I'll just start by saying I'll be very disappointed if Resident Evil Wii is yet another remake of the first game (which looks that way from the mansion shot). Jam it back in, in the dark. |
We're saying it's too expensive because EA claimed the price would be $170. Sure, $250 is still more than half the PS3's price, but it's still a bit of a letdown.
We're still lacking the complete facts, especially on the release date, but based on the current news there's good and bad news all around. Price The good: It's cheap The bad: Not as cheap as EA claimed. Game The good: Comes with a free game. The bad: Doesn't sound to be a very long game (online play would make up for it, though) Remote The good: Extra remote is cheap. The bad: Nunchuck must be bought seperately. more bad: Batteries!? I thought the remote was re-chargable. ![]() Virtual Console The good: Wide selection from the start, more coming from big name developers (square you say?) The bad: The prices. $5 for NES games, $8 for SNES, and $10 for N64? You can buy most of the actual games for less. Heck you can download them for free using the most basic emulator you can find. I liked my idea that for every purchase of a Wii game you're entitled to a free download relating to that series (ie buy Mario Galaxy, get a free download of 3 or so Mario games). What would help justify the price is if they added some good bonus content with each game, like artwork, commercials, and such. Release Date The good: uh, it's this year? The bad: It'll really suck if it's in December, but it's still a bit of a letdown if it's November. It was heavily rumored for a while that we'd get it in October, but instead we'll have to wait slightly longer for it than the PS3. Anyway, as it currently stands, I'm undecided on what I'll be getting first, the Wii or PS3. I guess TGS will be the deciding factor, but that won't stop me from enjoying the newest info. EDIT:

I have some small concerns with the functionality of the remote. Did anyone else notice in the official videos that the cursor looked a bit jittery when they were navigating the avatar menu? It could've just been that the guy controlling it wasn't keeping his arm still enough, but I do worry that the remote's sensitivity could get damaged very easily. It goes without saying that Nintendo creates more durable hardware than Sony, but I still imagine that the remote would be the most likely part of the system to become faulty out of the box.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Like I said before, if each game offered something extra, like online mutiplayer or a bonus gallery of artwork, commercials, and such, then it'd be worth the price. Otherwise the free alternative, bugs aside, still wins out. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I'm not going to get into a thing where the same people who laughed it up that the PS3 wouldn't come with an HDMI cable are now downplaying Nintendo's similar scenario with only providing AV cables.
What I will get into is the latest information concerning that BS pre-order. The word around is that this promotion is only for the Gamestops in Hawaii, and will very likely not happen in the US. http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/16/ru...p-reservation/ I was speaking idiomatically. |
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
I know there's a limit to what Wii can do graphically, but I hope it's far better than that shot. That's not just ugly, that's N64 ugly. ![]() FELIPE NO |
The whole deal with the component cables is indeed bullshit, but I at least felt content that I wouldn't have to partake in that nonsense since I had a component cable for the GC. And since everything else is compatible with the Wii, the cables should be no different, right?
Spoiler:
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I wasn't aware there was a USB cable for the DS, nor what it does. But I doubt it's as essential as a component cable is for higher-end TV users. The PS3 is compatible with PS2 component cables along with any kind of HDMI cable, so it truly sucks that Nintendo didn't bother to follow suit.
This turns that $250 console into a $280 one (a waste of $30 that could've gone towards Zelda or any other game). Jam it back in, in the dark. |
There's a pretty big difference from spending $7-$10 to $30. Also, I only plan to buy at least one more controller for my sister to use, and that won't be for a while. It isn't as big a priority as getting your system to look its best on day one, which is now much more difficult than it should have been (online availability).

'Sup, South Florida. The GS closest to me might have their kiosk set up by tommorow, too. I'll stop over if that's the case.
Turning in keys is a good idea, but there could always be some sneaky kids turning in a fake pair of keys or just copies. But they'll most likely have a camera pointed squarely on the display as well. There shouldn't be any problems monitoring anyone handling the remote, unlike a huge store like Best Buy where it can be easy to slip out. Most amazing jew boots |
Though I haven't seen it, I read that the Zelda portion of the Gamespot video is too embarassing to watch. They take nearly an hour just on the first tutorial mini-quest, and they refer to Link as "Zelda". What the hell, that's a mistake you make when you're 7, not as a gaming "professional".
Also, I'm actually a bit more worried about the Wii being faulty out of the box over PS3. One of their remotes broke as soon as they started using it. ![]() I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I just got back from my local Gamestop, and managed to have some hands-on with the Wii.
The store apparently had a broken AC, evidiced by the circling fans and MASSIVE FREAKING HEAT. Still, I was determined to try out the Wii. Sure enough, there was a kiosk near the entrance, to the right of a Gamecube kiosk. Funny enough, no one was playing it, or paying any real attention to it. Perhaps they weren't aware that the clerk has to hand you the remote. I turned in my keys and was handed the remote. The first thing I was curious about ever since I saw pics was how big the actuall remote was, especially when held by my giant gorilla hands. I had an idea, but it turns out it was much smaller than I had anticipated. (following pics were taken on my motorolla razr. crappy quality ahead. no, my arm isn't that brown) ![]() It's pretty small; I could fit the whole thing between my middle finger and thumb. The material is about the same as previous Nintendo controllers, although the battery lid on the back might get a bit annoying after extended plays. As with other kiosks, Excitetruck was on display. I first asked if there were other choices available (Wii Sports, Zelda), but no go. It took me a couple of minutes to figure out the button placement ("Why isn't it responding? Oh wait, that's a '2', not a 'Z'). Having read previous reports, I held the remote correctly while controlling the trucks. The truck controls well enough, steering left and right as you turn the remote, but it wasn't quite precise enough for me. I tried adjusting with different tactics, but I could only improve things a little. I physically moved my shoulders left to right, which helped a little, but I actually found the controls a bit better when steering with just one hand (balancing the remote with my hand in the middle). Basically, I did the best I could, but it wasn't anything special. I tried the 3 different modes; the first one required me to go through rings in a set time, but I always ran out of time after the 2nd or 3rd ring. The next mode had me try to collect symbols in the air, but no matter how steady I kept the truck, I always ended up under the symbol. The third mode was the best, where I had to search for other trucks and crash into them. Visually, the draw distance was very nice, along with the terrain, but ultimately the claims of "Gamecube 1.5" hold true. In the end, while I know people like Infernal are real excited for this game, I'd rather wait until they make a racer with more precise wiimote controls. I had more fun messing around with the Wii Menu. ![]() I liked how the remote gave a small rumble with every movement I made. While navigating the icons isn't as precise as pointing your finger, it wasn't hard to keep the laser steady while I made my choices. The photo browser, weather channel and other features required an online connection, which of course wasn't available yet, so I messed around with the Mii channel, creating a character close to my likeness. ![]() The end result was a bit too emo looking though. There was also a "Mii Parade" option, but I wasn't sure what that did. One feature I thought was cool though was a message that tells you how much time you put into your games each day. So in the end, Excitetruck didn't wow me, but using the remote itself was fun, and I hope developers make full use of its potential. On a whim I asked if it was too late to reserve the system, and I was given a yes. It's tempting to nab it on launch, but I think it's best if I put it off until Christmas or shortly after. I was speaking idiomatically. |
I'd like to hear how the Virtual Console works when you got the time. Are there any extras included with each game, or is it pretty much bare bones? Also, I heard that for 16:9 TVs, the game image is stretched and you have to manually fix it yourself.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Well, they better do something to make the fees more appealing then, because it looks like emulation is already starting on the PS3. No one's going to shell out 5 bucks for Donkey Kong if they can play the same game on another system. Well, assuming you have both systems anyway.
FELIPE NO |
So when are we getting some system impressions?
Also scotty, props to your sig. Excellent work. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
Nice impressions so far, though I guess there isn't much to say about the Wii that you didn't already read. That said, I do have a few questions.
1. What exactly where the cons reported in the Zelda review? I've avoided reading any of them on account that I'd like to jump into the game blind. 2. How are Gamecube games on the Wii? Any compatibility problems or resolution boosts? Does the wiimote work on the games, or do you need a GC controller? 3. So it's a sensor, not the TV itself, that reads your remote's actions, right? Does it matter where the sensor is located (on top of the TV?), or not really? 4. Is it even possible to be a supporter of both Nintendo and Sony without showing blood-pissing hatred to one of the companies? Anyone else sick of this whole choosing-sides bullshit that's been plaguing the gaming community the past year? How ya doing, buddy? |
Thanks. And to add to 2, can you still enable progressive scan when starting up the Gamecube game (by pressing B)?
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
This was probably answered already, but are all Wii games displayed on 16:9 on widescreen TV's? What about GC games that didn't have widescreen originally?
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Way to take half a year implementing a feature that should've been right out of the box, and something the other two systems are already doing. "Oh well that seems a reasonable time. I'm not interested in online play unless Nintendo does it, because they'll do it perfectly." actual bullshit spouted by the usual fanboys I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
File this under "rumor", but I'm still going to bitch about the horrendous possibility.
It's the goddamn Gamecube and N64 all over again. Now Sony has nothing to worry about; by the time the heavy hitters for Wii come along, there will be at least over 20 PS3 games out. There's already about 5 notable titles in March alone. The Wii simply should not have this excuse; if it's less graphic-heavy than its competitors and easier to develop, there should be more games available. Now for some possible Grubuttals I was speaking idiomatically.

Alright, this Wii shortage is very annoying. I've spent every day for the last two weeks calling two Circuit City's and four Gamestops, and they never have any in stock, nor do they have any idea when they'll receive any more.
Has there been any indication at all when Nintendo is going to step up the production? One Gamestop employee told me that he heard the possibility of Wiis becoming more available within the next two weeks, but that's been it. How ya doing, buddy? |
I wonder if the production boost will be enough so that I wouldn't have to pester CC every day in the morning, and just casually walk in and grab a system. The situation with me is that I'm trying to make use of the "$40 off a $200 purchase" coupon before it ends (Jan 31). That's almost like getting Zelda for free.

I have a $20 gift card from Best Buy as an xmas gift. I was saving it for Zelda, but I don't mind using it for a Wii either. I guess I can try calling them tommorow, but I'm not holding my breath. Most amazing jew boots |
Wow, I take back what I said. Nintendo has no problem reporting the ulgy side of news (suicide bombers, sniper shots, etc).
I also found the following piece of news so amusing, given the context of it all, that I just had to take a shot of it. Spoiler:
I mean, that's just bizzare. :/ Oh and of course there's a 5 page story on the success of the Wii, but I won't hold that against them. Cool feature, overall. I'll be using it often. Jam it back in, in the dark.
