Square Enix responds to FFXIII @ E3 rumour AKA "Not very likely, mate".
Quote:
"While there have been numerous rumors about Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix has never released any information about the title. The recent online article stating that the title will be exclusive for PlayStation 3 and shown at E3 is not based on any official information obtained by us. I hope readers will remember April Fool's day is tomorrow and many Print and Online outlets pull pranks ever year, before they get their hopes crushed by a joke."

Doesn't really prove anything though. It's not like EGM's Rumour Mill is a single solid source of legit information because if it were then it wouldn't be the "Rumour" Mill.

As for FFXIII in general, all I can hope for is that Tetsuya Nomura as lead character designer stays as far away from the project as possible. After 5 games and 1 film I'm fed up of the all the lead characters looking alike and the whole as much leather/buckles/zippers look.

I guess that's why FFXII looks like a breath of fresh air in comparison to the Kitase/Nomura FF titles but still, I'm not keen to go back to that look so soon.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Square-Enix just announced FFXIII for the PS3. Exclusive to the console too.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Trailer. Looked like a CG Pre-rendered video but it was all real-time. Female main character, action packed. Motomu Toriyama is the director.

They're also doing a mobile game based on FFXIII that'll be multiplayer.

Quote:
2:02 Final announcement! For PS3! E3 is so damn exciting sometimes. What is it?!

FINAL FANTASY XIII. FINAL FANTASY XIII. They pulled a serious bait-and-switch on us. Sword-and-gun-wielding heroine who looks like Yuna, flipping her way around a high-tech, futuristic world. No idea what it was until the end when that NAME popped up. Yoshinori Kitase directing! This is the guy behind all the best ones--VI, VIII, VIII, X. Be still my heart.

2:08 Sorry, I jumped the gun--Mr. Kitase was merely presenting. Motomu Toriyama will direct the game. And apparently FFXIII isn't the only game coming out of this universe--there's a, uh, mobile game too. Oh.

More details coming!

Of course the smart thing would be to wait until some screens and footage come up. Yep, that would be the smart thing....
Really? I figured the sales for FFVII & VIII would say otherwise?

Some more on FFXIII.

Quote:
2:20 The conference draws to a close with a comment from Hashimoto that this should demonstrate Square Enix's commitment to next-generation gaming, but that it's "only the beginning." A final movie showcases the name Final Fantasy XIII, as if each new installment in this mega-enormous series is now a franchise unto itself.

Finally, Mr. Wada has retaken the stage. "How did that grab you?" Laughter and applause. Some more commentary on SE's commitment to supporting the next gen. Speaks more about the "synergy between products" being a proven formula with Compilation of FFVII. Looks like they're taking the same tack with FFXIII.

Some more info on FFXIII (can't type fast enough!): The game was begun by the FFX team for PS2, but the team was then derailed to make last year's FFVIII PS3 tech demo. They were so happy with the hardware, they decided to then shift development to the new platform. Apparently the game will run on the "White Engine" and will feature the most technologically advanced civilization ever featured in a Final Fantasy. The storyline will center on "those who resist the world." Yeah, okay.

The whole trailer was supposed to be real-time which those screenshots are from but somehow I doubt it.

Correction, all of the trailer was real-time save for one scene.

Wow. The FFXIII Play Arts figure looks really good with plenty of detail and the usual Koto articulation. Thanks for the scans Hantei.

.....but where did you find them or the others for that matter? I don't suppose you've ran across anything more about the Play Arts FFXII figures aside from the 2 low res snaps of Vaan at E3?

I was speaking idiomatically.

Anyway, I checked the original source of the images and found the image hosting site they used. The guy uploaded a few other scans.

Anyway regarding the figure, it's definitely looking top notch. It really seems like with each series they release more improvements are made. It's really apparent when you compare the FF7AC and FF8 figures. They really improved the articulation with the FF8 line (Squall being the best of that one).

Heh, and while I'm on the topic of figures (off topic, I know), some images of the FFX Play Arts sprung up in my daily surfing. They're planned for a June 25th release in Japan, and should be hitting these shores in August, as according to Diamond Comics (the distributor).

Awesome stuff. Finally a look at some of the airships and vehicles from Koto's Mechanical line which I hope they'll expand to include the Ragnarok from FFVIII and Ifrit, Alexander etc from FFXII and so on.

I gather the FFX figures are re-releases but since I missed them last time I'll now be able to pick them up.

Good stuff Hantei. Maybe you should have a seperate thread for all the Final Fantasy/RPG related merchendise?

GameSpot's description for the new FFXIII trailer:
http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/rpg/fina...ml?sid=6158270
Quote:
In the previous trailer, though, her enemies were exclusively human; now, she's shown fighting against a number of monsters, as well.

In the first instance, the enemy that appears is a massive demon, looking somewhat like the Balrog from the Lord of the Rings movies, save that it glows blue and swings a massive sword that leaves energy trails behind it. The guards in the large city that's under assault manage to summon their own defenses, as they activate a blue energy field through which leap a few battle wolves, which quickly coalesce from pure energy into solid matter to take on the monster. The woman isn't bereft of tricks of her own, however; immediately preceding the precious few seconds of battle footage (which appear to be identical to the E3 trailer), she drops a grenade on a group of enemies and then slices through it with her sword, causing them all to go flying.

Afterwards, a bit of footage appears in which the woman directly engages another large monster, which somewhat reveals the Ifrit summon from Final Fantasy X, but in a bit of a bluish hue. This didn't appear to be battle footage, though, as everything moved around a bit too much for it to be anything other than a cutscene.

Lastly, the brief trailer is wound down by the appearance of a mechanized, flying manta ray-esque creature, which landed on one of the railway trains that are seen zooming through these trailers, and then ground it to a halt by pressing it against the track. It stayed there for a moment, causing the woman to leap up from the train and see what all the fuss was about. As in the previous trailer, this one ended as she held her sword out toward the beast and posed for the camera.

I know they said they will have a playable demo out for this game by the end of the year, but do you think they will have a gameplay video at the SE party?
If they do chances are it'll be behind another closed theatre like last year's event.

The TGS trailer also confirms that the game is PS3 exclusive and even in this week's Famitsu Nomura confirms that both FFXIII and Versus are PS3 exclusive because it's more efficient for the team to focus on one console rather than others even if it'll disappoint some.
