I feel the same way about a lot of these songs people are mentioning.
Anything from Miss Saigon is utterly emotional. I saw the show when it was on tour about 2 years ago and I remember I was about to bawl my eyes out during Kim's Nightmare where she and Chris get seperated and he flies away in the helicopter. Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek - Have to agree with that one two. One of my friends was a fan of the OC and I'm not a huge fan of it, but she told me I had to listen to the song because it was good. So I did and it was very unconventional with the fact that it didn't have any accompaniment, just a layered voice with a little bit of an electronic feel. I like songs that feel like it tells a story and this song has this feeling to it. Sarah McLaughlin - Full of Grace - Now, anything with Sarah McLaughlin is automatically depressing, but this one just had a connection with me. I heard it during like the 3rd season of Buffy (fantastic show) and it fit so well and I just wanted to cry for Buffy because of a decision she had to make. On it's own, I still listen to it and feel like crying. Some people have mentioned the music from the films by Hayao Miyazaki and I agree 100%. In particular, I seemed to be moved to tears during portions of Howl's Moving Castle when Sophie was turned into the old woman. The music during that part where she is in the shop gives you the feeling of frailness and sorrow. There are many songs from Les Miserables that just fill me with tears. I Dreamed a Dream, Bring Him Home, On My Own, A Little Fall of Rain, Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. All of them are sad and convey the true feeling of the story. Finally, alot of the orchestrations in the movie Under the Tuscan Sun either make me very happy, sad, or hopeful. In particular there is a song at the end of the movie when the main character, Frances, has her house finished, she has her best friend living there with her baby, she had a wedding there (not her wedding), she cooked for people, and she got all her wishes. The song is very much in the background and soft until the very end of the movie when this old man who doesn't acknowledge Frances at all gives her a little smile and a simple tap of his hat and she goes back inside and this faucet that hadn't worked at all since the beginning of the movie is gushing with water and she just laughs and smiles and takes it in. That's when the music swells and it's very bittersweet and happy. Doesn't make me cry, but it just makes you smile. Man I wish I had the soundtrack to that movie. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
By the way, I found the name of the songs on the Under the Tuscan Sun Soundtrack and the song is called The Spigot...it sounds kind of sorrowful actually at the beginning, but fanciful and happy at the same time. Ends kind of abruptly because it picks up into a medley of all the songs into the credits. Anyway, you guys should check it out.
Thought I would mention George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue because that piece of work was played to me by my aunt at nights and has always stuck with me. There is especially one part of it and it's usually 10 minutes into the piece if it's the full thing where it slows down and it's mostly beautiful strings and it always makes me feel light and hopeful and happy. How ya doing, buddy? |
