I don't think this is a codec issue, becuase last time I used Windows Media Player (a long time ago). I seem to recall it telling me that I have a missing codec if I had a missing codec. What I would recommend is to ditch WMP and get VLC instead, or KMplayer (Korean Media Player, not KDE mplayer). Both of them are standalone media players that have codecs built in, so they should solve your problems.

I've never used WinAVI MP4 Converter so I can't help you there.

It would also be helpful if you posted the contents of the error message and explain in greater detail what went wrong.

That WMP error message was just the generic windows one for "this program has crashed", so at this point I really doubt its a codec issue, because WMP shouldn't crash just because it dosn't have the right codec. To make sure it isn't a codec issue, I suggest that you download gspot and use it on the avi file in question to make sure you have all of proper codecs installed.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Right now I can't think of a reason WMP won't start for you. Have you scanned your system for viruses/malware recently? That might have something to do with it.

The only other suggestion I have for you now is to try to reinstall WMP, or upgrade if you're using an outdated version of WMP (you could also try out some of the other players I mentioned above or Windows Media Player Classic).

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
