Well after some weeks of speculation and rumours SCEE just announced the 40GB PS3 and pricedrop starting at 299GBP and 349GBP for the 60GB that'll come into effect in the UK and Europe October 10th. The downside is that the 40GB unit doesn't have backwards compatibility with PS2 titles as well as only 2 USB ports instead of 4 and no multi-memory card slot:

New PLAYSTATION®3 Model to Take Holiday Season by Storm

Aggressively priced hardware and a terrific software line-up make for an unbeatable combination
New 40GB PS3 at €399

London, 5 October 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced details of its exciting new PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) model that will launch throughout the SCEE territories on 10th October 2007 at the highly attractive price of €399.

Providing an incredibly appealing entry point to the world of High Definition gaming and entertainment for the holiday season, the new PS3 brings the next generation of interactive home entertainment to homes all across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia.

Along with an ever expanding line-up of PS3 titles (a total of 65 titles tracking across all genres by Christmas), the new PS3 is equipped with a 40GB HDD and includes all the features central to the High Definition entertainment experience; true next generation gameplay, stunning High Definition Blu-ray Disc™ movies, SIXAXIS™ wireless controller, Wi-Fi and HDMI connectivity, all powered by the Cell Broadband Engine™, the digital heart of PS3.

As with the 60GB PS3, the new PS3 features upgradeable firmware allowing new features and functionality to be added to the system as time progresses. A recent firmware update, for example, enabled PS3 to upscale DVD’s played on the system to full 1080P High Definition.

The introduction of the new PS3 has been determined following user feedback from thousands of existing PS3 owners as well as research into future potential PS3 owners. The new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port.

The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas).

The existing Starter Pack*, comprising a 60GB PS3 with extensive backwards compatibility, an additional SIXAXIS wireless controller and two first party titles will be reduced in price to €499. Remaining on sale while stocks last, the 60GB model represents outstanding value for the keen gamer wishing to upgrade to the High Definition capabilities of PS3.

“The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next generation of PS3 owners,” said David Reeves, President of SCEE. “It has allowed us to deliver an extremely advanced, yet incredibly affordable High Definition gaming and entertainment system, configured to the needs of the next generation of European PS3 owners. PS3 has always been the device of choice for the discerning gamer and entertainment seeker, and the new PS3 is more than ever the perfect High Definition entertainment system.

*In the UK and Ireland, the Starter Pack will be replaced by a separate in-store promotion on the 60GB PS3.

I think the US is supposed to be getting the same kind of deal with the 40GB unit and a $100 pricedrop at the end of the month with the rumoured 3 starter packs including the "Movie" pack to tie in Spider-Man 3's release on Blu-Ray.

I suppose this just means I'll need to get a 60gig unit as fast as possible.

How ya doing, buddy?

Looks like the 40GB units will be touching down in the US and ready for sale October 30th:
Spoiler:

Seems like the original rumour of a Spider-Man 3 Blu-Ray pack seems true given the partial listing title. Regardless of the 40GB unit, I'm hoping that within the next week or 2 I'll have my hands on a 60GB model after all the crap I've ponied up on eBay.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Things are way more crazy over here. They sell the 40 GB version for 399€, while the 60 GB version still costs 599€. This is so bizarre.
Odd. SCEE's press release stated that the 60GB was going to be slashed in price too to 499€ when the 40GB unit was released. I know that in the UK it got cut down to 349.99GBP and Amazon has some pretty good deals going down for it too.

I think I'm going to go ahead and get the 60GB from Wal*Mart given their special for the 60GB includes a free Blu-Ray remote as well as a free game from a list that includes Resistence, Motorstorm, Lair and Heavenly Sword to name a few.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Well I finally got my 60gig unit on Monday which I've been playing around with these past 2 days and all in all I'm glad I dropped the cash.

Problem though: I can't get it to connect online. I'm no good at all this technical whatchamacallits and going by the "Easy" and "Automatic" setup yielded no success with just a "IP looking time out". I'm a Comcast high speed internet user and without a router and my modem in the other room I basically unplugged the ethernet cable between my PC and modem and then used a 25ft ethernet cable to connect the PS3 to the modem in the PC's place.

So errr...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Strife is right. The modem assigns an IP each time it is turned on. So if you change the item without resetting it's not going to assign an IP to the PS3.

So you have to unplug it for 2-5minutes and then plug the modem back in with the ethernet cable already inserted in the desired device. Only way around this is to get a router which allows you to have both hooked up at the same time with no switching.
Well this worked and the connection test for the IP and connection was a success but it didn't last long and from then out the system wouldn't even recognise an ethernet cable was plugged in and any attempt to retry the process left me at stage 1 again in trying to get an IP address...

I'll give it another try later and if it still doesn't work then I guess I'll look into getting a router and see if that helps.

Well I managed to finally get my PS3 online last night thanks to a router a friend at work let me borrow, of course he only tells me today that it's actually broken and only connects 1 device after I asked why my PC wasn't getting online...

Anyways as long as it works until I get my own router then I'm good especially with the Uncharted demo this Thursday. So all last night I basically pissed around setting up my PSN account and downloading various demos for the likes of Heavenly Sword, John Woo's Stranglehold and Ratchet & Clank. I just wish my local video store had more PS3 games instead of the 6 titles they have so then that way I wouldn't have to head out to the next town over to rent from Blockbuster.

Has anyone seen the new PS3 commercials? Seems like there was 1 shown during every commercial break on FOX and during the Heroes reruns on G4.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

so update 2.20 was just release a while ago.
Ability to transfer playlist of music and photos to the psp is now available. Also being able to listen to ps3 music thru the psp or something like that.
Theres also BD-live and "resume play" feature for blueray and dvd's even if the disc is ejected.
divx files over 2gb are now supported as well and divx subtitles are now usable. Although i'm not sure if it means .str files becuase i was unable to make any of them work, but a few unsopported divx movies are now viewable. Now sure what else there is, it seems as tho i won't make much use from this update ~_~

anyways i have a question of reccomendation. I am goin to preorder gta4 and mgs4 but i would like to buy a game that is currently available and i was looking into getting some online action. So question is, warhawk or call of duty 4? or maybe another popular online game which i am unaware about. cod4 seems more popular but warhawk has a bundle with a bluetooth headset which i would need.
Well its more of a case of what genre would you prefer: FPS or Aerial Shooter? I mean I'd recommend COD4 as I've never played Warhawk and given that you're preordering MGS4 and GTA4 it may be more to your liking. Either way I doubt you can go wrong with either choice.

Can't say I ever had a problem with the current store but the redesign does look nice. I noticed that the US store has a different layout which seems a tad better than how they have the features listed on the UK one:
Spoiler:

Hot damn! I just remembered the Dual Shock 3 is out in 2 weeks too. Nice.

Just a heads up as Sony has bumped up the release of the Dual Shock 3 by a week.

Amazon has it listed for release on April 4th but they already shipped mine and it should be here actually on Friday. Pretty nice considering I got mine when they dropped it to $49.99 and with no tax and free 2 day shipping I ain't complaining.

Jam it back in, in the dark.
