Burning & Ripping Questions (noob alert!)

Hello,

I'd like to make backups from my DVD movies but I'm kind of a noob on this ripping and burning stuff, so I'd ask you what is the best way to rip and burn DVDs.
First of all, should I create an image file from the original DVD or make a direct copy? I'm not even sure if this works because some movies have protections and such, I think.
Secondly, what do you recommend me, DVD+R or -R? I don't know which one is the best for movies and its difference. I usually use +R TDK DVDs to burn anime.
Third, since I want the exact same image quality, I'd ask you what is the best program to rip. I have done some in the past with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and they seemed OK.

I think that is all for now, thanks in advance. :3
