Just a business strategy I bet. Sell a bunch of white DSLs, wait until some interest is lost, come out with two different blues, repeat with black. In Japan they know it doesn't matter since the DS will always be hyped. They can toss as many colours at them at once and they'll always continue to sell.

At least they fixed the lower volume settings. On my old DS if you turned it down low enough the music would sound terrible and distorted. Now I can actually turn it down without any problems.

Nope. I use mine quite often and have had it since launch. No problems with the hinge. I wouldn't doubt it's just kids who don't know how to properly handle it. It's probably not even wide-spread.
