Final Fantasy XI Discussion

Although I use my PS2 to play this, I'm well aware that the majority are probably PC users, so the thread will go here.

Although I expect the thread to mostly center around information regarding the next expansion, I would like to use it to discuss the previous elements of the games (Zilart, Chains of Promathia, etc) as well. But first onto the latest news.

The third (and probably last) job has been revealed for the upcoming expansion; Puppetmaster.

Kind of looks like a Heartless, doesn't it? It's pretty neat. You can find the unveiling video here, along with the full trailer that occured during the Fan Festival.

http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/7...56/vids_1.html

Beware though; the level of geekery that occures in the room may be too much to bear. I was met with both laughter and embarrasment to hear all these dorks shouting like schoolgirls over all the new details. It was especially hilarious how everyone died down and gasped in shock when Odin appeared near the end.

Not that I completely blame them, as Odin and Cerberus do make for some neat new summons (or NPCs).

Also, one feature that has been widely been requested (me included) is being added as well; city raids.

http://1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3148683

This will be quite fun.

Anyway, I've hit quite a lucky streak in the game lately, as yesterday I managed to finish Divine Might. Anyone playing this game will tell you what an accomplishment that is, as it is the equivalent of fighting 5 Sephiroths at once. And if you're curious about my player info,

Name: Jorginus
Server: Midgardsormr
Job: DRK75/THF37
Missions: Zilart: Last Boss
COP: Complete
Rank: 9
Linkshell: LongBus, NeverGiveIn

So, discuss the game, post your player info, give your thoughts on the new additions, etc.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I hope the rest of your party has levels above 50, or the Shadowlord will make short work of you.

And I'm told that BLM and NIN are both going to be nerfed again, which is good considering the whoring of the former and the ignorance surrounding the latter. DRKs are pretty high up in the job food chain, but I would like a few new additions to make us even better. Warp would be a nice spell to have.

Square reveals FFXI Chocobo Circuit
Exclusive screens and information inside.
by The Milkman, 03/23/2006

Square Enix today revealed a glimpse of the new Chocobo Circuit feature from its upcoming Final Fantasy XI expansion, Treasures of Aht Urhgan, and it looks something like a cross between the pod-racer arenas from the recent Star Wars Episode I movie and the chocobo races from Final Fantasy VII.
While the first screens don't actually reflect any of this, Square has said that how you raise your bird will determine its size and shape, and ultimately its stats. By introducing your chocobo to a friend's bird, provided they are compatible and of the opposite sex, it's possible that you can even breed more chocobos as well.

Many questions still remain in regards to this new feature, which is among the most highly requested additions to FFXI. Where will you keep your chocobo (will players have individual instanced stables, similar to their mog houses)? How often can you breed? Where will you be able to sell chocobos? And most importantly, will you be able to ride your own chocobo around Vana'diel? What we do know is that players will have some time to get up to speed on taking care of their birds.

The Chocobo Circuit isn't scheduled to go live until later in the year (the Circuit will be patched in sometime in Fall it seems), giving chocobo-breeders at least a four month head start to get crackin' on their skill sets. It's uncertain as to whether FFXI will support a league, with rankings and the best chocobo racers (making it more competitive, like Ballista), but for now, just take a look at the screens we've collected and consider the possibilities.

Pretty neat, I just hope they can create a good balance, so players won't always get owned by the JP guy who spent millions of gil in pimping his Chocobo. I'm more interested in the armored Giants in that other pic. They look fun to fight.

I haven't been on FFXI for at least 2 weeks now. Metal Gear Online has taken up tons of time. The game is so fun it almost makes me forget about FFXI. I still want to get back on though, especially since I still have to beat the last Zilart boss.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Even if it was 2 months straight without sleep or work, there's no way he could "finish" this game, because it's impossible to finish. Unless he got every job at 75, synthesized every item, got every mission, got every rank in every nation, claimed every NM.....bottom line, it's impossible to finish.

And none of the final bosses (regular, ZM, CoP) even wear a hat. :/

I didn't even know such an item existed. Who the hell would want a stupid hat like that anyway?

When I wear an Abyssal Earring, I expect a bit of "ooh's and aah's". A Maat cap? "Too much time on your hands, dude."

I was speaking idiomatically.

I kind of hope the 360 version will draw in lots of new players. Yes, there's always the downside of more idiot players and rising AH prices, but it also means you'll find more people to help you with things.

For example, I'm currently on Bastok 9-1. Anyone in Midgard still need this? I might try to arrange a PT this Friday.

Has anyone purchased the expansion pack? I've had mine since yesterday, and spent both last night and tonight with my group exploring the new area. I've also unlocked 2 of the 3 jobs, and gave Puppetmaster a spin. The customization of the puppet has won me over, though Blue Mage has quite a bit of enticing spells.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Another good place is ffxionline.com. The midgar thread doesn't have much interaction though, but there's still plenty of other fun sections.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Final Fantasy is arguably the best fantasy-themed title in the history of gaming. Heck, you have to be more than special after being called "final" more than a dozen times. As a testament to that reputation, news have leaked out that a sequel to Final Fantasy XI is already in the works and will come out on next-gen platforms PS3 and Xbox 360, and will also be on Windows Vista formats.

Yep, Square Enix is already deep into preparation for the upcoming adventure of the Children of Vana'diel. Apart from the confirmation that it is indeed being developed, no further details on exactly what plot the upcoming game will follow (if it's a direct followup of the Vana'diel quests or not), who actually will be the people handling the project, and when it will be out (or at least the date when we can actually start to expect it).

As usual, speculations were abound on who exactly is shaping up the project. IGN thinks Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka and his team are still the crew manning the ship, given the said producer's previous announcement that they are currently working on another game (apart from FFXI).

We can all guess as much as we want but judging from the already-rich lore that surrounds the said franchise, it's hard to do anything wrong with it. But then again that strength may very well be the source of its weakness. We all know how touchy we are when it comes to well-established institution on any media (cough * Star Wars * cough). Sometimes, there are just expectations that can't be reached; not because the people doing it underachieved, but because the bars set were ridiculously high. Well we've been humbled before, we're dying to be again, bring it on Square Enix!

Update: Square Enix has just issued a statement denying that they are making the reported sequel. In the statement: "The Company did not make such an announcement and has not made any decisions resembling those detailed in the media report. As the Company announced in May 2005, it is currently developing an online title for next-generation platforms including game consoles and PCs; however, this title is being developed as a completely new MMORPG. We will disclose further details of this title, including platform compatibility, immediately after any relevant decisions are made."

Although they did mention that "In addition, the Company continuously plans to release expansion packs for Final Fantasy XI, available on PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Windows, as well as perform version updates." All hope isn't yet lost I guess...
So Square immediately shoots down the notion of an FFXI sequel as soon as it's mentioned. However, it's worth posting this anyway for the simple fact that Square Enix denies absolutely everything until it's made official. That being said, there will most likely be a new MMORPG for the PS3 that isn't necessarily a sequel to FFXI.

But regardless, I do hope for at least a port of FFXI for PS3, not just for the graphical upgrade, but also so I can transfer my existing stats and items from the PS2 version. I've worked hard on acquiring many items in this game, and it'll take a couple more years to obtain the insanely rare stuff (Ragnarok, holy crap). I don't want it to all be in vain if I have to start from scratch with the next game. FFXI has more than enough content to last a person's entire lifetime. And that thought makes it pretty frightening to continue playing.

How ya doing, buddy?
