Everytime this kind of anime where some guy gets sucked into another world/universe is done, it's not unusual for them to get a homesick feeling. Seems like Saito didn't really give a damn about his family/friends back home at all.

I kinda got the feeling that all of that stuff didn't really matter to him. I'm sure the biggest thing he missed was his laptop and the internet (he takes his laptop with him in the novel, though).
I'm sure there's more info about him and everything else in the novels.
