I registered and didn't think twice about it. The financial aid is quite nice for helping pay for school. Although I could've applied for a lot of financial aid, being a 1st generation (means my parents didn't go to college), low-income student (and yes, I grew up poor), I chose to join the military first (partly cause I was "tired of school" at the time, because I was undecided on what to major in, and finally, I "wanted to see the world" lol).
It does suck though, when all you can get are loans for school (unless you're going to medical school or something that requires like 10 years of schooling), but you don't necessarily have to go to Harvard or Yale (really expensive schools) either. There are plenty of more cost-effective colleges you can go to (state universities are often a good choice, and if nothing else, community colleges), and still get a decent education.
In the US anyway, the military isn't a bad choice either. The Army will help you pay for some of your schooling if you decide to take college courses while you're serving, or if they still have EarmyU (where you get a free laptop, and free online college courses, the stipulation being you have to have at least 3 more years of service, and you have to pass your classes), that's a good way to go too. The Air Force has their own college as well, and then there's always the GI Bill (money to help pay for schooling after you get out of the service), or College Loan Repayment program (if you've already gone to college and have debts to pay off). Of course, don't join the military solely for this reason, or you're going to hate your time in the service.
I don't know how the military works in other countries, but it'd be cool if they offered something similar (the GI Bill was started after WW2 to help soldiers who were fighting during the war get a college education, and I have to say, it's a really good program).
Jam it back in, in the dark.
