus was able to
go into hiding underground. During that time, The Patriots selected their new
pawn, James Johnson. It's also revealed that Metal Gear REX, the one Raiden
saw moments ago, is NOT the new Metal Gear project. The new Metal Gear project
in the Big Shell. More specifically, the upper structure of the Big Shell is
simply a camouflage design for the massive main structure that is Arsenal Gear.
How massive is it, you ask? It goes all the way to the ocean floor. DAYUM.
Even more, Arsenal is loaded with a payload of missiles, including nuclear
warheads, and it's protected by a horde of mass-produced Metal Gear RAY units.
Double DAYUM. Sounds like a bitchin' weapon, right?
Johnson: Weapon? No. You're not seeing the full picture.
Basically, Johnson says this about Arsenal's true purpose and it's AI, GW:
The Patriots fear the flow of digital information. GW is the key to their
supremacy. It will give them a new power to wield in the next century. It
will control the digital age, and it has full access to the US military
network. Arsenal Gear is a veritable fortress, protected by mass produced
Ray units. Once GW is successfully integrated, it will be the very heart of
our country.
Unlike Johnson, who wanted to use GW was a bargaining tool, Solidus wanted to
cause a rebellion. Outer Heaven - his plan to unleash a nuclear blast over the
skies of Wall Street, to break the Patriots control over the business
community - would also be a key factor is his offensive effort.
Finally, Johnson tells Raiden that he must find Emma Emmerich and put a virus
into GW. The virus is meant to disrupt the controls of GW and Arsenal Gear. It
should also be noted that this virus is basically a digital version of FoxDie.
He then tells Raiden to kill him. Raiden refuses, but Johnson brings Raiden's
gun to his chest, insisting on it. Out of nowhere, a shot hits the President,
and he falls dead. Raiden turns to see Revolver Ocelot holster his gun.
Ocelot: That's abusing your right to free speech, Mr. President...
Or is it Ex-President?
Raiden asks why he killed him, which Ocelots responds to with:
"Alas, my finger must have slipped."
Before leaving, he adds in:
"I'll see you around, carrier boy."
WAITAMINUTE, the Prez ain't dead! He grabs onto Raiden's leg with his last bit
of strength and says:
"Forget him. He did us a favor. Without freedom, there is no
difference between submission and rebellion. My only real choice
is to put a end to this charade. Let me at least have the freedom
to end it myself..."
Lot of text, eh? And that's summarized. Sitting through it is hell.
Anyway, Raiden’s gotta go save Emma Emmerich to shut down Arsenal’s AI. Blah,
down we go.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And the Emma goes to...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The basement is flooded. Raiden has to swim through to reach Emma’s location.
Finding Stillman’s bloated corpse on the way, he continues. Vamp tries to stop
him, but gets his ass kicked. Raiden moves along, find Emma, and listens to her
whine about not wanting to swim. He finally convinces her to at least strangle
him and he’ll swim her back.
The pain in the a...er, I mean, lovely young lady is scared of bugs, so she
refuses to go past the lot in front of the elevator. So, Raiden, being the
gentleman that he has, puts her in The Super Pimp Strangehold and drags her
uncooperative butt in there (okay, it's more likely he officially sprayed the
bugs, but hey, a guy can dream, can't he?).
On the way out, the duo discovers conveniently built planks and wires on the
bridge. Which is awfully nice, since the damn thing fell apart when Jackie boy
came across it before. But now you can't knock Emma down to a watery grave.
Poo. Unfortunately, there are still a few guard milling here and there, easily
disposed of by He Of Buttcrack-Revealing Suit. Seems if the Odd Couple can
make it to Shell 1 again (which they have to, to upload Emma's Virus in the
compy room), they won't have very much resistance there. Nearly everyone over
there is aboard Arsenal, according to Snake.
A Level 5 door bars their further progress. A door Raiden can’t open. He
doesn't have a 5 Card. But she does! Yay! So Emma gets to dillude herself into
thinking that she's not entirely useless for about a millisecond.
Whee! Zoom! Down the really, really tall ladder! Now to snipe and cover her as
she heads across the oil bridge, with Snake helping! Wagawoo!
All seems to be going well. Gun Cyphers, inept moron Russians, and Johnny are
no match for a Raiden/Snake superteam. However, the next guy to pop up and
cause trouble was no grunt.
Vamp sprang out, bam, just like that, knife at Emma's throat. But they need
her alive. Not only is ole Emma Otacon's stepsis, she is the only one that can
take down GW, Arsenal Gear's AI program (so yeah, a Level 5 Card isn't the
only thing she's good for, I admit).
Anyway, for reasons unknown, Snake ain't too much help in this boss fight. If
you ask me, he's too entranced by Vamp's manly pecs to make move, so Raiden
takes down the wizard with knives, as we see.
But, as Vamp is flying backwards with a hearty "BLURRAAGHH!!!" he guts Emma
like a fish. A fish...that can't swim, and has to chokehold flaxen-haired
pretty-boys while they do so.
WIth Vamp and his hypontizing pecs out of the way, Snake steals Raiden's
credit, rushing to get Emma and taking out a few Cyphers in the way. Off he
drags the bloody lass to the comp room, while Jack follows.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blood and Betrayal
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's true. Poor E.E. is screwed, as Raiden is informed. All they can do is
stanch the bleeding, and hope it gives her enough time to disable GW. But she
will not survive this day.
Raiden rushed to the computer room in the Shell 1 Core like a bat out of hell,
but by the time he reaches the room, Emma is moments from death. Otacon holds
her, Snake does that Snake-looking-glum thing he does.
Luckily, she managed to get the whole Operation Poop On Arsenal set up, where
all that needs to be done is for Jack to insert the disc he holds. He does so.
However, it isn't fully effective. Not 100%, but 90. Hopefully, that would be
enough.
Emma laments that she cares not to add onto the Emmerich's bad scientific
history, so she's glad that the virus was successful (the boys told her it was
totally so, rather than 90%). She asks Hal to call her Emma, instead of E.E.
as he always had. He doesn't know why. They have a few words, and then she
passes away, leaving a sobbing Hal, an unintentionally cruel parrot (it keeps
sqwauking "Hal! I miss you!" That's gotta hurt), and Snake and Raiden looking
on.
Arsenal's getting ready to launch. They're just about out of time. Otacon will
evac the hostages in the reapired chopper while Raiden and Snake go kick bad
guy ass. Otacon whines about how he's an encumbrance, but Snake sets him right.
Saving the hostages is his job, and it's very important. Spirit bolstered, Hal
joined Snake in a Super Cool Handshake And Hug Combo Of Friendship And Unity!
So off Hal goes, and Snake and Raiden get ready. Making a little bit of small
talk, Raiden wonders how they'll infiltrate Arsenal. Snake has the answer, in
the form of a until-now-stealth-camoed Ninja.
Snake has been working with the Ninja? It did help Raiden out a few times
before. Jack be confused, yo, and asks what the dilly-o be...dawg. Alright,
enough of that.
Raiden accuses Snake of switching sides, to which he hears a smug, "I don't
recall ever saying I was on yours." (Wrong, really. Earlier in the game, as
Pliskin, Snake specifically said he was on Raiden's side. He's a liar! Burn
'im!). The Ninja decides to show...HERself. It's Olga!
Anyway, Snake tells Raiden nighty-night. But as Raiden makes a move to attack,
he's got an HF Blade at his neck. Not good!
Down he goes...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did They Really Have To Take His Clothes?!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hmm...this looks familiar. Where have we seen this before? Of course! It's
just like the Shocky Machine Snake got fried at in MGS1. And I mean JUST LIKE
it. Fah-ree-kay.
What's goin' on he'ah?!
Raiden can hear Solidus and Ocelot chatting. There's a bad combination. Oddly,
Solidus insists he knows Raiden. In order to get a good look at the lad, he
uses one of his new tentacle-dealies to strangle Jack.
Solidus explains things. Raiden was a child soldier, called things like Jack
the Ripper, the White Devil. He was part of third-world country civil wars in
the 80's.
Ocelot and Solidus talk some more, about their plans, and what to do with Jack.
Apparently, he's rather inconsequential and they'll go on as if he didn't
exist.
Of course, Ocelot is happy about getting the disc from Raiden, and was so
happy, he wanted to see what else he was hiding. So he took all Jack's clothes!
Gah!
Olga enters, and shortly after she and Jack are alone. Over CODEC (jeez, does
everyone have one?!) she explains she's there to aid him. The Patriots have her
baby, and she has to help Raiden, lest baby go splat.
But why would the Pats wanna help Raiden? Hmm...
She continues, telling that Snake saved her from the Tanker and she is
grateful. In the end, her babies' life is solely dependant on Jack's success.
She also briefly mentions the S3 program, but I shan't delve into it.
The plan is as follows. Olga will release Raiden, and then he is to forage on
ahead and rendezvous with Snake, who has all Jack's gear. And his clothes too.
Who stripped Jack then?! Was it Ocelot? Or...Snake?
So, to prove to the watchful camera she doesn't like him, she punches Raiden
in...the gut? The nads? Not sure. He actually loses some life from his life
bar, though, so I think nads!
Not long after, the restraints pop off, and Raiden streaks to freedom!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's Something About Roy
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Raiden, you must continue the m-mission!!"
"Uh, yeah, okay..." Well, that's not what ole Jackie boy says, but he should
have. Something's going on. Something very not normal.
Not only is he traveling in a strange new land that is Arsenal Gear, with its
rectum just waiting to be explored by Raiden and friends, but there are crazy
ninja-guards around, affectionally referred to as the TENGU!!
Seeing this new opposition, Raiden makes the wise choice of limiting his
combat options even more. He has no weapons or equipment, but rather than AT
LEAST having his full hand-to-hand moveset and ability to hang, he'd rather
cover his wang.
Hey, that rhymed. Am I a poet who didn't know it? Okay, fine, moving on.
There are also RAYs like, everywhere. Fortunately, there's no one in them, and
they're not a threat. For now. Raiden speaks with Roy, who's still acting a
little odd. This brings Jack to ask (more like accuse) Roy if he's working for
the Patriots. The shifty Colonel dodges the question and orders Raiden to kill
Solidus, the terrorists, and retrieve Arsenal Gear.
It's then that Jack realizes something. He's never ever met Roy in person
Telling him about this, he hears a harsh, barking response, "We have Rosemary!
Over abd out!"
Raiden's having a bad day, and it just got a LOT worse.
Roy's gone mad with syphillis, it would seem. He continues to pester Jack as
the young man makes his way to Snake's location, and wackyness ensues!!
"This is a type of role playing game."
"Raiden turn the game console off right now!"
"Actually, there is something I have been meaning to tell you but I just
couldn't... I think you should know, though. On Saturday morning last week I
saw a guy leaving Rosemary's room...How should I put it, it was like they
were...'intimate.' I'm sorry. Sorry to bring this up during the mission,
but..."
"Variety Level 7 Shoot down the space invaders! Training will have to be
postponed if we are invaded by UFOs."
"Listen, you haven't reported in for a long time until now. You think you can
just CALL only when you want something? You disappoint me."
"I was a North American Fall Webworm in my past life. Those were the good old
days... What were you in your former life?"
"I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm, in flap-jaw space,
with the tuning fork, does a raw blink on Hiri-Kiri rock! I need scissors 61!"
"La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo! La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo! La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo!"
"...Infiltrate...the enemy fortress...Outer Heaven!
...Destroy...the final weapon...Metal Gear!"
"Communicator Entertainment Program Idea Spy 2.5 (Two-point-five) Episode 1 New
York. Here in the city where dreams come true and desires rule, something is
being bought, sold and thrown away, even as we speak. But behind the scenes of
business as usual, the nefarious J.E. (Junker Expensive) Corporation lines its
already bloated coffers with profits from worthless products. As J.E. swindles
yet another innocent into purchasing high-priced junk...the FBI mobilizes a
top-secret task force to put a stop to the menace. Now, the city's best-kept
secret spy is out there, briefed and ready to protect the people from J.E., the
catalogue of conspiracy -- just call him 2.5 (Two-point-five)."
"Munch, munch...Um? Raiden? I'm eating right now. Get back to me later...munch,
munch..."
"That reminds me, I saw Gubayama the other day in Shibomnigee. He said to give
you his best."
"I'm not home right now. Please leave a message after the beep. BEEP"
"ZZ...zz..."
"You got a PSG-1? You can use that against Sniper Wolf. Hurry up and save
Meryl!"
"Even my patience has its limits. I just can't leave this thing up to you any
longer. I'll do the fighting! You can just go home!"
"Actually, I am in really bad shape financially. I pay money to my ex-wife as
part of our divorce settlement, among other bills... I just had no choice but
to make you pay for lunch the other day. I'm really sorry."
"Big Boss here... Enter the track on the bridge to the right...Over."
He's KRAYZEE!!! Raiden agrees. A shocking communication comes in from Rose. It
insinuates she's...pregnant, but is cut off in mid-sentence. At long last, the
lad finds Snake, who makes light of his near-death situation against the Tengu
in the buff. He's got all of Raiden's gear, his Buttcrack Suit, and a new toy.
Olga's HF Blade! Boo-yah!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
News and Ten-goos
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Raiden was the bait to get aboard Arsenal. Olga let him on after pretending to
capture Raiden. Aw, shucks, we knew you hadn't gone bad, Snake. But there's
bad news along with the good.
25 RAYs. 25 to destroy. 25 between those two, and Solidus. Raiden, understand-
ably, is hardly thrilled. But Snake insists they shall overcome! So, in order
to effectively combat giant robots, Snake gives Raiden about 2 minutes to
master fighting with a sword. For robots. Yeah.
Lucky for him, in case he wants to use a gun, Snake assures him that he has
INFINITE AMMO. Right, so, take that, Fourth Wall! But before they set off to
their possible deaths, the two spend some quality bonding time over the
pleasant topic of the repercussions of killing people.
And they're about to kill a bunch more. Otacon comes in over CODEC, with good
news. He and the hostages are all safe and well and good, and moments after
Raiden asks Otacon to look into Roy's wackiness, they are spotted by a pesky
cypher, so it's time to run and gun through a tense hall of Tengu soldiers.
Through skill and perseverance, they defeat all adversaries and make it to the
door.
So, yeah, Hal returns with...strange news. He's found the Colonel. The Colonel
is inside Arsenal.
Scratch that. The Colonel... IS Arsenal. Rather, GW, Arsenal's AI. The signal
is identical, and it would explain that odd behavior as of late. Emma's virus.
Pretty freaky, but they have no choice but to fight on in spite of it.
Now, in a circle room, a veritable buttload of Tengus jump out and surround
Raiden and Solid. Another massive battle ensues, but when the gunsmoke clears
only two men are standing...
And. A lady.
Fortune! And she wants revenge on Solid, who she thinks killed Dolph, her dad!
She reasons that they'll fire the nuke, as she can't die. So why not kill
everyone else?
That's some pretty shifty logic. Snake tells Raiden to go up the nearby ladder
and continue on. He'll handle Fortune...somehow.
Raiden reaches the top of the ladder to find himself in a strange, virtual-
like world, overlooking a vast sea. The disembodied voice of Solidus Snake
speaks to him, explains things. Then, he sics the 25 RAYs on a lone operative.
The Stinger is Raiden's only hope. That, and the fact that the RAYs seem to
have been affected by Emma's virus as well. Precise shots to the knees and
then to the exposed maw makes short work of them.
They begin to fall like dominoes. One, two, three, the metal monsters pile up
and Raiden fires on and on, driven to bring Solidus to justice and get to the
bottom of this insane mission once and for all, or something like that.
Toppling RAY after RAY, it seems they'll never end. There are only a few left,
that Solidus himself mops up quite easily with his BADASS P-90. It's looking
bad. Olga is shot in the head by Solidus, Snake has been captured by Fortune,
Ocelot is in control of the remaining RAY (the non-automated one from the
Tanker).
Is this the end of our heroes?!
Not exactly. Not this time, ne'er-do-wells! But why? Cuz Ocelot is screwing
EVERYONE over! Hooray!
He explains, and it's a doozy. This, this whole thing, the entire everything,
has been a simulation. Certainly the locations were real, but it was all a
test, one to simulate Shadow Moses. For the S3.
Solid Snake Simulation.
To create a warrior on par with the greatest soldier, the man that can make the
impossible possible, the man that took down Big Boss. Raiden was selected for
this, as was Solidus to play his role. Raiden would be shaped via the S3. Dead
Cell was to represent Fox-Hound. Ames and the President's deaths. The virus
that mimicked FoxDie. The appearance of the Ninja. It would all play out
according to their designs, the will of the Patriots.
Ocelot also taunts Fortune, informing her she had nothing they didn't give her.
Why could no one hit her, shoot her? A device, that the Patriots had on her
(that she somehow never knew about?). It deflected bullets and the like. No
doubt how Ocelot was able to steal RAY all those years ago on the Tanker,
despite getting shot at by a bunch of Marines.
Ocelot, smugly, finishes off Fortune. Shoots her dead in the heart.
Solidus, now, he ain't to keen on getting used, so he attacks Ocelot, fires on
him with the P-90. But, of course, with that device and with Ocelot now in RAY
it is useless. But before Ocelot can launch a barrage of missiles to kill the
three remaining people on Arsenal, his arm starts twitching...
Oceliquid. Yep, remember him? Liquid takes over, explaining his motives:
Liquid: Brothers!
Solid: Liquid!
Liquid: I've been waiting for this!
Solidus: It can't be...?
We are shown flashbacks of Liquid at Shadow Moses while Liquid narrates over:
Liquid: I've been inside this arm all along, waiting for the right time to
awaken!
Solid: You were inside Ocelot?
Liquid: Yes, a sleeper in the arm of a Patriot spy.
Solid: It was you two years ago?
Liquid: Exactly. I was controlling him. Snake, it was I that leaked
information about Arsenal to your partner and got you out here.
You're the only one that can free me, after all...
Liquid: I'm off to bury the Patriots for good!
Solidus: You know where they are? How?
Liquid: Why do you think I choose Ocelot as my host? But before I go, I
have a family matter to settle with both of you. There's room for
only one Snake, and one Big Boss!
That clever Liquid. And so attractive, too. He launches a barrage of missiles
at the heroes (and the one "villain").
Missiles bearing down. DOOOOOoooommm....or not. Fortune, it turns out, is
still alive, and thanks to the power that it turns out she really did have, she
diverts the exploding death. "She really is lady luck." Snake comments, but she
dies for good afterwards, joining her family.
"Like surfing? It's a good way to go!" Liquid taunts, making his escape. Solid
breaks the cuffs that he received post-capture and pursues his tyrannical
brother...'s arm...in an old fart. Raiden, also in cuffs, is unable to break
his and aid Snake.
Arsenal, shortly after, takes off, and Solidus and Raiden are going along for
the ride.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Damn the Patriots!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arsenal, in a wise move, decides to crash into Manhattan. Solidus and Raiden
are tossed like corks onto the roof of Federal Hall. After a nice history
lesson from a rather chatty Solidus, Raiden receives a CODEC call from...GW?
"But the AI was destroyed!" Raiden exclaims with us.
It is not GW, but another AI, of another Arsenal Gear. JFK, this one is. And
this one not only simulates Roy's visage, but that of Rose as well. And Roy
turns into a skeleton sometimes during the chats, which is damn freaky.
JFK explains more of this crazy plot. Ocelot wasn't mistaken, but he didn't
know the WHOLE truth. S3 did not stand for Solid Snake Simulation.
It stood for Silly Saltha Siesta!!!
Okay, it stood for Selection for Societal Sanity.
It was all a test, again, to see if the Patriots themselves could pass. Could
create a situation and control it to its fullest, to control Raiden, who was
selected. If they could control him, they could control the U.S. population,
make them believe anything.
If Raiden kills Solidus, they shall consider the mission a success. If Raiden
does not kill Solidus, they will kill Olga's child, and Rose, who is revealed
as a Patriot spy, who modelled herself after what would be considered Jack's
perfect woman.
But even hearing this, he still loves her, and Olga's baby is an innocent.
It's also revealed the various names. Jack. Raiden. Names for aircraft.
Weapons. Is Jack nothing more than a living weapon?
Adding fuel to the fire, Solidus reveals he killed Raiden's parents, and was
now poised to do in the lad himself.
But at least it would be a somewhat fair fight. Solidus returns to Raiden his
HF Blade. Solidus has two blades. Raiden has a Buttcrack Suit. Solidus has a
Doc Ock Suit.
Who will win? The Patriots creation? Or Solidus'?
Beloved monsters...enjoy yourselves.
After a long and decisive battle, Raiden emerges the victor, knocking Solidus
off Federal Hall to his death (probably, but these Snake Brothers are a tena-
cious sort).
And thus, the Patriots win. S3 is a success...
Down on the street, Raiden encounters Snake. He asks what happens, to which
the grizzled bandanna-wearer replies that Liquid got away. He tagged the RAY.
But Raiden is conflicted.
"Who am I really?" he laments.
Snake tells him, "No one quite knows who or what they are. The memories you
have and the role you were assigned are burdens you had to carry. It doesn't
matter if they were real or not. That's never the point. There's no such thing
in the world as absolute reality. Most of what they call real is actually
fiction. What think you see is only as real as your brain tells you it is."
"Then, what am I supposed to believe in? What am I going to leave behind when
I'm through?" asks Jack.
"We can tell other people about -- having faith. What we had faith in. What we
found important enough to fight for. It's not about whether you were right or
wrong, but how much faith you were willing to have, that decides the future.
The Patriots are kind of ongoing fiction too, come to think of it... Listen,
don't obsess over words so much. Find the meaning behind the words, then
decide. You can find your own name and your own future.
Raiden is still confused. "Decide for myself...?"
"And whatever you choose will be you."
"I don't know if I can."
"I know you didn't have much in terms of choices this time, but everything you
felt, thought about during this mission is yours, and what you decide to do
with them is your choice..."
"You mean start over?"
"Yeah, a clean slate. A new name, new memories. Choose your own legacy. It's
for you to decide. It's up to you. By the way, what is that?"
"Dog tags?" Raiden says quizzically, looking on them to find whatever the
player put at the outset of the Plant chapter.
Snake wonders, "Anyone you know?"
"No, never heard the name before. I'll pick my own name...and my own life.
I'll find something worth passing on. They taught me some good things too."
Snake agress. Hey, was that Vamp at some point? Yep. "I know. We've inherited
freedom from all those who fought for it. We all have the freedom to spread
the word. Even me."
"Snake, what about Olga's child?"
"Don't worry. I'll find him. Count on it. As long as you keep yourself alive,
he's safe."
"Do you know where Liquid went?"
"I put a transmitter on his RAY," Snake explains.
"Did he head for the Patriots?"
"Yeah. But I have a feeling they gave Ocelot a bogus location to begin with.
Cheer up. We have a better lead. This contains a list of all the Patriots,"
Snake boasts. It's the disc Ocelot took.
"But Ocelot took it!" Yeah, I just said that, Jack...
"The one we gave you wasn't the real thing." That trickster!
"What?"
"This virus is coded to destroy only a specific part of GW -- namely the
information about the Patriot's identity. Which means that there's a parameter
coded in here that defines what that information is, namely the information
about the Patriot's identity."
Woohoo!
"I get it. Analyze the code and you can probably find out where they operate.
Count me in --"
Sorry, Jack. A lot of very stupid people didn't like you. I dunno if we'll be
seeing you again.
"No, you have things to do first. And people you need to talk to..."
Like Rose! That spy, but she love Raiden, and he her. So now they can get past
that whole spy unpleasantness and raise that kid. As a family, as Raiden says.
A proposal? Aw...
After the credits roll, Snake gives yet another monologue, as we are shown
more scenes of New York City.
Life isn't just about passing on your genes. We can leave behind
much more than just DNA. Through speech, music, literature and
movies... what we've seen, heard, felt ...anger, joy and
sorrow... these are the things I will pass on. That's what I
ive for.
We need to pass the torch, and let our children read our messy
and sad history by its light. We have all the magic of the
digital age to do that with. The human race will probably come to
an end some time, and new species may rule over this planet. Earth
may not be forever, but we still have the responsibility to leave
what traces of life we can. Building the future and keeping the
past alive are one and the same thing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ole Epilogue Cliffhanger Dealie
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After Snake's monologue, we're given, in traditional MGS sense, a conversation
that is played over a black screen that says "Metal Gear Solid 2". In this
conversation, we find out that Otacon has examined that disc. One of the names
was one of Philanthropy's biggest funders. But that's not the weirdest part.
The weirdest part is...they are all dead.
But that's not the weirdest part, either! The weirdest part is that they all
died...about a hundred years ago!
In the words of Snake:
What the hell?!
I think reading this will be much more managable than re-playing 1 and 2 again, but obviously less fun. >_> It's a nice way to recap what the hell happened.

I wouldn't mind replaying all the games. I re-played MGS2 before I opened MGS3.
Oh come one, give the dude a break. Maybe he comes from a time where the internet is limited with 20 pages and has no new resources ^_^;
Solid_Snake (how dare you have that name O_O), Subsistance is the new extra packed snake eater with online play.
Now either change your name, read thru this thread or get with the times or you won't survive long.
LOL, I have 2 preorder discs! I got one from Gamestop for preordering, but I had to cancel the reservation because I had to leave town the week it came out. I preordered again while I was visiting my parents and now I have 2 discs.
So, anyone have a favorite online map? I love Brown Town, mostly because it looks like the battlefield in the MGS4 trailer. I like the City Under Siege, but there are too many snipers there. I'm fairly good at sniping, but there's always someone better.
WOOOO! Online was great. I was kicking some real ass, but the server aborted connection, so I was kicked, and my score was not counted. I did so good as to reach Reiko level, and I was Reiko.... That was fun...
This should have been in the game manual because the manual barely tells you anything about online play. I didn't discover using L1 to lock on for several days after I've played online. I think alot of people still don't know about it because I totally dominated a match today, and I know I'm not that good.
That's a pretty sweet "manual" there, seeing some dude named "Huke" penned the comic-style instructions, much like the previous MGS instruction manuals. Herm, the more I hear about all this on-line stuff, the more I'm inclined to get a network adapter. Damn, wait till my finals are over. ;_;

WoW that's nice =D I'll get my copy soon! Can't wait for it but... I'm playing FF XII now so it will be quite a problem for me to play both games =P.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body?

Love the manual too, by the way. That's the one from Konami's official site right? I remember someone mentioning it in Gamefaqs, but you know how credible they can be.
I hope the "To be Continued" hints at possible updates. I've thought up so many new characters and modes, it isn't funny.
For example, throw in The Boss, and make her CQC move dismantle the opponent's weapon. Toss in that crazy hand-cannon of hers too.
Vamp with a CQC move that steals life (you know how) would be cool too.
But out of everyone, I'd love to have Volgin as a special character. Imagine being able to form a wall of electricity to block bullets. Have your allies hide behind you while you generate the shield, and the strategies are endless.
I hate the camera in this game. Honestly, I thought they might have fixed it, but it feels like I have to manage the angle always instead of it being perhaps convenient or over the shoulder or something.
I'd comment on online play, but since I stole the game and am playing it on HDLoader, don't think I can play online.
Eleo:
To access Secret Theater you first need a save file from the single player game on the Subsistence disc and you must select "I like MGS3" when you start the game. Once you have a save file, put in the second disc and it should be unlocked. Thats how it is on a REAL copy anyway. Seriously, at only $30, online play is totally worth it. I love the new camera (you know you can switch it back to original view by pressing R3 right?). I haven't really played single player much, but in online play you can adjust how fast the camera spins, giving you even better surrounding awareness.
SOLDIER:
Thanks for the compliment. That is indeed the comic from the Kojima Productions website. I don't know about new characters to download. Though it would be cool, it would eat up so much memory card space that it's not even worth it. The downloadable camos alone are pretty hefty. This isn't X-box live, PS2 has no harddrive unforetunately (The HDD doesn't count as you can't save memory card information to it and it doeasn't work with the slim PS2). It would be cool to see all the characters from the MGS universe in the game. Raiden could have a sword. Ninja would have a sword+stealth camo+jumping abilities, but he would also randomly loose control and shout "the medicine!" durring play. Liquid might have a CQC that kills oponents instantly (except Snake), and would be able to absorb RPG damage. Psycho Mantis could float, throw objects and dodge bullets unless you use Port 2. The possibilities are endless. Vulcan Raven would have his minigun, but he would move more slowly than the other characters. Olga might be able to talk you to death while you fight her. Old Ocelot would be the same as young Ocelot except he'd have his bullet curving "device" (runnig on batteries of coarse). Fat Man might be able to skate quickly around the level and lay more powerful claymores everywhere. Eva would be able to use her Lipstick/gun to kill an oponent instantly. She'd also be able to unzip her shirt and distract enemies temporarily like the Book. The Fury could hover around and use his Flamethrower while moving. The Pain could use swarms of bees to attack, as well as block bullets and grenades temporarily (though that might be a problem to render online).
Yes, it would be really cool to play as all these characters. Perhaps there could even be a "Special characters only" mode where everyone is a special character. However I don't think it's going to happen for Subsistence. It looks like we'll have to wait for MGS4's online mode before we see new special characters.

Love the manual too, by the way. That's the one from Konami's official site right? I remember someone mentioning it in Gamefaqs, but you know how credible they can be.
The comic was also in the Japanese manual which was more than 100 pages compared to the skimpy booklet the US version got.
