Interesting stuff. I considered getting one at one point, but a friend told me it ate through batteries like mad, which is definitely one factor in it failing (aside from the lack of games too).
I think if it were released today, using today's technology, it probably could've stood a chance if it garnered enough 3rd party support (or it better have some really kickass games that can stand to the gameboy games). Alas, it was released before its time, and helped to add another notch to the gameboy's list of victories over its competitors.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
