Gojira Headed To DVD In September!

Quote:
On September 5, 2006, Classic Media will release Gojira (Godzilla): The Original Japanese Masterpiece on DVD. The two disc set will feature not only the original 1954 Japanese-language film, but also its English re-release, which was edited and retitled Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The two-disc set will be available for the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of $21.98.
Awesome indeed. God knows how long I've waited for a DVD to hit of the original Japanese version of Godzilla. The butchered American edit with Raymond Burr slapped in was just atrocious, and completely took away from the original feel of the film.

And hell, my wallet's happy...now I don't need to shell out a grand for the crazy box set from japan.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Yes I did. And the same company who released it theatrically (though it was a very limited release) is the one bringing it to DVD.

I'm just tired of seeing all those cheap-o $5 DVDs of the original Godzilla you see in the bargain bins at Wal-Mart which are the Raymond Burr version. It's about time the 1954 Godzilla gets some good DVD treatment here stateside.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Perhaps it's cheaper because this DVD is from Classic Media, and not Sony, who is the company who has been releaseing the Millenium Series movies on DVD as of late, as well as some from the Showa (correct me if I'm wrong there) Series.

I guess since it's a smaller company, and the money that's put into creating this DVD for these guys isn't the same amount as it is for Sony, and as a result the DVD would be cheaper.

A shame too, as I'd rather have this kind of treatment done to all the Godzilla movies, and Sony is doing a so-so job with the movies they have in their posession. Just imagine, if Godzilla vs. Megalon gets this kind of royal treatment!! Oh hell yea!!

On a more serious note though, I'd love to see Godzilla vs. Biollante get some nice DVD loving soon.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Thanks for the info, Interrobang. I didn't realize that Miramax has the rights for it. Considering that the movies that they do release on DVD usually fall victim to crappy transfers, it would be a shame for that movie.

I also saw on Amazon that on the same day as the Gojira release, a box set called Godzilla Classic Collector's Edition - The Official U.S. & Japanese film Versions (a 6 DVD set) will be released from Classic Media as well.

Here's what it contains:
  • "Godzilla Raids Again" ("Gojira no gyakush?") (1955)
  • "Godzilla vs. Mothra" ("Mosura tai Gojira") (1964)
  • "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster" ("San daikaij?: Chikyu saidai no kessen" (1964)
  • "Godzilla vs. Monster Zero" ("Kaij? daisenso") (1965)
  • "Godzilla's Revenge" ("Gojira-Minira-Gabara: Oru kaij? daishingeki") (1969)
  • "Terror of Mechagodzilla" ("Mekagojira no gyakushu") (1975)

And a list of features:
  • High definition source masters
  • Un-edited Japanese film versions with english subtitles
  • Original trailers
  • Photo still galleries

Good news, and if the Gojira DVD pans out to be of good quality, then we should be in for a treat with this set.

Damn.

It seems like Amazon has removed the page for Godzilla Classic Collector's Edition - The Official U.S. & Japanese film Versions. I also can't seem to find it on any other website.

Was it some sort of cruel tease? Or perhaps more movies are being added to the set...could it be my dream of seeing Jet Jaguar on DVD is becoming a reality?

Anyone have any word on why this set has mysteriously vanished?

I was speaking idiomatically.

Just saw this on IGN:

Quote:
On November 7, 2006, Classic Media will release Godzilla Raids Again and Mothra vs. Godzilla on DVD. The follow-ups to the original epic look to be a dream come true for Godzilla fans, promising tons of destruction around every corner.

Godzilla Raids Again, the sequel to the original masterpiece in sci-fi/horror, features two newcomers into battle: a near clone of Godzilla himself, and the devastating dinosaur, Anguirus. Mothra vs. Godzilla, known as Godzilla vs. The Thing in the United States, focuses on the epic battle against the gigantic moth himself, Mothra. They will both be available for the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of $19.98.
Not the Nov. 6 date that Lundberg stated, so I guess either the box set is no longer a reality, or they're just releasing the movies individually as well. Here's hoping that the box set will still see the light of day sometime soon, as I was loving the set of movies they had on there.
