Shoe Situation

In my parents' home, we sometimes take off our shoes. Most of the main level is tile, so my parents tend to keep their shoes on, but I'm used to taking them off. In my apartment we all follow Asian rules and the shoes always come off. I feel the initial inclination to take off shoes no matter whose house I go into, but I always follow the lead of the host, and if they're already in the house when I arrive I try to ask before I go either way. Many Americans get weirded out if you take your shoes off automatically, so it's best to find out first.
