Official MUGEN Thread
The subject of MUGEN started in the Doujin thread, but I felt that it deserved it's own thread, as the sheer size and scope of MUGEN is gigantic.
For newbies, you can find out what the deal is with MUGEN here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUGEN For everyone else who wants the short version, MUGEN is a program that enables you to add as many characters and stages from existing games (or custom fighters created from existing templates), then pit them all together in what is undeniably the mother of all crossover fights. Previous official crossovers like Capcom vs SNK or Capcom Fighting Evolution look pathetic by comparison. Here's some videos to better illustrate the insanity. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q6xjtsqen5Q&search=mugen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOB8A...gen%20movie%20 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxW4x...h=mugen%20boom Naruto vs Duck Dodgers, Earthworm Jim vs Goku, a team battle of Evil Dan and Sailor Jupiter vs Wolverine and Mario? There's absolutely no limit to the kind of matchups you can create. Of course, this creates quite a bit of imbalance, especially in the case of custom characters given god-like superpowers (especially the custom DBZ characters. Believe it or not, people found a way to make them more exaggerated), but this was never meant as a serious fighter, just an entertaining orgy of crack-driven fighting bliss. Unfortunately, MUGEN is also very time consuming to use. You pretty much have to bulid up everything from scratch. Even if you scour the net and download all the characters and stages you can find, you still have to manually set them in via the .def file in MUGEN, along with mp3s, title cards, joypad keys, and anything else necessary. So because of this, I find this MUGEN thread to be absolutely necessary for newbies like myself to create a program as complete and polished as what was shown in the YouTube videos. There have been MUGEN-related forums in the past that usually closed due to constant complaining over the creators of the characters and stages, but fortunately GFF isn't as anal when it comes to legal issues like that. So in short, this thread will deliver on the following: 1. Character Requests: Request and provide any rare characters you might have. 2. Stage Requests: Same deal. 3. Song Suggestions: Got a rocking mp3 that would be appropriate for a certain stage? By all means share it with us. 4. Help Desk: Help people out with installing or configuring MUGEN. It's a pretty tricky program, so there's bound to be problems here and there. 5. Screens/Videos: Got some amusing matchups to share? Go ahead. So let's get started. Here's MUGEN for Windows. http://rapidshare.de/files/26551866/...patch.zip.html Here's the most popular screenpack, Everything vs Everything (thanks to BIGWORM). http://rapidshare.de/files/26550010/EVE.rar.html And here are some tutorial files. http://www.mugenfury.com/?lang=en And a place with some rather rare characters. http://mugenguild.cjb.net/ IMPORTANT: And here is the quickest and easiest way to get started on MUGEN. EVE is already installed, along with several hundred characters, stages, and music. I definetely recommend you start your MUGEN experience with this. http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/53...ers_200_stages Only two things you should know. 1. Gambit doesn't work, so remove him (but don't just cut him out or you'll mess up the selection screen. replace him with someone else). 2. You'll need a program called 7-zip to open the file. It works like Winrar and it's free. http://www.7-zip.org/ Phew. Now then, here's my list. Character Request: Homer (with english sounds. the character was originally made by a spanish author, and came with spanish sound effects. An english version exists). Song Request: Skill (found in the first YouTube video). Song Recommendation: "Battle for Survival" (Digital Devil Saga 2) http://rapidshare.de/files/26569067/...vival.mp3.html Current Problems: I need help in sorting out the select screen. As you can see here... ![]() The ? boxes take up a bit of the character portraits. I want to cut out some of them to make room. The other problem is that the EVE screenpack has a very annoying choir sound that plays whenever a Round sign appears (Round 1, Round 2, etc). I'd like to know how to remove this sound or replace it with something better. Jam it back in, in the dark.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, I sort of broke MUGEN when using MWC to configure things. I wanted to get rid of that annoying choir when a round starts, so I deleted the round.snd files. Now I can only select a character but then get booted out when the round starts.
But it's probably for the best, since this torrent file should fix much of the headaches associated with MUGEN. EVE is already installed along with 500 characters and 200 stages. http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/53...ers_200_stages In the meantime, I'll start giving out notable characters that are either hard to find or worth adding to your MUGEN library. First up is Thor, of Marvel fame. ![]() ![]() Thor is, by far, the best original MUGEN creation. I know everyone loves that Dragon Claw character, and I haven't had a chance to play around with him, but I'm utterly impressed by the care and presentation put to Thor. His moves are awesome, yet he doesn't feel as cheap or overpowered as other MUGEN characters. He even gets his own ending! ![]() ![]() Very impressive. If there were more MUGEN customs like this the community would be thriving. Grab Thor here. http://rapidshare.de/files/26670082/Thor.rar.html EDIT: Post was made after Qwarky's post. Glad to see his selection screen is nice and neat, though it seems Ella is still a mystery. Anyway, unless I can undo the mistake I did, I'll be out of the MUGEN business for a few days (until the 500 character torrent finishes). I'll still update with characters and such.
There's nowhere I can't reach.

You people and your massive internet speeds...or maybe mine just sucks. This warrants a thread later...
Anyway, I'm only at 3%, with ETA at 2 days or so. It's going to take a while, but once it finishes I'll let you know what characters I'll still need.
![]() Anyway, here's another recommended character: The Alien Queen (Alien vs Predator). The Queen makes for a cool boss fight, though it's not nearly as difficult as the Metroid. Plus it comes with a fun minigame where you have to eliminate a certain amount of alien spawns. http://rapidshare.de/files/26676985/QUEEN.zip.html This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Believe me, I'd kill for Nintendo to allow some sort of MUGEN-inspired game for the Virtual Console, giving us the freedom to mix and match the classic games however we see fit. Unfortunately, I know this will never happen, due to licensing issues. I wish there was a way where most of the companies would approve the idea, as long as the program wasn't used to create anything like nude characters (which honestly, isn't worth your time in MUGEN. Sexy Mai isn't quite sexy).
What does sound appealing is the possibility of a MUGEN-related program that would allow online gaming. Sure the fights would be uneven as people would likely used souped up DBZ or SF characters, but it would still be fun as hell. This is almost sewers worthy. http://www.mugenguild.net/~bane84/ Ryu, Tyson and Sora are decent customs, but the live characters are just sad. I like how the skinny guy tosses weights at you. :/
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7omK...enkai%20battle
Marvin had some cool moves but annoying sounds. Krusty was just plain scary, but Popeye was awesome overall. I want that Lion-O most of all, though. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Excellent. Thanks for figuring out. Too bad I broke my MUGEN before waiting for the solution. Oh well, if I leave the torrent on while I sleep it should finish by tommorow.
The character selection screen is another matter. I've seen some better ones posted in the Youtube videos, including the ability to sort your characters by categories (Capcom, SNK, Anime, etc). Any idea how to do that? Later on, I'll also want to implement more advanced features, like setting an end-boss (or a random list of bosses), minigames (there's a Duck Hunt one going around), character text (characters from DBZMugen have spanish text) and so forth. How ya doing, buddy? |
Well, my MUGEN torrent finished a few hours ago, and the wait was well worth it. Everything comes fully installed, with significant improvements.
![]() This version ditches the awful round choir (thank god) and replaces it with exactly what I wanted; the announcer and font of Capcom vs SNK 2. I find the commentary amusing enough to work for this insane crossover. ![]() The selection screen is also nicely organized, although I think they were exaggerating when they said 500 characters were included. That barely looks like 200, and there's still plenty missing, including the ones I had to search all over online to find (but then that's one of the perks of this thread). The characters included are mostly awesome (though some of the DBZ customs are a bit lame), including one pleasant surprise. ![]() Sweet. Just sweet. (although none of the transformers have many moves. still, it's the thought that counts) The other advantage of this torrent is that the AI difficulty is much easier on your sanity. Fights don't feel nearly as impossible (except for my match against Evil Ryu. Only someone of DBZ proportions could defeat that cheap bastard. That someone was Nightmare Broli, by the way). ![]() It really is amazing how well most of these sprites look together. Remind me again why they haven't made Street Fighter vs Guilty Gear yet? The torrent includes mp3s for each stage, though most are hit or miss. I love Room of Angel and Tender Sugar (SH4) as much as the next guy, but I certainly don't think of them as fighting music. ![]() This time, you can say he's compensating with that sword. He has some pretty cool moves though. But in short, I strongly recommend grabbing this torrent as soon as you can. It has all the awesomeness of MUGEN without much of the fuss. ![]() Finally, I don't know what godless being conjured up the following custom character, but I won't be sleeping tonight because of him. Spoiler:
FELIPE NO |
Most of the space on that torrent is likely toward the mp3's included. The character roster is pretty small compared to what seasoned MUGEN players have.
Here's the next recommended character, the arcade version of Super Saiyan Goku. There's tons of custom Goku characters out there, but this one, in my opinion, is the best Goku you can find. His sprite is large and well animated, and he has a cool assortment of moves that make him powerful but not cheap. If you're looking for DBZ characters, I strongly recommend to stick to the arcade sprites, even if they're few in number. http://rapidshare.de/files/26870582/goku.rar.html What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Maybe once I get tired of finding characters and stages, I'll provide my own link. At this rate it'll be a massive download. I've spent all day searching through japanese sites and such, and I've hit the motherload. KOS-MOS, Evil Karin, that guy from Bleach, Jedah, Q-Bee, Sol, Chipp, May (can't find Dizzy though), Apocalypse, Bishamon, Nakoruru, Rimururu, Cobra, Iron Man, etc.
I could just link you to all the sites I've found, but I'm afraid the increased bandwith might cause them to shut down their sites, like the previous MUGEN owners. I'll just continue to honor any requests (and hopefully you can help me with mine). I'm still looking for Homer, Spider-Man, Venom, and Dizzy. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Same here. The only problem I've had with the music is that sometimes the VS theme won't play. A couple of times the music wouldn't play in a certain stage. Something to do with acceleration I guess.
One problem that's more common is MUGEN resetting when it loads a stage that I personally set. I was certain I put everything correctly, but I still get an error message. Could it be a problem in the stage itself? Someone give stage this a try and tell me if it works for you. http://rapidshare.de/files/26928461/...avens.zip.html I also second any One Piece characters. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Bigworm is uploading it as we speak (grab part 1 in his latest post). The torrent was called "Mugen for Windos" (yes windows was spelled that way).
Does anyone know what to do when you want to put two characters with the same name? I've been trying to add Super Goku, but his folder reads as "goku", just like the other character I have (normal goku). I tried to change all the names in the folder to "Super Goku", but the character won't display. This is still something I'm trying to figure out; when you're adding a character in the .def file, where are you supposed to get the name from? The name of the folder, a certain file in the character folder? I'm still figuring it out. Why is Popeye so awesome in this game? ![]() This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
So whatever the name of the .def file of that character is must be the same when I put it on the select.def?
In this case, Super Goku's .def file name is ssjsongoku. So that's what I put in select.def? I'll try it. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
As I said before, many MUGEN sites closed down due to direct linking and such. But in order to spare my sanity from hosting characters, I'll start tossing sites. Here's a good one.
http://randomselect.i-xcell.com/ It was thanks to that site that, after many hours of searching, I finally managed to obtain Juggernaut. ![]() Still can't find Spider-Man though. ![]() Also, I was able to fix the characters with Bigworm's advice. The file that has the character info must have the same name as the character's .def file in order to work. Does that same rule apply to stages though? Some stages still won't display. Also, how do you add in minigames? I've found a couple like a Metal Slug minigame where you blow up a train, but how do you have the bonus stages appear in arcade mode? I was speaking idiomatically. |
I absolutely want that Spidey.
![]() As for Capcom characters, I mostly stick with my favorite variations, namely the ones from Alpha or Capcom vs SNK, along with any unique customs people have made (and by unique I mean something other than Evil Ryu, Ken, or Akuma. Far too many of those as is). I have very little experience with the KOF series, though, so anyone I add is new to me. It really is amazing how well the DBZ arcade crowd fit in with them, though. Also, I have an EX Ibuki (almost a completely different move-set. annoying if you're a master of the original) if you want. I'm pretty sure I've seen the original tossed around though (check that site I linked). It's going to be a long task to set in all the characters I've downloaded, and test them to make sure they work (some don't, like Roll). Then after that I want to arrange them so they won't be such a hassle to search through (DBZ guys in one bracket, Capcom in another, etc). It'll be worth it though; I'm seriously addicted to MUGEN. The japanese original characters (Zanguya, Karou) are just plain scary. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
And I take back what I said about Thor being the best custom character. Dragon Claw is so amazing, it almost takes my breath away. FELIPE NO |
I'm not sure how to fix your problem, but if it's any consolation my sound experience isn't 100% either. Sometimes the music in a stage will play too fast, and usually this crashes MUGEN as a result. I'm sure the solution for both of us has something to do with hardware acceleration, but I'm not sure how to do that.
You want Mega Man? You want lots of Mega Man? You can't handle Mega Man. http://www.powow.com/killer2468/muge...rs/megaman.htm http://ciberia.ya.com/calamixian/charsdb/lista.html Freaking awesome. Double Post: And here's a grab-bag of Guilty Gear characters (including Order Sol). http://www.newwavemugen.com/~ggslash/ What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

This is funny. I saw your lifebar on another forum a minute ago, and I was going to post about it here. Having you here makes things much easier, both for questions and my conscience.
Anyway, it's a pretty cool looking concept. If it's easy to install, do share. Also, I had to share this insanity with you. Where do people come up with this stuff? http://rapidshare.de/files/27382211/...Suika.lzh.html Most amazing jew boots |
The sizes vary, but they're basically as big as they were in their respective games. Colonel for example is pretty tiny, but General is freaking huge. As for Mega Man himself, stick with Megaman.exe (really cool custom) and MVC Mega Man, and Proto Man (a custom of MVC Mega Man. Very cool, but he lacks sound effects). The others aren't very appealing, plus they're mostly incomplete.
As for Naruto, there's a custom Naruto and Sasuke which are both big and well animated. The problem is they're both heavily overpowered to the point of being cheap, and their jutsus (especially Sasuke's) are extremely long. Fun to play as, but not to fight against. They're easy to find, but I'll upload them both later if you want. As for me, I could use more anime characters, such as Inuyasha (only found Sango) and Yusuke Yurameshi (found Hiei, Genkai, and Toguro). And if there happen to be Scryed characters, I'd like them too. They'd be perfect for MUGEN (Ryoho could be a custom JoJo character). And you'd think someone would've made some decent FF fighters by now, but I've yet to see them. I'm uploading this sad excuse for a Squall character just so you can point and laugh. http://rapidshare.de/files/27388999/squall.exe.html How ya doing, buddy? |
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Lowering the acceleration for the sound didn't seem to help. In fact it almost made it worse. As I said, MUGEN is crashing more and more during either before a round starts, or during round 2. Here's one of the messages I frequently get.
![]() The sound speeds up or gets distorted, which serves as a message for me. Therefore, I think the problem is that it's loading too fast. If you have any other ideas I could try, I'm all for them. Also, can anyone help identify a few of these characters? Spoiler:
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I can send you Spidey, and I have a crappy PS1 Hulk. The rest you listed would be available in the torrent I provided in the first page (and in BigWorm's link).
As for me, I want Homer Simpson. I've looked everywhere but haven't managed to find them. Also, the Guilty Gear characters I linked to last page are strange. They don't have .def files, but .png files. What's the deal? Will they still work, or will I have to look elsewhere? I still want Sol and Dizzy but I can't find either. I was speaking idiomatically. |
Goddamn, YES. Thank you man. Any characters you ever want, just say the word. I'll probably make up a list of all the characters I have once I put them all in, although that'll take a long while to finish. I also have to go back and remove any useless or uninteresting characters that I have. One example is Raziel (Soul Reaver), a beautiful custom sprite, but he has no moves whatsoever.
Oh, and regarding the site with the GG characters, I've been there before, but they lack the two characters I care most about, Sol and Dizzy. They do have a Sol there, but he's not a current version, so his movelist is limited. I want a GGXX Sol, but most especially Order Sol. And I just haven't been able to find Dizzy anywhere. Awesome, that spanish site has Kenshin. That almost fills my anime quota. Still looking for Inuyasha and Yusuke Yurameshi. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

![]() "If Superman fought Fred Flinstone, who would win?" "Uh, Superman would. Unless Barney came from behind and hit him with a kryptonite club or something." come on, you know where that's from right? FELIPE NO |
I'm still discovering new characters each day, so it'll be a while before I have a "final list". In the meantime, here's another cool site worth checking.
http://fanaticmugen.free.fr/index_eng.php They've got the Arcade Vegeta and King Piccolo. Awesome. The affiliates lead to other sites with some cool characters worth grabbing if you're a DBZ fan. Why are Superman's voice samples so horrible? ![]() How ya doing, buddy? |
Wow, where'd you get all those characters? I see quite a few I've yet to find, like Deadpool.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
