Contrary to what Sony says, next-gen does not start when they say so. It starts when Kojima says so. Also, Blast Factor is good fun based on the short demo, and I have intentions to buy the full game if I don't end up making a huge profit on Ebay (anything less than $1k isn't worth selling). I wouldn't mind adding people to my Friends List, but like you said there's so few of us right now.
PSN Name: SOLDIER. I really wanted to pick something different for each game, but it seems the name you choose for the PS Store carries over to whatever game you play. A question about the upscaling/downscaling fiasco going on. Keep in mind I have a CRT that does 1080i but not 720p. For Blu Ray movies, do I get them at 1080i? For NBA '07, I noticed it was a bit more hi-res than previous games. Does the 1080p signal mean that I go as far as 1080i instead of backwards like Resistence? Can the downscaling problem really be addressed by a firmware update, or is it something hardware related and thus impossible to fix? Would the simplest solution be to output all future games with 1080i in addition to the other resolution options? There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I made Cobalt here my little guinea pig and tried out the Friend feature. I sent him a message, in which I then got an indicator that he had both received and sent his own message while I was playing Resistence. After adding each other, I then sent him a message to join up in the game (a real pain with the small text and lack of keyboard). We had some good fun in Deathmatch, including one bit where we both meleed' each other to death.
The highlight, though, was that I found this one spot high up in one of the towers, and started picking off people one after another, earning a multiple kills medal. I shot up all the way to Third place with that method. Also, it's funny how a lot of people don't know that you have to shake the controller to put yourself out when on fire. Those are the kind of controller gimmicks I want to see later on. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Yeah, I prefer mixed matches of human against Chimera (makes it easier to discern who's your ally and your enemy). The Chimera have a big advantage though with that rage ability; you could mow down a whole squad of humans if you're quick enough.
Anyone know what people are using for voice chat in the game? Since it seems to support all kinds of unofficial headsets, I wonder which one is the best to use. Most amazing jew boots |
Can you link to the headset you use? If it's cheap and wireless I might grab it or something similar.

Well the next few months are ports of excellent games (FEAR, Half Life 2, Ninja Gaiden, Oblivion). This might not satisfy people who played them already, but good news for me; I've never played any. I'm looking forward to all of them.

They said spring for Ninja Gaiden, Oblivion is in December I think along with FEAR, and I think they said first quarter of 2007 for Half-Life 2. I think I'm most interested in Oblivion at the moment due to its sheer length.

Yeah, I'm not sure what leveling up does either. I know you can unlock new skins, but not entirely sure what they are or how to unlock them. I saw someone using a black guy but that's about it. :/
Also Katze I outranked you in our last match (4th place baby). ![]() How ya doing, buddy? |
Damn that's nasty. I was starting to think most of the systems would be working just fine given the lack of complaints. That just makes me appreciate my own console more.
just don't decide to quit on me, okay. Any updates on upcoming game releases? Will we be getting any of the aforementioned ports this year? There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Anyway, looks like Linux and some other OS is available to install to the PS3. Downloads and instructions can be found here. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=129437 It sounds simple enough to install, but I'm wondering what I'll get out of doing that right now. Aside from future homebrew emulators, I don't exactly know what Linux can do for my PS3. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
Seems there are already a few bonuses to installing all that OS stuff to PS3. PS1 games can be upscaled to 480p, audio CDs are played in perfect quality, and youtube works much faster too. I'll still probably wait until the next couple of firmware updates, to save me some of the extra work in installing everything.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Man, I'm going to need a serious crash course on Linux and its respective applications. I've never touched the OS before, but people are already using some cool features with it on the PS3. So far there's an NES emulator, a MAME emulator, Firefox, a faster youtube, PS1 games in 480p, PS2 games in 480p (aspect ratio is incorrect though), and whatever the heck this is.
Tivo on PS3?:
I'd love to get all this working, but it sounds like you have to format your HD on the PS3. I think I'll wait until I get a larger capacity HD for cheap before messing around with this (unless you can format the 20gb one without losing your savedata). I was speaking idiomatically. |
Saw the list earlier today. None of those really interest me aside from Silent Bomber, which was awesome (and I only played the demo). I updated my PSP but I can't get remote play to work. It said in the online manual that I'm supposed to configure the remote play option in my PS3 (under network settings) but it doesn't show up. Is this for 60gb systems only or am I overlooking something?
I have plenty more questions, even though very few of us own the system. Hopefully some of them can get answered. 1. PS3 will only accept Mpeg-4 videos for now, right? Isn't that the format for I-pods? Wouldn't that mean that the videos would be really compressed? 2. What's the best program that'll let you convert videos to mpeg-4? 3. What's the filesize limit in sending attatchments to friends? I tried to send a picture but got a message saying I was over the limit. 4. Will a USB adaptor for standard PC Hard drives work? I've read mixed results on this. 5. What is currently the best and cheapest way to share media on the PS3? Pro Duo Cards (via PSP)? Flash Drives? HD via USB? 6. How many levels is Blast Factor, and how long is that $7.99 price going to last? And finally, Sony responds to the downscaling fiasco.
How ya doing, buddy? |
Yeah, I saw your name on the high scores. I'm currently waiting it out just a little longer until I grow bored with Resistence. Then I can play BF while waiting for the long stretch until May (when the ports start coming). March has Motorstorm, Lair and Heavently Sword (which, according to the Sony Prophet, will "look like Advent Children when finished"; of course I don't believe that, but it'll be a feat if it looks even half as good as the movie).
So the whole remote play thing can only be done with Wi-fi? Is it possible to implement this feature with wireless routers via (yet again) a firmware update?
heh, Tifa:
I guess it's a good thing I haven't seen Narnia yet. That'll be a definite purchase for me. FELIPE NO

Dumb question for someone still new to HDTVs, but isn't 1080i better than 720p, at least for movies?
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
So the PS3 won't recharge your sixaxis controller while it's on standby mode. I learned this myself.
What I didn't know was that you could also use your PC to recharge the controller. Kind of neat. So did anyone who missed out on the first shipment manage to secure a system on the second? I'm not sure if 100k shipped this week like Sony promised, but there were shipments out (and gone) today. Sounds like the downscaling problem will be solved by a firmware update, which is a good sign. The question is when it'll be ready (hopefully by the next update around december). Oh, and... http://www.redkawa.com/ This'll be the first thing I'm trying out once I get to go online again. How ya doing, buddy?

I can't wait to try it myself. I got the DSL working on my PCs, but it seems I have to add some extra settings to my PS3. I'm using Comcast fast-access DSL (DSL goes through the cable line now). Any idea what I'm supposed to change so I can go online with my PS3?
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Hopefully I'll figure it out within the hour, then we can have ourselves a long-delayed online match.
I was wondering, in what format are the mini-games saved (when you purchase them)? If they're saved in the HD, can they be moved around with the appropriate storage (like a 1gb flash drive)? If so, then wouldn't you theoretically be able to download those games for free if they were hosted on some infamous torrent sites? Or is there a layer of protection to prevent this? Okay, I'm back online. The bluetooth headset I bought the other day works like a charm too (you don't have to hold a button like with SOCOM, you just chat), although there was one occasion where it seemed to interfere with my controller, causing a slight lag. So how does this File Server program work? Do I need a Wi-Fi connection like with the PSP's Remote Play? I installed it but so far I'm getting 404 errors. EDIT: Nevermind, turns out I had to type the address from the File Server unto the PS3. It works, but it seems you can't save anything from the Internet to the PS3's HD, and have to use some other storage media. That pretty much defeats the purpose when you can just transfer files directly with a flash drive and whatnot. In the meantime, I have a new question; I purchased a wireless keyboard the other day, but it turns out it uses a PS/2 connection (even though the guy told me it was USB, ass). I have a PS/2 to USB adaptor, but I need a USB male-to-male cable to hook it up, which I ordered online. Once I wait for that, the question I have is whether the PS3 will recognize it or not. How ya doing, buddy?

Okay, I see now. First you convert the video with Videora, then you use File Server to download that video to your PS3 (the HD will only save formats it currently supports).
I managed to pull this off, although I do see some compression on the videos. I believe I have to configure the settings (does higher bitrate=less compression?). Spoiler:
Can anyone tell me which settings to configure for maximum quality? I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
Apparently, the PS3's DVD playback is going to get much, much better in the coming update(s).
I was speaking idiomatically. |
GT:HD being cancelled and instead released as a free demo (because in the end, that's what it is; a demo for GT5) is the smartest decision Sony's made this year. Now you can actually appreciate it as a visual showpiece for what lies ahead, instead of that microtransaction crap.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Did the release date for Oblivion change? Today's Wal-Mart ad had it listed along with NBA '07, but it didn't have an actual date.

The PS1 games are available now in the online store. There's Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 2, Syphon Filter, and a couple of others I didn't bother remembering. No Jumping Flash, no Silent Bomber. Disappointing, and the other games aren't worth my time (even though they're cheap). Also, I've experienced PS3 in 1080p. Expect a journal entry on the subject soon. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
