It's kind of strange actually. Although I pretty much just listen to VGM, I haven't gotten too many weird looks or "wtf are you listening to?" responses before (probably cause people don't really give a damn at my school, which is fine with me).
There was one time when I was listening to "One-winged Angel" (final boss music from FF7 in case you forgot), and despite having the volume turned down (was sitting in class, waiting for the class to start), and someone asked what I was listening to. But before I could answer it, someone else told him what it was, so I just kept on listening to it. I have to admit though, it does sound a little "strange" coming from headphones if you're not hearing it directly.
My sister-in-law sometimes mocks me about the music, but she doesn't mind it much either. She said that it's pretty relaxing to listen to most of the time.
When I was in the National Guard, I was sitting up on a hill with another soldier buddy of mine. I was playing my gameboy to kill the time at night, and he wanted to go to bed, but was having trouble sleeping, so he asked if he could listen to my MP3 player with all my VGM songs on it.
After a few days, he said that he liked listening to the music because it was relaxing (he was mostly listening to Suikoden 3 and Final Fantasy X).
For the most part, I don't care if people give me strange looks when they hear the music I like. Beats songs where they cuss every other word or super loud heavy metal where the guy probably has hearing problems by now with the volume turned up in a silent area.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
