Metal Gear Online v2
![]() Platform: Playstation 3 Release: June 12th 2008 OFFICIAL SITE What is MGO? Metal Gear Online is the online multliplayer component of MGS4 that carries over the same backdrop and control system of the single player game to original online maps and game modes, with future downloadable expansion packs adding additional maps, characters, and other features after the game's release. Among the new components this time around are battles featuring up to 16 players, and the SOP System. MGO is included with MGS4 as a "Starter Pack" which is a starter in name only since you'll be able to get the full MGO gameplay experience from this pack alone that will also feature 5 playable maps. SOP System & Gameplay Elements ![]() The SOP System allows you to visually share information among your squad by "linking-up" with your teammates. Information like your teammates' positions, status, and even who they're engaging with will all be provided to you in real-time. It also works through walls, letting you identify individuals by their digital silhouette. ![]() MGO also has some RPG-elements to it too similiar to other shooters given you'll be able to choose from a variety skills to utilise and level up to improve these skills and learn more like CQC, aiming, hacking etc. An example with Hacking is that with experiences you'll be able to "hack" the other teams' SOP and gather all their information and location to ultimately disable them. You can also customise your character's physical appearance along with his gear and items. Aside from the usual game modes like Team Deathmatch or Capture The Flag there will also be some new ones too such as the confirmed "Snake Vs Everyone" mode where one player assumes the role of Snake and then 2 teams get tasked in hunting him down. The more times a team finds and elminates Snake makes them the victor. ___________________________________ MGO Premiere Beta A beta for MGO kicks off soon in North America and Europe. To get into the beta in NA you need to preorder MGS4 at either EBgames/GameStop or a recognised retailer like Best Buy where you'll receive the Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2 DVD. The DVD itself is unimportant but inside the case is a slip of paper that contains a unique code to get into the beta. You can also obtain the Saga DVD by purchasing it from Best Buy's website for just $5.00: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots DVD Offer - PlayStation 3 The beta will be available for download from the relaunched Playstation Store on April 17th with service to commence on April 21st giving a 4 day window for everyone to download the beta. Service runs for 2 weeks from April 21st to May 5th with some skills available and 2 maps to play with: Gronznyj Grad ![]() Blood Bath ![]() EUROPE FOLKS! No preorder or purchase is necessary to get into the beta. All you'll need to do is just download the beta from the PS Store on April 17th and you'll be all set!!! ![]() BREAK OUT! ___________________________________ So with the MGO beta looming I figured I'd try giving a thread a try since the last thread for MGO on PS2 turned out pretty well so hopefully this one turns out just as well or fail. So basically use this thread for the usual like to discuss the beta, stats, ranking and hooking up with fellow GFFers for matches or clans. I know we've got a PSN ID thread stickied but if anyone is taking part in the beta or the final version then you can feel free to throw your ID in here and I'll add it to the OP as it'll be easier to let others know if you're playing MGO and to add. My ID is DGSimo and I've got some GFFers on my list so have at it. GFF User - MGO ID eprox1 - bluebomber Gechmir - stromwelle Greeder - greederkun Hantei - Aux Inhert - Inhert Miles - kilometers Shenlon - Anizeke Simo - DGSimo SouthJag - southjag Strife - metalgearstrife Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]()

Premiere Beta Available For Download! Well it looks our PSN IDs aren't necessary anyway given you've got to register for Konami ID when first booting up the beta. Of course you can get a headstart by getting one now: https://id.konami.net/login.do The site is kind of screwy at the moment given it buckles under heavy traffic, like right now, but I managed to get a Konami ID earlier which is lone_wolf. So post your Konami game codes and I'll throw 'em up into the OP. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
I downloaded the beta this morning and just a word of warning its a test of patience though. Getting the actual beta isn't so bad but when you first boot it up you're prompted download a 400MB patch via P2P or http that takes forever. At least I'm all set now and its just a matter of waiting until Monday. ![]() I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]()

Christ, I'm just glad I got mine sorted when I did. I had no problems with the Konami ID site since I set up my gamer code a couple of days ago and downloading the beta and installing the patch only took an hour which at the time I thought was quite a wait given how fast the actual beta took.
I just hope when it comes to playing the actual thing it won't completely fucktard itself over and fail like the installation process has been for most. I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
I updated the OP with epox and Hantei's Konami IDs since they seem to be the only ones who have managed to get hooked up. Both the update server and Konami ID site seem to be in full working order so now would be the ideal time to get everything sorted and ready should the beta be here tomorrow night. I mentioned this to Hantei but apparently a small portion of the beta was on show at the NY Comic Con this weekend and theres been a lot of positive impressions. Best bit of info to come out is that the Konami reps at the show have mentioned repeatedly that we may end up getting 3 maps to play with instead of the announced 2! What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]() |
![]() Sorry over the confusion with the start time as I didn't know the frickin' thing was region restricted. Hopefully then in just over 2 hours time I'll be able to get into the beta....but given the issues that the Japanese and Euro gamers had I probably won't be able get a good crack at it until tomorrow. FELIPE NO ![]() |
![]() All in all I'm speechless. I mean I never had a problem getting the patch or setting up a Konami ID but the clusterfuck with the servers just seems inexcusable to me given they've been preparing and promoting this beta test for months. Probably wasn't the best idea to hand out free codes even after giving out the Saga DVDs but out of all the problems I thought I might face with beta, logging in wasn't one of them. Of course I fully expect the same shit to happen this weekend. Thankfully we finally get the COD4 map pack this Thursday if all else fails... ![]() What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() |
https://id.konami.net/ Also for better (or worse) they've removed the beta from the UK PS Store meaning nobody else can download and participate in the beta unless you already grabbed it last weekend, at least in Europe. Probably won't change much but we'll see how things run on Friday.... Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
Speaking of which I've updated the OP with all of Game IDs posted thus far so it'll make it easier to hook up with fellow GFFers. Also according to the online manual in order to make a clan of your own you need to put in at least 5 hours and be of level 2 or higher so if anyone of us reaches that mark then feel free to create a GFF clan, or whatever title that refers GamingForce...we could come up for one for those interested. The benefits of a GFF clan too is that we don't have to be playing together but the clan roster will keep you updated and let you know who is playing and which lobby they are in should you want to join with a fellow GFF member during play.
There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
Beta doesn't kick off until tomorrow night at 11pm GMT for those in the UK. For folks in the US it'll begin 12am PST and 3am EST.
Also there's another software update from 1.01 to 1.02....but don't worry the file is small and only takes 5-10 minutes tops. According to the release its a patch for "how the client connects to the server" so hopefully no fuck ups will occur this weekend. How ya doing, buddy? ![]()

Well I played a few hours yesterday, including some rounds with Hantei, and then some more just now and I'm pretty addicted too. It did take me awhile to get into it given my main online fix for the last 7-8 months has been COD4 so it took some getting used to while everyone else kept kicking my ass.
![]() Controls were an issue at the start too given that its not even standard MGS stuff since they've redone the controls for the single player campaign for MGS4 and then carried everything over to MGO so I struggled for abit. My one and main complaint though is the aiming and hit detection. It seems that even with Auto Aim off trying to hit somebody inside the reticle is bloody hard given most your shots whizz by the guy and the recoil in FPS mode is ridiculous but then again thats probably because I'm too used to COD. Overall though I try and use manual aim when they're off a ways and then switch to Auto Aim for close quarters which has been a winning combination so far. I guess for any GFFers wanting to hook up we got to get a shit together all over again given you can't find players with either their PSN IDs or Konami Gamer IDs but only with specific names that you gave your character. So mine is DGSimo the same as my PSN to make things easier. If any GFFers want to link up for a game in the next 5 hours then post ahead, that way we can just create a GamingForce specific room and password just for GFFers. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |
Alright then if all goes well I'll have a GFF lobby in the next 2 hours at 3pm EST then. Folks can drop me a line in MGO for the server info and password and I'll post it here too just for good measure.
I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
I don't really use the knife though but it is overpowered given it can knock you completely out with 1 stun and then its 1 hit kill.
![]() This shit is too addicting though. I try and leave but end up coming back for more and went from level 1 to level 3 in a matter of a couple of hours. Shit, I even managed to get a clan going for Team GFF which Hantei has managed to hook up with so again any fellow GFFers wanting to play just post away your MGO name and we'll roll. I already updated the OP with mine and Hantei's names so hopefully we can this locked down and I won't have to re-edit the names again... What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? ![]()

I tried getting some sleep last night but ended up getting up and playing until 6am this morning. ![]() I linked up a couple of buddies to piss around in a CQC only lobby and then Capture the KEROTEN, discovered how to do co-op moves link boosting a buddy to a higher level and being able to pick up and flip through the magazines if you come across them.... I just need to train and figure out how you CQC>Disarm an enemy which lets you take their weapon and if a teammate runs dry then you can give them that extra weapon with 1 magazine of ammo. FELIPE NO ![]() |
Played on and off all day today and had some intense matches and not so great ones too. The SOP DESTAB is a fucking beast...that is if you can get some support given you've got to plant the thing in the enemies base and main spawn point but the effect is worth it. Also in order to disarm an enemy in CQC you need to have CQC skill mastered to lvl 3. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() |
OH SHIT! New Mode and Map in EU now, US hopefully tomorrow. Snake Vs Everyone mode and a Middle Eastern map.
The Legendary Hero returns. ![]() Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
Today was perhaps my best time with beta thus far as everything just "clicked". Headshots didn't seem like an impossible chore and I was topping TDM results with more headshots that overall kills and thus leveled up pretty quickly. My main gripe was the targeting but taking time to learn and work with the reticle and now I'm having a major blast. One of the key enjoyments of MGO though is tactical team work or basically a team that communicates and works well which is why I had some outstanding games this afternoon when I hooked up with a buddy (who before was kicking my ass in most TDM games and is a vet of MGO1) and I dropped down in the middle of a game on the new middle eastern map where I was pitted against my buddy but I managed to fucking kick some ass including his which led to his sarcastic remark as to whether or not it was me playing since I was doing so good. Bastard. Speaking of the new map and such I tried out Sneaking mode while playing with MGS: TUS guys and got to play as Snake twice. Freakin' awesome stuff considering you get full use out of the OCTOCAMO which is great as well as the use of the Solid Eye and Threat Ring. Basic premise of Sneaking mode is one top player is automatically assumed the role of Snake while the rest of the players are split up into red and blue teams. Its then up to the 2 teams to defeat each other with the most kills winning, ala TDM, while trying to stop the player as Snake from capturing 3 dogtags from the enemy. So you've basically got these 2 teams going at it as you sneak your way all over the map to quietly take out whoever you can and to get those tags. One event had me just sitting there in a cardboard box waiting for the right time before some hapless dope ran by and sprang out to CQC and nab my second tag. ![]() I think of my favorite moments with the beta came at my own expense when my buddy and I were against each other on TDM on Blood Bath. He got me in a CQC hold in the underground tunnel was choking me out when 2 of my team mates dropped down right in front of him. I thought I was saved but all he simply did was use me as human shield to pop one guy in the head with his pistol and then throw me to the ground as he ran forward to CQC the other guy and shoot him in the head before finishing off my unconcious body... There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() |
I'm surprised that even with GTA4 out that the traffic for the beta has still remained pretty consistent with over 1000+ players on all the servers. Finally got to try the MkII today...man its pretty cool whizzing around and using the stealth camo but its damn hard to zap someone unless they are completely still. One funny incident though had 2 guys shooting it out with one using the Stun Knife to knock the other guy out, he then knelt down to finish the job until I came up behind him as the MkII and zapped his ass out. There wasn't much else I could really do but the guy who got hit with the knife managed to wake up before his attacker and finish him.
Played a few games with Hantei too including a GamingForce specific room and Sneaking mode. I wasn't aware that having the camo index at 99% made you completely invisible to the opposition which is why I waited for Hantei and shot him in the head with the Mosin from the shadows...Of course he got his revenge the next round. The one thing I was trying to do was the hold up but seems like you've got to be pretty close in order to perfom it.I love Midtown Maelstrom though just because it offers alot of variety in terms of weaving in out of buildings and finding strategic spots to jumping in dumpsters and waiting for an unsuspecting soldier to wander by and then capped in the head. It also looks really good and even at points the framerate jumps to a butter smooth 60fps. That and I also like the little details like the dust accumulating on the camera or screen if you stand still and then dropping when you move. Overall I love the beta and I can't really think of too much that needs to be addressed other than possibly more skills and customisation options for your character. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
Yeah I knew that and overall OCTOCAMO is fun to mess around with. We'll we have to do more of those 1v1 matches since that was a good round so I'll lock it out with a password next time so nobody else can interrupt. All in all though it would be nice if we could get a GFF game at least once before the beta ends.
I'm almost at Asslt.Rifle lvl 3 while also using CQC lvl2 since I really want to get it to lvl 3 so I can disarm folks... Most amazing jew boots ![]() |
I just haven't been on lately given work has been kicking my ass this week with 55hrs leaving no love for MGO. =/ I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
