Same deal with Myth: The Fallen Lords. 1 and 2 were done in-house, while the 3rd was picked up by a 3rd party. But those are all nit-picking crap. Yes, Bungie did make the Marathon series whose backstory spawned in incredible following. However, many of the brains behind that game and its story no longer work for Bungie. Greg Krikpatrick, who wrote the story for the original Marathon and who founded Double Aught--the creator's of Marathon Infinity's single player scenario, is long gone. Alexander Seriopian left to found Wide Load software picking up Matt Soell. Doug Zartman works in Microsoft's PR dept. somewhere. I think Jason Jones and Robert McLees are really the only two from the old Marathon days who still work at Bungie. So I really wouldn't put too much faith in spinning the Halo story into anything like what evolved out of Marathon. Most amazing jew boots |
In summary, an insane omniscient artificial intelligence called Durandal drags around a security officer (the player)--who also happens to be an elite Mjolnir cybernetic soldier--in the hopes of finding the secret to escaping the eventual closure of the universe and thus achieving immortality.
There's a lot more to it, including two other AIs, a slaver alien race (the primary enemy), an enslaved alien race and its rich history, and an ancient God-like race known as the Jjaro. The story is revealed through interaction with various terminals which appear in the game. How ya doing, buddy? |
Having the Master Chief die and be reincarnated as the Marathon Marine is probably one of the stupidest directions the story could possibly take. The timelines don't line up at all. Halo takes place in the year 2552. Marathon takes place in the year 2794 --- 322 years after the colony ship Marathon is launched from Earth with the marine on board.
Two different story arcs. Two different universes. Parallel themes. Attempting to directly connect the two is foolish at best. Shit, why not throw Myth and Myth II in there as well. Shall we have Soulblighter make a cameo at the end of Halo 3? Most amazing jew boots |
My point is that the Marathon was launched in 2472. The Marathon Marine was on board at the time of the launch, in stasis (along with the others). Halo takes place in 2552. Trying to force John 117 into the Marathon Marine would take sheer absurdity.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
The story is told through the interaction with terminals, so to get a sense of how things are revealed as one plays the game, follow the terminal text links in the left-hand sidebar and read them in order. Most amazing jew boots |
I've gathered that Bungie is shooting for a 10km viewable distance in-game, eschewing a traditional 'skybox' for real atmospheric layers and particle effects. It makes one wonder....are the mountains and clouds in the background static images, or produced by the game engine? What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
