As a Western New Yorker, (ignore all the stuff from my brother's mouth, for he does not count!) I can say this: they're used to it. When you live near the lakes, you accept the fact that you're going to get
pounded by lake effect snow. Don't like it? Get away from the lakes!
But from the looks of it (at least, if you base what's happening on Lake Erie to Lake Ontario,) the lakes are freezing up pretty quickly because of this cold shot, so once they get entirely frozen, a lot of the snow just stops.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
