Xenogears does have its flaws, but it's a good game. The most important thing to keep in mind is that it will require a lot of your time. Save points (god damn that sacred cow) are few and far between, and there are very long stretches of gameplay at certain points. Add to that the narratives and the slower-than-average text speed (that the player cannot speed up), and it amounts to needing patience to play.
However, it's the kind of game that you can play over and over and always find something new each time.
If the game has a single strong point over all else, it's easily the story. It's a complex and initially confusing one, and you'll probably want to play more than once to make sure you get it, but it's a real feast for the brain.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
