I've had a PowerBook G4 for almost 3 years now and I've had no degradation in quality. I don't know that there's any big difference in the LCD technology used from iBook to PowerBook, but I would guess that any noticeable quality issues are isolated cases and not widespread.
You can always add AppleCare to a product even if you've let it expire, so even if you do have problems, it shouldn't cost a whole lot to get fixed (comparatively against having to purchase a whole new laptop, at least).
Jam it back in, in the dark.
