VLC has terrible support for more advanced subtitling formats, which include packing fonts into the container, (VLC uses it's specified font and thats it,) text placement, text color, text effects and the like.

This is to be said for VLC on every platform.

And because of that, I stopped recommending VLC and would just rather suggest installing DefilerPak, CCCP or the individual filters.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Softsubs are also better because if there's any errors, you can fix them yourself, rather than waiting for the group who encoded the video to fix it and reecode it for a second release.
