That part of Saw I didn't find too bad. The parts that really made me squirm were the attachment traps that Amanda and the guy in the beginning of Saw 2 had. Saw 2 more because of the eye thing.
As for the scene in SH that you mentioned, I giggled like a schoolgirl during that whole part. That is to say, giddily. Really speaks for Gans' prowess as a director that he can generate sympathy and enthusiasm from the audience for a character whose actions are morally ambiguous at best.
