I've got some sort of a noobish question here: Would it be possible to hook your PS3 up to a PC LCD monitor (e.g. 1280x1024 native resolution)?

They're considerably cheaper than a full blown HDTV set and a 17" or 19" LCD monitor should support 720p via a HDMI to DVI-D converter, right?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

You wouldn't even need a converter, just an HDMI to DVI cable. I don't remember if it supports odd resolutions (like 768p on many flat panel LCD TVs), though if it does, then all you need is that cable, and use the AV out for sound.

Or you could set the machine at 720p, which comes in slightly lower than 1280 x 1024. Let's wait until some guys have it here, so we can find out what it'll output.

That's what I was aiming for, yes.

I've done some research on the HDMI to DVI thing and it seems there might be trouble if the monitor (or the cable?) doesn't support HDCP.

From the official PS3 manual:

That just has to do with BLU-RAY and HD-DVD movies. You do not have to worry about HDCP with the gaming portion of your PS3.

One of the many reasons why I hate the DRM bullshit on both formats.

Hey just an off the topic question. Since 720p seems like the ideal thing with gaming these days, would this tv work at all with a 720p resolution for my PS3?

Unfortunately, it was mentioned a few days ago that Sony extended HDCP to cover even the games passing a signal over HDMI. It was one of the reasons why BlimBlim got his hopes shattered since if this wasn't in place, he could simply record gameplay off the machine.

This sucks for people with older HDTVs that lack any sort of HDCP compliance.

And just so you know, the ones you should be fuming at is the motion picture industry. They're the ones who set the requirements for their movies to be on any new formats. So what we get is DRM'd, copy protection all around.

Here's an interesting question... considering that my widescreen monitor has DVI input, but isn't actually an HDTV, how would I go about determining what HD resolutions it supports? I understand now about Interlaced and Progressive Scan, though they aren't common terminology when it comes to computer monitors.

The monitor's native resolution is 1680x1050... so it doesn't seem like it would support 1080 by 30 bloody pixels. Would there be a way for me to tell then which 720 my monitor supported? (I don't want downgrade )

Modern monitors are all progressive, and they've had HD resolutions available for some time now. All you need to worry about, since the i/p question is answered, is if the monitor's native resolution is higher than what you're going to set in the PS3's output menu. It's better to have a smaller picture, than one that's cut off the edges, unless your monitor has some overscan controls you can fidget with.

There's only one 720p, and that's the HD standardized 1280 x 720p. The console resolution set at that will fit fine on your monitor, but since it's not recommended res for the monitor (assuming this is an LCD) you'll see PQ losses.

Still, a much better alternative than buying an HDTV for the console.

That's the word, hopefully it's not true, but from all the display issues popping up (720p being downscaled by the console? 480i/p settings for proper PS2 game playback?) it may hold true.

You know, after reading that last article again, I feel pretty sorry for the Chinese elderly people that waited in line. Sure they got compensation of 20,000 yen from the businessmen, about $185 USD, and waiting in line is a pretty low skilled "job" if you will. Even with all this laughing and joking aside, I do feel sorry for some of them that just need that money, and have to bear through the throngs of pushy crowds and the like (and perhaps the bewilderment on the Japanese store clerk's faces as well, lost in language).

I swear this is the best time of the holidays, reading and watching all these crazies line up, riot, and pay stupid amounts of money for the big item this year (it was today that I learned that similar madness is occuring for a "Tickle-me Elmo XTREME". Come on now).

My job was well aware of this insanity as well. The "Boss" I mentioned previously caught on that I'd be picking up a system tommorow, and asked if I'd be skipping work. I tried to hold my ground and say that I wouldn't, but get this; she also egged me on.

So, I'm off tommorow. I told them the reason was that I had to take my mom's brother's cousin's dog to the vet ("what's the dog's name?" ".....Sony."), which of course no one believed, but I wanted that to stay on record. It sure is a fun job; she reminicsed about previous systems like the PS2 and SNES (she said she found the SNES educational in developing her little boy's coordination skills, the game in question being Donkey Kong Country), but she isn't willing to shell out the amount for a PS3.

One day left, and you bet I'm excited. However, this news of the downscaling in HDTV's really rubs me the wrong way. If I knew about this sooner, I'd probably put off buying a PS3 at launch and settle for the Wii first. No bones about it, this is Sony's biggest screwup, and they better make sure to fix it with an update (and that's if it's even possible to fix via update) STAT.

To YOUR monitor maybe but that's not universally true. Windows vista will support HDCP content thus some monitors (specifically the Dell 2407 WFP revision A03) DO support that. Or (I don't know if these even exist) you could get Component -> DVI/VGA and settle for 1080i (As the only way to get 1080p is through HDMI).

Good luck on getting a PS3 guys. Sadly I'll probably have to wait until next March or so to get one. I only had the money for one console this time.

Be sure to post your feelings when you start to play it. I'm eager to hear what you guys think being able to finally play it!
