I've done this before:
Leave my yard waste out in the summer heat for weeks, and then put it up by the curb for the trash collectors to pick up. Typically by that time the grass in there has already started decomposing and turning into compost, but its SO RANK and HORRID that even going near it will turn your sinuses against you.
