how to get to bed at night?
well guys, iv;e been missing a lot of school, simply because I wake up late and go to bed...mad late...I'm just not tired. I've tried going to bed at like 11, just to lie in there for hours and not fall asleep. does anyone know any food or anything? or activity i could do to fall asleep at night? ANYTHING would help me. I heard bananas help that stuff. who knows.

Working out and getting up early works great for me.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Maybe its silly, but when my sleep cycle goes out of whack for too long (during winter break I was up until 3am and usually slept until 1 or 2), I skip a night. I literally just don't sleep. I pull an all nighter, and the next night I'm so tired that it fixes everything. This may not work for some people though, and probably isnt good for you. I've only done it a couple times myself.

Drink milk. Read a book (eye tiredness really makes me sleepy). Eating a large meal will make you sleepy too, although I don't recommend that just before going to sleep; still, it's something to think about.

If all else fails, Nyquill (sp?) is always an option.

Yeah, exercise is great. Gives your body a better reason to want to rest. Try and commit yourself to sleeping the same hours every night. The couple of hours before bedtime stay out of bright light, do things thatll relax you. Reading the hour before I went to sleep did wonders for me when I had this problem years ago.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Ambient music always helps me when I really can't sleep. Some albums you might want to try:
Dr. Jeffrey Thompson - Ambient Music for Sleep Hammock - Kenotic Eluvium - Talk Amongst the Trees Robert Fripp and Brian Eno - The Equatorial Stars Colleen - The Golden Morning Breaks And for one that bridges the rather wide gap between ambient music and pop: Cocteau Twins - Victorialand Jam it back in, in the dark.

Music always works, but i've always tried to take the easy way out covering my eyes with a soft pillow so my eyes can't see any light. After a while, I doze right off.
How ya doing, buddy? |
Forcing it unfortunately doesn't work for me either. Try something boring and productive like studying or note making. Forcing that might work and help in both ways. If you do it for hours straight and don't take a break you might be so burned out at the end that you'll plop right asleep. Then again, having the willpower to start something like that is another tough issue to tackle.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |

I wake up early and try to stay up until I'm ready to go to bed. After a bit of that, I was sleeping from 6pm to 5am.

I use a breathing technique associated with meditation. I found that when I concentrate on steady slow breaths I'm out in minutes.
Streaching helps as well to if you're tense and worried like I have been. If all eles fails, find a bible and go to psalms. Even when I'm wide awake and trying to study, the words just dissolve my concentration by reading that section. How ya doing, buddy? |
I actually have another suggestion for falling asleep, but it might need some practice before you get it to work. I can see how it won't work for some people because they are too impatient or easily irritated, but for me it works almost every time.
What I do is that when I can't sleep, I try to relax every part of my body as well as try to eliminate anything that annoys me. The elimination part can be anything from the room being too bright to me having to wash my face because the "sticky" or "fatty" feeling irritates me. I think a lot of people especially miss the "trying to relax" part. Important! You have to relax EVERY part of your body, including your -----> eyelids! <----- I remember trying to relax never finding out why I didn't fall asleep when suddenly I realized that I wasn't relaxing my eyelids. I was to bsy focusing on my body that I didn't realize that I was actually holding my eylids together too tightly. The secret is to try to get your eyelids to close just right. Sometimes this can be hard to do, but there are always methods, like the one Chaotic mentioned. Finally, when you've eliminated all the irritation factors and your body is fully relaxed, you have to try to clear your mind of thoughts. Thinking while trying to sleep mostly has the opposite effect on me so I try not to think in words. Instead, I try to combine imagery with sound(I'm sometimes able to "hear" music) in my mind to make my own movie. The importance lies in trying to make concistent imagery so that your mind doesn't wander off into thinking about something else (if you don't control it, you might start thinking about problems and worries instead). It might sound goofy, but it works wonders for me. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Among some of the excellent specifics, I'd make sure to get up earlier in stages, you know. I mean, if you usually wake up at eleven, say, try getting up at ten the next morning, and then nine, and work your way down to where you're going - even on days off.

Fifteen minutes of absolutely furious masturbation tends to "relax the body" pretty well, too.

No matter whether you work out or fap until exhaustion, you'll feel a burn~ Jam it back in, in the dark.

Relax with the direction your comments are taking. You'll end up like the sandpeople you've seen before. (And will be seeing in my av/sig set tomorrow)

Reading really does it for me. Also, do you shower right before you go to bed? Because honestly, showers can wake you up... I have the bad habit of showering late at night. Also, you're supposed to avoid caffeine any time after 6pm or so. Melatonin is a natural something (supplement? whatever) that the body produces and can be bought at the store... Take it a coupla hours before bedtime.

The best trick is to just stay up all night. Guaranteed you will fall asleep like a baby the next night. Or have at most four hours of sleep. Sucks but it works.
