I still need to get Tuatha na Gael. :O I also recently got into Agalloch, and I do think there's a touch of folk in there somewhere. It's not overt, but I can see where people are coming from when they bring up folk influences.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

What's wrong with Opeth, incidentally? Just curious.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

But, yeah, death metal has little to do with it. In fact, I wouldn't expect fans of old-school DM to like Opeth, since they obviously have better taste than that.
Wankery? Are you sure you aren't thinking of Dream Theater? Anyway, I can see what you're saying somewhat, but I think that My Arms, Your Hearse is a lot more tight, songwriting wise, and that may have something to do with why it's my favorite Opeth album. And the long, meandering song format was much more prevalent on Morningrise, which I don't enjoy nearly as much as their later stuff. Regardless, I think Opeth have some pretty valid material, and are underrated by the hardcore metalheads. Which I'd like to consider myself, despite liking Opeth. That being said, I guess I'm really into prog, so that may have something to do with it. :|

I've listened to United in Regret once so far. It was good, but I'll need to give it a few more listens to decide what I really think of it.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I seem to be in the minority regarding United in Regret. A lot of people are saying great things about it, but so far I prefer their first two releases.

Rush is a fantastic band, but I don't think they're metal at all. Hard rock at the most, but they were prog for a few albums.

Ruun is a decent album, but it doesn't compare to Mardraum, Below the Lights, or Isa. I like their early material as well, but you can't really compare the two phases of their career fairly.. I will say that I find Vikingligr Veldi extremely overrated, though.. Too many black metal elites gush over that album and it's really not that great.

How ya doing, buddy?

The point is, she's no different from any other standard pop singer.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Jesus, that's harsh *g* Whether you like her voice or not, whether you like her music or not, but you cannot possibly even remotely consider comparing her to the homo sapiens parodies that clog the charts.

Zorro
I'm mostly indifferent to her voice, but you have to admit it's pretty standard. I'm referring to the Evanescence chick btw.. I haven't heard the new Nightwish vocalist and I don't really feel the need to.

The pop singer tag is thrown around because these bands have taken a genre that exists really solely to be confrontational and have kind of bastardized it into radio friendly jingles. It's pop music dressed up for halloween. If that's your thing, I'm fine with that. Just don't pretend it's something it isn't.
Excellently put. Regardless, I don't think anyone here is using pop as a dirty word. I'm sure we all enjoy a fair amount of pop music, but I don't really think metal works in the form of radio friendly jingles... Like knkwzrd said, it's cool if you're into that, but it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Man, I would love to see Enslaved and Arsis. Get A Diamond for Disease (by Arsis) too; it's a great EP.

I think both. I'm trying Epica just for shits, and the latest one from Astarte (who, according to the internet, now plays a melodic death metal with a hint of black metal).
Astarte's okay. I prefer ther older more black metal-oriented stuff, though.

Anyone like Ahab? I think they're pretty good. I don't have any experience with the genre, but I really like the vocals.
