Anyone know any good alternatives to Microsoft Word?
I tried to reinstall Microsoft Office onto my laptop, but during the installation process, I get some kind of error message saying something about some kind of fault or something that occurred during the installation process and then the installer would close. Since I'm getting sick of trying to mess around with this thing, I am thinking about just downloading some sort of alternative to Microsoft Word.
Does anyone have any suggestions for any good alternatives to Microsoft Word? Preferably something that reads DOC files or DOCX files? Thanks. Jam it back in, in the dark. |

yea,openoffice too great.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Star Office is another good free alternative.

There is no real alternative to Office 2007 to open DOCX. You have to go though some ridiculous conversion process to get a docx file to open in Openoffice and 90% it breaks all advanced formatting.
Personally I think you are better off just trying to troubleshoot the Office 2007 install because nothing really comes close to how feature rich and intuitive Office as become since 2007 was released. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |

Even if you go with Office 2003, you can download a fix from the MS website to allow it to open .docx or .xlsx files. Like I say, if you just need it for writing up essays then Open Office is probably fine for but it's just not up to the task of professional use (Although I suspect if you were doing anything professional with it you'd have just bought Office already). There's nowhere I can't reach. |
OpenOffice.org has been able to read *.docx files since version 3.0. I've been working with OOo in MS Office-heavy environments quite well, mainly due to the fact that people tend to stay the hell away from MS Office 2007 and its weird Ribbon interface, along with a general preference for the pre-2007 document formats, for maximum compatibility with machines that run the older versions (any official or unofficial patches notwithstanding). Ironically this also works in favor of OOo, which by now handles those formats quite effortlessly and its more MS Office 2003-like interface is probably going to hasten adoption quite a bit.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Can anyone explain to me why my installation of OpenOffice crashes when I try to paste anything from another window? I know the topic isn't really about that, but it seems like I might get some help from the folks who are self-proclaimed OO users.

Sounds like that type of nasty issues that would take longer to figure out than reinstalling the software or upgrading it to the latest version. 3.0.1 just came out, it's a bugfix release so it might be for you.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
