There's actually no
definite reason why they do it, actually.
There has been no
definitive study to link cellphones (or any other electronic device,) to avionic interference. The best that's been shown is that it's
marginally possible that they could interfere, but remember, the key word here is "marginal."
I think it's entirely bullshit, the claims they make. If someone's cellphone in their pocket can "interfere" with their equipment, well, uh, what about all the radio waves of all different frequencies flying about
outside the aircraft? There's a
lot more interference outside of the aircraft than on the inside.
In the end, there's more evidence showing that it's just for various companies to save money than it is about anyone's safety.
