Nothing is left to chance and good games are nothing but intellect vs. intellect. I have no desire to study the game, though. Learn the psychology behind various strategies and the 'best' kinds of opening moves, etc. I just like to play a game at a time and see what I can do.

I mostly think about the game in the way you do. Beyond the basics, I prefer not to think of it in terms of
Knight's Opening, or
Kasparov's Gambit, or
Willie Nelson's Flamjammery. I leave the technicalities to the experts, and I just play.
I'm pretty good at seeing the bigger picture, so I can usually see my opponent's strategy forming as he plays, but I've never really been able to think of my own gameplan more than a few steps ahead because of my poor memory.
