I dont know, I see this as a bit pointless. If you want to play SO2 on your PSP you can just play the PSX version of it on there. Whether you do it through illegal or legal means, you can play SO2 right now on your PSP.

So why buy a port when I can play it for free or buy it through Sony to play it on my PSP?
The dim hope that they'll actually translate the game this time, instead of giving us a script that only vaguely resembles English? And maybe some real voice acting this time? I'd pay for that.

The Star Ocean 2 they're referring to here doesn't look like the PS1 game, though. I think it's a brand-new spinoff from the first game.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Huh. That is Star Ocean 2, with a brand new subtitle. Should be interesting to see what they do with the remake, since apparently the intent is to make both entries feel like "completely new games". This is unquestionably a good thing for us; it means that if they port the new SO2 here, they'd have no choice but to do a new translation with new voice acting.

Maybe they'll give Ernest a reason to exist beyond pickpocketing those two Battle Suits off him while they're at it.

In any event, here's hoping Squeenix actually ports these two remakes to the US, 'cause I think they have my money now. The original Star Ocean's battle system was not a whole lot of fun, to the point that I never bothered trying to complete it, so I'd love to give that a shot as well.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I also heard they might be adding in the Saturn-only extras to Symphony. There was an additional section to the castle, and Richter and Maria were playable from the start.

I kind of wonder if there might be more connections between Star Ocean 1 and 2 added in these remakes. SO2 is going to be heavily rewritten to make it "fresh", so it's not unbelievable that there might be more cameos or intertwined plot elements added in.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I wasn't thrilled with them chopping the deployable roster down to three people, myself. It's an oversimplification trend in RPGs I really despise, and sort of limits your options. You have more of a margin of error with more active party members, which is important if player control has to be relinquished to AI control. It stings less when the AI does something retarded as long as I have three other warm bodies active, y'know?

Hey, it'd be wild if they actually let you bring all 8 party members into battle in the remakes. The PSPs small screen might not be too accomodating, but a fellow can dream.

2 threads doesn't count as "as many as possible"

I'm just not interested in spending a lot of money on one series... which is often the issue if a developer doesn't flat out say what system *insert game here* is going to be on.

But I'd like to tack on that it would be odd getting a Star Ocean game thats not at the end of or near the end of a consoles life cycle... because every other SO game has been released near the end of each of the consoles they blessed life spans.
Um, that's not true for either Star Ocean 2 or 3.

I'm also not sure how console ambiguity makes someone spend a lot of money on a series. Platform jumping perhaps... but if they just haven't said where the game is going, it's not like you have to buy up every game system in advance just to make sure.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I don't think I notice any difference in graphics but just the artwork so far. Claude and Rena look alright but Production I.G. could've done much better. So far SO1 is the only remake that I see. Maybe they polished up the sprites and hooked a few things up like they did with VP:Lenneth so that should be a good thing. I hope to see extras later.
The graphics will definitely be the same, in style if nothing else. The preview screenshots of SO1 pretty much confirmed that they brought back SO2's sprite artist to do both games. Fine by me, I thought he or she did a pretty good job.

I think I preferred the original character art better, myself. Well, except for Celine. Possibly the worst costume design I have ever seen.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

I lay my interest more on SO1 since I never played it. And if I wanted to play SO2 that badly, I'll just convert the ps1 iso to eboot, etc (which was done 4months ago). All there's to it is voice acting, unknown extra features, and the anime cutscenes. There's lots psp games out there to get. The game is only great to have around as a collection to my psp library (4 games that is..;p ). Anyway, the psp was worth owning from the beginning.
I believe the director is on record as saying these are both going to be complete remakes, SO2 included. Even if it wasn't, SO2 with a competent localization would be enough of a selling point, I'd think.

Uh oh, they're not recycling the backgrounds from the original SO2 are they? I'm having bad flashbacks to those caves littered with the skeletons of giants. Kind of spoils the effect when the dungeon dressings aren't to scale.

Still don't like the new art. SO1's main character's eyes are staring into my soul.

Better not happen >=/. That was one of its best points in the game. I mean it aint that bad either. But I would love it if Square Enix fixed a few bugs in the game and have an option where you choose to play the original or the tweaked version. I always loved using Claude's Head Splitter attack but when you level it up too much, you end up in another world where you are either going from the ceiling or all the way in the bottom and the only way to get out of it was for you to die OR wait for the other morons to kill off the boss. That glitch sucked but its not like you need the move throughout the whole game. I would usually have Ripper Blast/Mirror Slice or Twin Slash to take a few easy bosses.
I thought that was just a repeatable bug? I would think the playtesters would have noticed a primary attack power eventually becoming brokenly useless like that, even if it should be obsolete by that point. Then again, you'd also think QA would have noticed the translators forgot to swap out Rena's Tractor Beam voice clip for the English version.

Yeah, you'd never know I really am a fan of the game from all the griping I do. I give Tri-Ace a little leeway what with it being an early gen Playstation game, but suffice to say there's many reasons I'm happy to see this being sold as a remake. Especially with Squeenix's localization resources.

I can't see! ;_;

But in all seriousness, I might want to actually be able to use Precis this time around. I doubt they'd be able to call all these guys back in for additional lines anyway. I strongly suspect it was like Shining Force 3 where they just got all the playtesters to do the dub or something. Heck, what if they change (or translate differently) all the spell names?

How ya doing, buddy?

it would be nice if it were actually a remake and not a direct port of the PS1 game with practically the same sprites and graphics
Well, no reason to do more work than is necessary - although how many times do people have to point to the quotes from the director himself saying that SO2 is going to be heavily remade so that it's like a new game to all the people who played it before? They'll have to draw a few new graphics at least for the new playable charcters being added.

Besides which, you talk like the old graphics were somehow bad. I for one was quite happy to see that they brought the same sprite artist back to redo SO1. He does good work.

That information was proven to be false. Any further discussion of it (the RPG Fan misinformation) will be deleted.
Wow, that's hardcore. Usually we just yell at people who keep spreading known misinformation.
