The best PC game (and in my opinion, the best game period) that I've ever played is System Shock 2. I've never played a game that let me play as myself quite in the same way that that game did. That mixed with the atmosphere, the great voice acting (at least for those characters that really mattered), the way the story would actually change slightly to make sense depending on your actions, and the persistent and deadly villain around you at all times.... mmm, man. It's the only game I've ever played that once I beat, I had to start a new game right away just so I could keep playing it.
Since the rights situation with the game is so messy, we may never see another true sequel, but if Bioshock is as good as it looks like it might be, we just might have another franchise to follow that'll be just as brilliantly crafted. Here's to hoping.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
