Advise needed on RPG game and console
I need some advise on what RPG game and console to buy next.
I've been thinking of buying a PS3, I've read that the last version Slim is not backward compatible (able to play PS2 games, what a shame) Only that PS3 40GB and 60GB are, but those are not produced anymore. I've also thought of Xbox360, but I'm not sure of that. It all comes down to which console has the best RPG games. What I'm looking for in a game is pretty much what you see in Final Fantasy IX. I've been thinking of buying FFXIII, but it doesn't appeal to me that much. After reading the reviews that it's rather linear and the leveling up system reminds my of FFX. I did not like that. Another game I read some reviews of too was Yakuza 3. It's more beat the crap out of people, but still big world. Some of my favorite games: 1. Final Fantasy IX (PS1) Great story, music, mini-games, exploring a big world 2. Final Fantasy VII (PS1) Same as FFIX, but personally I like FFIX a little bit more 3. Secret of Mana (SNES) 4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) 5. Star Ocean 3: Til the End of Time Could also add that I'm from Sweden. Jam it back in, in the dark.

Just stick with a PS2. Has numerous RPG titles and has BC to boot.
(and apparently an emulator for your retro console needs) There's nowhere I can't reach. |
There are a ton of great rpgs available for the PS2 and you can pick them up very cheap these days. You should look into Shin Megami Tensei:Lucifer's Call (Called Nocturne in the US), Shadow Hearts and Suikoden V (And Suikoden 1 and 2 but good luck finding those if you don't already own them).
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I don't know about PS3 but a quick list of some of the RPGs available for the 360.
Blue Dragon Lost Odyssey Tales of Vesperia Infinite Undiscovery Magna Carta 2 Star Ocean: Last Hope Last Remnant Spectral Force 3 Mass Effect 1 and 2 Dragon Age Origins And... is Operation Darkness an RPG? I haven't played it yet so not sure. Also didn't they take backwards compatability out of the PS3s prior to the slim models? I thought it was an attempt to cut costs. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
(Seriously this is the worst suggestion on the planet. A better RPG would be 'putting your junk in a food processor') Most amazing jew boots |
The PS3 has Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's Souls, Folklore, and 3D Dot Game Heroes coming out in May.
If you're looking for something on 360/PS3 similar to FF IX then I suppose Vesperia fits that the closest. Aside from the totally different battle system it has a nice world map, tons of side quests, and you learn abilities from weapons like in IX. Same with how you learn abilities in Lost Odyssey from what I remember. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Tales of Vesperia sounds interesting. Haven't found it for PS3 in Sweden though. FELIPE NO

Oh, I didn't mean that it was multi-console. As far as I know Vesperia is only out on PS3 in Japan with no announcement of an NTSC or PAL version yet.
How ya doing, buddy? |
From Wikipedia: As of January 27th, 2010 Namco Bandai Games said it has currently 'no plans' to release this port outside of Japan[13], however it should be noted that Namco Bandai had said the same about Eternal Sonata for the PS3[14] only to be released months later. In addition, anecdotal evidence has arisen that indicates a Western localization is imminent. Voice actor Troy Baker has stated the English cast has already begun recording additional dialogue required for the port[15]. The Tales of Vesperia PS3 demo was released July 13, 2009 in the Japan PSN store. How ya doing, buddy? |
I just re-bought the 360 version, so I expect the PS3 version to be announced for North America very shortly.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
As far as I know, the only RPG exclusives that PS3 really has over 360 are the Nippon Ichi games. How ya doing, buddy? |
You're right, of course.
I'm just saying it's beyond terrible. Like I'm talking you can take a big sloppy dump on top of a orphan and it would still be no where near as terrible a sight as this thing. Also the correct answer to this thread is "get a PS2". Term got it right. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
You guys missed Eternal Sonata for Xbox360.. for whatever that's worth. At least I liked the music, and the average graphics.
...There are also a decent selection of RPG games for the Gamecube, which are totally compatible for Wii Tales of Symphonia Baten Kaitos I and II Fire Emblem Path of Radiance ...Well not that decent, but good games though I was speaking idiomatically. |
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? John Mayer just asked me, personally, through an assistant, to sing backup on his new CD. |
Operation Darkness isn't the worst rpg ever but even playing the demo made me want to slam my head in a car door. Technically it's a strategy rpg but if you like those and you own a 360 you're better off buying Vandal Hearts off the arcade which is actually pretty fun.
I reckon the PSP has a better rpg line up than the PS3, seeing as how it has a few offical PS1 conversions and it takes so little effort to play all the other PS1 games on it. PS2 is the best option, then 360. If you like action rpgs then you get Too Human, Sacred 2, Borderlands, Fallout 3, Oblivion and as of next year, Space Marine which is probably going to be the best game ever of all time ever. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Last Remnant is technically better on PC but it's also a lot easier because of the whole party made of leaders thing and most of the fun of the game is how hard it is.
Given that the thread title is "RPG game and console", PC games are entirely irrelevant to the conversation, particularly since you didn't mention any of the really good PC RPGs. Kindly refrain from such spammy posts in future. But yeah, Infinite Undiscovery, lol. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I've decided to go with Xbox360, cheap than PS3, and I can get FFXIII if I'd like to.
PC games isn't of interest for me. It's like playing Russian roulette, "May it works, maybe it won't". That's one of the main reasons I stick with console. WoW is the only exception that I now and then play to pass time. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
