Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

The game is due out in a couple weeks, in both a regular and limited edition. The LE has a ridiculous amount of extras that more than justifies a second purchase.

http://metalgear.neoseeker.com/metal...nce_features_/

http://metalgear.neoseeker.com/metal...nce_features_/

http://metalgear.neoseeker.com/metal...nce_features_/

And reserving will net you Metal Gear Saga, a DVD that features cutscenes from all the MGS games, as a sort of movie summary.

I reserved the LE last week, but I was told that I wouldn't receive the Metal Gear Saga disc until the game comes out. Gamestop says they now have a policy of not giving out preorder bonuses before the game is out, as they claim customers would cancel their reserves after obtaining the free bonus. It makes sense, but it also sucks. I just hope they don't forget to include it when I purchase the LE.

So who's looking forward to this? What kind of name are you planning to use for the online game? I want to use something Kojima related, but I'm sure most of the MGS names and terms will be snatched up quickly. That said, I do have a clever name in mind, but I won't reveal it until the game is out.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

lol, you mispelled Subsistence.
Oh well, it's a dumb name anyway. ><

Anyway, right now I'm hoping just that when it comes time to pick up my copy that I'll be able to switch to the LE (assuming that they have any left). Otherwise, it looks like I'll be shopping around town for a copy.
I worried about that when I went to pre-order the game, but they asked if I wanted to reserve the standard or limited edition. I was glad I didn't have to tell them of the LE's existence.

Quote:
BTW, seeing as how this is still a PS2 only game, shouldn't this be in the Sony forums?
I thought about that, but the series hasn't been completely PS2 exclusive. I don't think it matters either way, but if the mods want to move it, so bet it.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

And that's what bugs me. They aren't enforcing that stupid rule hard enough. I worry that by the time I get the game, I'll get a stupid reply like "oops, sorry we're out of the Saga DVD, you should have checked with us earlier". They promise I'll get one with the game, but maybe I should go check...

Yeah, I picked up my copy Friday. Honestly, Kojima's even crazier then we thought if he really believed he could get away with something like that. I applaud his attempt to make MGS more mature, but this isn't the way to do it. It would garner more laughs than anything else. No matter what he says, a woman running around with one boob hanging out just doesn't make sense.

Anyway, the disc isn't so much a summary as it is a short interview for each game. It's short, but still worth watching. The highlight are the trailers found, including the highest possible resolution for MGS4, and a hilarious trailer for the online portion for MGS3 that I haven't seen (I can't wait to play that game).

I'm still skeptical about Kojima swearing that MGS4 will be the final tale in the series, and it contradicts earlier reports that it was supposed to be the beginning of a new series (possibly with Raiden as the lead).

Double Post:
Oh, any word on what the other DVD volumes will be about, and when they'll arrive?

Actually, speaking about the codec, has it been confirmed if the codec screens will load up faster? The most major problem I had with MGS3 was the lag every time you opened up the codec. It would take a good 5 seconds just to call someone, and then the dialogue skips a little when the person starts talking. I had to put it on HD Loader because I just couldn't stand it. I hope Subsistence fixed it.

How ya doing, buddy?

Excellent news. And how's the new camera? Would you say it's better or worse then the original viewpoint?

Looks like there's no widescreen or progressive scan. Bummer.

Still, it's awesome that Konami is giving us the MSX version of Metal Gear and not the NES port (which lacked the actual Metal Gear in the game), along with a new translation to boot. Take notes, Capcom.

You think that's something, I got my next EGM today. The game got two 10's and one 9.5. Very impressive, considering how they pretty much slammed every single other game in their review section (Onimusha 4 took it hard, I thought it was supposed to be good...). Metal Gear Acid 2 got a good score as well, but I'm still not sure when that one's coming out (and wasn't it supposed to include a new MGS4 trailer?).

evergreen, your avatar makes me ill. What the hell is it from? ><

I called today about Subsistence's availability, hoping they would receive the copies tommorow. The guy said they're on track for Wednesday though. I can't wait another day, I'm dying to try the online mode.

You'll need the PS2 Network Adaptor first of all. If you have a wireless router, you'll need an ethernet bridge. Linksys sells a wireless game adaptor, which I personally own.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...lance&n=172282

The only online game that requires the official PS2 HD is FFXI.

It does more then that, it stores the actual game. You also need it to install the expansions.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I might be wrong, but I could swear hearing that there are methods to install a USB harddrive to a slim PS2, enabling you to use FFXI. I haven't looked into it though, since I don't have to.

Doesn't Subsistence use the hard drive for something? Can't remember.

And Spatula, if you do give FFXI a hand, let me know. I'd be happy to put my lvl 75 knowledge to good use and show you around the world.

I checked my Gamestop as well, and they said they'll be receiving it tommorow. It's amazing how excited I am over a game I already played. The online mode is the first thing I'm firing up, and hopefully the name I have in mind won't be taken. Although it would be pretty sweet to be the first guy to register "Solid Snake", but no doubt that name's already been taken.

I share your concern. It should be alright though, since they were aware of the LE's existence from when I pre-ordered it.

Make sure to post your username once you log in. I'll reveal mine if it's available (hint: it's from a kojima game. not from MGS).

Yo....

And because the employer knows how much I love pre-order bonuses, he was cool enough to hold unto this limited art cel of Metal Gear Ac!d 2, just for me.

Just so you know, it's not the store that makes the buisness, it's the people who work there. So I'm fortunate to have some capable employers in my Gamestop.

First thing I did was fire up the online mode. The disc opens up with the online trailer found in the Saga disc (the one where all the players salute, among other things). The video quality is more compressed, but the sound is juiced up to compensate.

Anyway, creating an account and logging in was relatively painless. You pick a lobby to join in (everyone's huddles in the Snake lobby right now), then pick a game to join. I went with the quick jump option and engaged in a good hour of Snake vs Many, Red vs Blue, and Capture the Frog.

My thoughts? FANTASTIC.

The game is completely lag free, the third person camera is far superior to the old top/down view, and the amount of fun you can have is limitless. This game trumps SOCOM 3 in almost every way. The most welcome improvement is the size of the maps. Where SOCOM 3 was criticized for having areas that were too large, MGS's maps are sizable enough that it won't take you long to run into an opposing member. And even with respawn off, you can still have some fun running around as a ghost (complete with some creepy voiceovers). It doesn't seem you can do anything at all when you're a ghost, but it is fun to chase around a clueless enemy.

Groups consist of standard troops, followed by a team leader (who uses one of the main characters). The leaders have more life then the standard soldier, so they can be tricky to bring down. They also have the added bonus of voice taunts (Ocelot: "Thank you for showing me the joy of reloading!"). I've played a couple of leader characters, but I have no idea how to use the voice taunt. The manual is oddly devoid of any control info for the online game.

Another neat feature is the selection of music you can use during the gameplay. You can select music from MGS1 (including arranged music),MGS2, MGS3, and boss themes. You can even pick the Snake Eater theme used when you fight The Boss. The Volgin battle theme in particular makes for some AWESOME deathmatch music.

Unlike SOCOM 3, where I get hammered many of times by elite psychos, I did pretty well in my first playthrough of this game. There's a good balance here so it won't feel like you don't stand a chance against dedicated players (even though the leaders do have the life advantage). Even if you're getting pelted with bullets, you can quickly find cover and survive.

The only minor nitpicks I had where mostly techincal. For one, whenever I used voice chat, I got an echo of my own voice. I had the same problem with SOCOM 3, but I could disable it, while I've yet to find out how to do so here. Second, I got several "aborted by host" messages that kicked me out of the game. I assume this was manually done by whoever started the game, and not a techincal problem on my end.

Anyway, I can't praise the online mode enough. It's everything I hoped for. Getting CQC'd by Snake, then having him stay around my unconscious body (it seems rotating the right analog stick helps you recover) like I was of no concern, and then me getting revenge by CQC'ing him as Ocelot (complete with taunt)? Hell yeah.

Find me online as SNATCHER. It's the name I was aiming for from the start. It's a nice Kojima reference, it's easy to remember since it's similar to my GFF name, and it also sounds a little dirty.

Beware the Ocelot Unit.

Pretty sure you could only nab that cel if you pre-order/reserve MGA2 (thus making it a "pre-order bonus"), but the clerk let me have this just for getting MGS3:S.

I'm eagerly awaiting a GFF-set match.

If it's a competition of figures, I'm sure you'd win. The MGS2 set is all I have, although I'd love that uber expensive MGS3 Snake, with the removal camo and eyepatch.

Hint: Try a Capture the Frog match with just revolvers, and the camps are just mere inches apart (the MGS3 cabin). Watch the insanity ensue. You could go a whole hour just trying to win one round.

In situations like this, it's better to just knock down the enemy rather than kill him. It'll take him much longer to recover than from respawning.

I have a few online questions:

1. I've been getting the following notice the two times I've logged on so far.

Quote:
Cannot create game in the current network enviroment
(519:179)
Gamefaqs didn't give a solid answer, but the belief is that something needs to be configured in my ports. I'm not sure how to do that though.

2. Is there a way to increase the volume in my headset (I have the one that came with SOCOM)? All the music, yelling, and shooting drowns out the voices (though voice chat hasn't been used much so far; for a game like this it isn't too required).

3. Is there a way to disable the echo in my headset? It's annoying to hear my own voice whenever I talk.

4. Still not sure how to use the voice taunts on characters like Ocelot. I'd ask someone in the game, but I'm worried I wouldn't be able to hear their answer (see number 3).

I really hope the online mode gets updated. It'd be awesome to have new character skins added like Vamp (blood sucking CQC!), MGS2 Snake (with the far superior spin kick), Old Ocelot, etc.

Speaking of CQC, the very first thing that happened to me when I first got online was suffer the wrath of Raikov's crotch-grabbing attack. Seriously, it was like he was waiting for me.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

That's the one, alright. If I could get a good deal on it, I'd consider buying it myself. Or maybe I'll just wait for the MGS4 figure.

Also, I thought of the perfect edition to this game. In the vein of Snake vs Many, let's have a new mode:

Ninja vs Many

Imagine reliving the hallway massacre from Twin Snakes, as a group of soldiers try to bring down the steath-camo, bullet-deflecting Ninja. God that would so rock.

I'm pretty sure they let you create clans, so we could always make up a GFF clan. You could change your name also, I believe (I do like SNATCHER as it is, without inserting any abbreviations or anything).

After some help from a friend, I managed to enable myself to create my own games. So as a test run, I created a free for all Deathmatch with knives as the only weapon, and set it in the Lost City.

The result? Utter insanity as more and more people gradually jumped in and ran around the city, chasing one another with knives, trying to roll unto one another, or CQC each other to submission.

Many highlights occured. Me fighting off 3 people at once with nothing but my fists. Two guys rolling each other into unconsciousness. Me tossing someone with CQC, followed by a salute taunt. Said guy retailiates by tossing me back, then salutes himself. Then we both take a few steps back, knives ready, but make sure to salute each other before we run in.

Then by the last 5 minutes, things got crazy. Everyone decided to relocate to the center of the city street and just wail on each other. It was like a gangware. Then me and another guy knocked each other out, to which we frantically rotate the analog stick to see how recovers first. The loser is unfortunately stabbed to death as he lies on the floor. Incidentally, it seems a knife to the groin gives you an instant death.

Lots of hilarity, and it was just a test run. Shit, I love this game.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Grr, why is it I sometimes die immediately after I respawn, and it's listed as a suicide (snatcher kills snatcher). This happened like crazy in my last game. Why does this occur? Also, the last game I was in was very laggy (though other people were complaining about that too).

I wonder how you can search for people's names online (before you add them to your friend list)?

I never thought it would be a red case. I do wish I bought 2, after seeing those Ebay prices.

I had some great fun online today. I entered a Team Deathmatch in the city, playing against a really tough group of players. They tend to use the rooftops quite a bit, but I learned to adapt by hijaking one roof (killing the two snipers that were using it) and picking off their teammates one by one. Then one of the snipers I took out before tried to take back the roof, and attacked me from behind. I retailiated with a punch/kick combo that ended up knocking him right off the roof. Watching him fall to his death was just hilarious.

Does anyone know how much it takes to raise your rank? Right now I'm the lowest rating (Pig), which indicates that I'm prone to getting slaughtered a lot. Would I have to avoid getting killed to raise the rank, or is it all a matter of playtime?

I still haven't figured out how to:

1) Turn the volume up on my mic.

2) Turn off the echo of my own voice in the mic (really annoying).
